A Quoi Bon Dire
Seventeen years ago you said
Something that sounded like Good-bye:
And everybody thinks you are dead
But I. So I as I grow stiff and cold
To this and that say Good-bye too;
And everybody sees that I am old
But you. And one fine morning in a sunny lane Some boy and girl will meet and kiss and swear That nobody can love their way again While over there You will have smiled, and I shall have tossed your hair
Sea Love
Tide be runnin. the great world over: . Twas only last June month I mind that we Was thinkin. the toss and the call in the breast of the lover So everlastin. as the sea. Here's the same little fishies that splutter and swim, Wi. the moon. s old glim on the grey, wet sand: An. him no more to me nor me to him Then the wind goin over my hand.
I So Liked Spring
I so liked Spring last year Because you were here;- The thrushes too- Because it was these you so liked to hear- I so liked you.

Charlotte Mew
The Farmer's Bride
Three Summers since I chose a maid,
Too young maybe - but more's to do
At harvest-time than bide and woo.
When us was wed she turned afraid
Of love and me and all things human;
Like the shut of a winter's day.
Her smile went out, and 'twasn't a woman
More like a little, frightened fay.
One night, in the Fall, she runned away. "Out 'mong the sheep, her be," they said,
'Should properly have been abed;
But sure enough she wasn't there Lying awake with her wide brown stare. So over seven-acre field and up-along across the down We chased her, flying like a hare Before our lanterns. To Church-Town All in a shiver and a scare We caught her, fetched her home at last And turned the key upon her, fast. She does the work about the house As well as most, but like a mouse: Happy enough to chat and play With birds and rabbits and such as they, So long as men-folk stay away. "Not near, not near!" her eyes beseech When one of us comes within reach. The women say that beasts in stall Look round like children at her call.

Christina Rosetti
While Christina Rossetti was not a lesbian (as far as I know) a few scholars find passages of her popular Goblin Market to be suggestion of lesbianism. Here is an excerpt: From Goblin Market , lines 183-197 "Laura and Lizzie Asleep"
Golden head by golden head,
Like two pigeons in one nest
Folded in each other's wings,
They lay down their curtained bed:
Like two blossoms on one stem
Like two flakes of new-fall'n snow,
Like two wands of ivory
Tipped with gold for awful kings.
Moon and stars gazed in at them,
Wind sang to them lullaby, Lumbering owls forbore to fly, Not a bat flapped to and fro Round their nest: Cheek to cheek and breast to breast Locked together in one nest.

THE CHANGELING by: Charlotte Mew
    OLL no bell for me, dear Father, dear Mother,
    Waste no sighs;
    There are my sisters, there is my little brother
    Who plays in the place called Paradise,
    Your children all, your children for ever;
    But I, so wild,
    Your disgrace, with the queer brown face, was never,
    Never, I know, but half your child!
    In the garden at play, all day, last summer,
    Far and away I heard
    The sweet "tweet-tweet" of a strange new-comer,
    The dearest, clearest call of a bird.
    It lived down there in the deep green hollow,
    My own old home, and the fairies say
    The word of a bird is a thing to follow,
    So I was away a night and a day.
    One evening, too, by the nursery fire,
    We snuggled close and sat round so still,
    When suddenly as the wind blew higher,
    Something scratched on the window-sill.
    A pinched brown face peered inI shivered;
    No one listened or seemed to see;
    The arms of it waved and the wings of it quivered
    WhooI knew it had come for me!
    Some are as bad as bad can be!
    All night long they danced in the rain,
    Round and round in a dripping chain

Useful links original content The Cenotaph (September 1919) by Charlotte Mew Not yet will those measureless fields be green again Where only yesterday the wild sweet blood of wonderful youth was shed; There is a grave whose earth must hold too long, too deep a stain, Though for ever over it we may speak as proudly as we may tread. But here, where the watchers by lonely hearths from the thrust of an inward sword have more slowly bled, We shall build the Cenotaph: Victory, winged, with Peace, winged too, at the column’s head. And over the stairway, at the foot—oh! here, leave desolate, passionate hands to spread Violets, roses, and laurel, with the small, sweet, tinkling country things

Charlotte Mew I first heard the poem when it was read by a visiting lecturer at our high school about 1947. It kept ringing in my head, but I could never find it or quote it completely. All I could recall was that it was written by a woman poet with a name that began with "M". For years I tried all of the usual suspects, but never found it. Then I tried www.Dogpile.com.... and found http://www.execpc.com/~jon/sealove.html but without an author.
