IN QUINTUM NOVEMBRIS
Anno Aetatis 17 Iam pius extrema veniens Iacobus ab arcto
Teucrigenas populos, lateque patentia regna
Albionum tenuit, iamque inviolabile foedus
Sceptra Caledoniis coniunxerat Anglica Scotis,

In solio, occultique doli securus et hostis:
Cum ferus ignifluo regnans Acheronte tyrannus,

Forte per immensum terrarum erraverat orbem, Dinumerans sceleris socios, vernasque fideles, Participes regni post funera moesta futuros. Hic tempestates medio ciet aere diras, Illic unanimes odium struit inter amicos, Armat et invictas in mutua viscera gentes, Regnaque olivifera vertit florentia pace, Et quoscunque videt purae virtutis amantes, Hos cupit adiicere imperio, fraudumque magister Tentat inaccessum sceleri corrumpere pectus, Insidiasque locat tacitas, cassesque latentes Tendit, ut incautos rapiat, ceu Caspia tigris Insequitur trepidam deserta per avia praedam Nocte sub illuni, et somno nictantibus astris. A speech for the liberty of unlicensed printing
to the parliament of England
This is true liberty, when free-born men,
Having to advise the public, may speak free,
Which he who can, and will, deserves high praise;
Who neither can, nor will, may hold his peace:
What can be juster in a state than this? Euripid. Hicetid. T Hey, who to states and governors of the Commonwealth direct their speech, High Court of Parliament, or, wanting such access in a private condition, write that which they foresee may advance the public good; I suppose them, as at the beginning of no mean endeavour, not a little altered and moved inwardly in their minds: some with doubt of what will be the success, others with fear of what will be the censure; some with hope, others with confidence of what they have to speak. And me perhaps each of these dispositions, as the subject was whereon I entered, may have at other times variously affected; and likely might in these foremost expressions now also disclose which of them swayed most, but that the very attempt of this address thus made, and the thought of whom it hath recourse to, hath got the power within me to a passion, far more welcome than incidental to a preface.
Nevertheless there being three principal things, without which all praising is but courtship and flattery: First, when that only is praised which is solidly worth praise: next, when greatest likelihoods are brought that such things are truly and really in those persons to whom they are ascribed: the other, when he who praises, by showing that such his actual persuasion is of whom he writes, can demonstrate that he flatters not; the former two of these I have heretofore endeavoured, rescuing the employment from him who went about to impair your merits with a trivial and malignant encomium; the latter as belonging chiefly to mine own acquittal, that whom I so extolled I did not flatter, hath been reserved opportunely to this occasion.

What is the "Brigade"?
We are a group of volunteers dedicated to serving our community through the provision of professional first aid services and disaster assistance. The St. John Ambulance Brigade was first formed in England in 1887 to give first aid coverage to Queen Victoria's Silver Jubilee parade. Our presence at local and community events continues this tradition, and furthers the work of St. John Ambulance in promoting safety and public first aid.
Some of the ways the Brigade in Canada have helped the community in the past 125 years are summarized in this short video (may require RealPlayer plugin). The Halton Hills Division There are more than 600 St. John Ambulance Brigade Divisions in Canada, each one serving a specific community or providing a specific service. The Halton Hills Division serves all of North Halton, including the towns of Georgetown, Acton, and Milton, by training volunteers to provide first aid services at fall fairs, sports events, parades, special events, and any other public gathering. Volunteer members may also be invited to assist at events in neighbouring divisions. In 2001, Halton Hills St. John Ambulance volunteers gave over 6000 hours of community service. Some places where you may have seen our volunteer members include:

John Milton (1608-1674)
Widely considered among the five greatest poets in the English language, John Milton was born and educated in London, the son of a musical composer. His early schooling took place at the St. Paul's School. From this prestigious beginning, Milton made his way to Cambridge, where he studied at Christ's College from which he took a BA in 1629 and an MA in 1632. While his studies were those of a future clergyman, Milton began early to read and write poetry in Latin, Italian, and English.
Upon his graduation, Milton returned to the home of his father where for several years he studied widely focusing on languages (Greek, Latin, and Italian) and theology, especially the early church fathers. During these years he also became more serious and capable in his poetic output. A dramatic masque Comus was performed in 1634 although not published (and then anonymously) in 1637.
Dating also to 1637, his great pastoral elegy, Lycidas , held by most critics to be among the greatest examples of that form, expresses his grief over the loss of a college friend, Edward King. In this work, the attentive reader can begin to discern the great Christian faith that lies at the heart of Milton the poet and which serves as the core of his most celebrated works. The end of Lycidas , especially, resounds with a powerful expression of faith in resurrection and redemption.

John Corigliano
John Corigliano first came to prominence after winning the chamber music prize at the 1964 Spoleto Festival for his "Sonata for Violin and Piano." "Symphony No. 1," Corigliano's impassioned personal response to the AIDS crisis, was written for the Chicago Symphony where he was composer-in-residence from 1987 to 1990. For this work he was awarded the 1991 Grawemeyer Award music's Nobel Prize as well as two Grammy Awards for "Best Contemporary Composition of 1991" and "Best Orchestral Performance of the Year." In 1991, Corigliano was elected to the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. He holds the position of Distinguished Professor of Music at Lehman College, City University of New York, and is on the faculty of the Julliard School.
Morton Gould
David Linton
Mr Linton studied filmmaking at SUNY Binghamton before pursuing a career in music. In 1983, he received his first dance score commissions from Karole Armitage and Steven Petronio, among others. He received a "Bessie" award in 1985 and 1986 for two of his scores, and his work was heard in an episode of PBS' "Alive From Off-Center." At the end of 1986, Neutral Records released Linton's debut solo LP, "Orchsography." In 1987, he was awarded an NYFA Fellowship for his work with visual artist Anthoney Silvestrini.
