Welcome to Henry Miller, American Author , a site dedicated to the writing and art of one of America's most underappreciated artists. After a long hiatus, I have finally had the chance to update this site. Many thanks for the encouragement, links and bibliography submissions that have been coming in over the past two years. As always, your suggestions are welcome. Scott Palmer ~ Casoria ~ November, 2000 It is difficult to remain neutral about Henry Miller (1891-1980). With respect to his life or his writing, one is sure to find ardent supporters and vociferous critics. What is strange then, is the relative lack of critical discussion surrounding the large body of his writing, particularly in the prevailing culture which fetes the Beats so heartily. However, Miller is far from obscure; his influence on twentieth century art, literature and popular culture is extensive. It is my hope that this page can serve to identify and acknowledge these effects.
Henry Miller and Lawrence Durrell in 1962 Most of us imagine that we are travelling in a straight line, whereas the truth is that we are moving in circles. We change direction almost without thinking. Headed for Mexico, we land in China. (And like as not, without the slightest loss of face.) The ambitious ones set out to storm the world, only to end up like so many dead leaves scattered by the wind. "Draconian Postscript" Site News (11/1/2000) Criticism page updated with new

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Henry (Valentine) Miller (1891-1980) American writer whose autobiographical novels had a liberating influence on mid-20th century literature. Because of the frank portrayals of sexuality, Miller's major novels have been banned in several countries. In the 1960s Miller became one of the most widely read US authors. In his autobiographical works Miller created a myth out of his own life, about a free-spirited, penniless American writer who has a number of affairs and spends his time between New York and Paris. "The bulk of my readers, I have often observed, fall into two distinct groups: in the one group those who claim to be repelled or disgusted by the liberal dosage of sex, and in the other those who are delighted to find that this element form such a large ingredient." (from The World of Sex Henry Valentine Miller was born in New York, N.Y, as the only child of German-American working-class parents. His father, Heinrich Miller, was a tailor. Louise (Nieting) Miller, his mother, never showed much affection toward her son, and she used to hit her children, also Miller's sister, who was mentally handicapped. At school Miller was a very good pupil. At the age of seventeen Miller visited a brothel for the first time, and contracted gonorrhea. He attended the college of the City of New York and left after two months. In STAND STILL LIKE THE HUMMINGBIRD (1962) the author explained that it was Spenser's

Henry Miller I believe that today more than ever a book should be sought after even if it has only one great page in it: we must search for fragments, splinters, toenails, anything that has ore in it, anything that is capable of resuscitating the body and soul. It may be that we are doomed, that there is no hope for us, any of us, but if that is so then let us set up a last agonizing, bloodcurdling howl, a screech of defiance, a war whoop! Away with lamentation! Away with elegies and dirges! Away with biographies and histories, and libraries and museums! Let the dead eat the dead. Let us living ones dance about the rim of the crater, a last expiring dance. But a dance! Henry Miller, Tropic of Cancer, 1934
Henry Miller was born December 26, 1891 in New York, New York. During his first year of life, Miller's family moved to Brooklyn, where the whole of his childhood was spent. In 1909, Miller graduated from high school and entered City College of New York where he stayed for only two months. Not being able to bear the academic routine, Miller went to work at a variety of jobs. Everything from a cab driver to librarian. In 1917, Miller met and married the first of five wives, Beatrice Sylvas Wickens, with whom he has one child. Miller took a job with Western Union telegraph service in 1920 where his first endeavor into writing took place. Miller's boss came to him one day with the idea that someone should write a book about messengers. He proposed something along the lines of "Horatio Alger," what Miller came up with was "Clipped Wings." This is a story of twelve messengers along the lines of Dostoevsky, rather than Horatio Alger. Miller wrote about "gentle souls, insulted and injured, who run amok or suffer violence; the stories are full of bitterness and horror, ending in murder or suicide, usually both" (Wickes 1974:170-192). Miller realized that the work was a failure because he knew nothing of writing, but this endeavor spawned the urge to learn about writing.

HENRY MILLER Writer Henry Miller grew up in New York, but spent many years in Europe, where his autobiographical and sexually explicit novels Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn were published in the 1930s. They were banned in the U.K. and the U.S. While in Paris he began a famous affair with writer Anais Nin , who documented their exploits in her diaries. Between the 1940s and 1960s Miller settled in Big Sur, California, exhibited water colors and wrote, most notably publishing the trilogy known as The Rosy Crucifixion (the novels Sexus, Plexus and Nexus ). His early novels were finally published in the U.K. and the U.S. in the 1960s, and Miller became a pop culture icon.

I didn't have to think up so much as a comma or a semicolon; it was all given, straight from the celestial recording room. Weary, I would beg for a break, an intermission, to go to the toilet or take a breath of fresh air on the balcony. Nothing doing! All growth is a leap in the dark, a spontaneous unpremeditated act without benefit of experience. The world itself is pregnant with failure, is the perfect manifestation of imperfection, of the consciousness of failure. The worst sin that can be committed against the artist is to take him at his word, to see in his work a fulfillment instead of an horizon.

Miller, Henry Miller, Henry, , American author, b. New York City. Miller sought to reestablish the freedom to live without the conventional restraints of civilization. His books are potpourris of sexual description, quasi-philosophical speculation, reflection on literature and society, surrealistic imaginings, and autobiographical incident. After living in Paris in the 1930s, he returned to the United States and settled in Big Sur, Calif. Miller's first two works, Tropic of Cancer (Paris, 1934) and Tropic of Capricorn (Paris, 1939), were denied publication in the U.S. until the early 1960s because of alleged obscenity. an exclusive interview on henry miller with his close friend and lawyer, the late Elmer Gertz, noted Chicago First Amendment attorney.
http://www.americanlegends.com/Interviews/miller.htm
Henry Miller Remembered
Elmer Gertz and Henry Miller (For many years, the late Henry Miller was considered the "Bad Boy" of American literature. His novel, The Tropic of Cancer, first published in France, dealt with the ribald exploits of expatriate writers in Paris during the 1930s. For over twenty years, the book was banned in the USA. Elmer Gertz successfully defended the book's publication in Illinois. After the ban was lifted, Gertz and Miller became friendsa friendship the lawyer recalls in this exclusive interview with American Legends.) AL: Why was Miller considered a "dirty" writer? EG: Because he wrote Tropic of Cancer and several other books which used the so-called "four letter" words and were very explicit sexually. AL: Some critics, like Gore Vidal, have claimed that Miller was self-indulgent. EG: Henry Miller wrote exactly as he lived and felt. He tried to avoid all literary devices such as verbal inhibitions. AL: Miller has been criticized by some feminists.
