So Better to Have Loved Gunner Cade and Outpost Mars , her two collaborations with C.M. Kornbluth as by Cyril Judd, have miscegenated badly). So it's not a memoir, and it's not very correct. But it is indispensable, all the same.

Hosted by Robert Davi NBC Feb. 17, 8-10 p.m. Review by Patrick Lee re spacecraft from another world secretly visiting the Earth? Are thousands of people being kidnapped by an alien species and subjected to horrifying experiments? Outrageous claims? Or could they possibly be true? These are the questions posed by host Robert Davi at the outset of an ambitious TV special purporting to offer the first hard evidence of the truth behind reports of UFO phenomena. It begins with a look at photographs and video of UFOshome video from Mexico, controversial footage from the space shuttle and the two 1950 McMinville, Ore., photographs that have so far withstood critical scrutiny. The show then offers a history lesson on the modern beginning of the UFO phenomenon: in 1947 the first widespread reports of sightings of "flying disks" and a fanciful recreation of the now-famous Roswell incident. It balances this mythology with details from the U.S. Air Force's own report discrediting the Roswell UFO sightings and leaves the issue up in the air.

For Immediate Release: Better to Have Loved: The Life of Judith Merril by Judith Merril and Emily Pohl-Weary Judith Merril’s contribution to science fiction was summed up by J. G. Ballard (author of Crash and Empire of the Sun) in 1992: "Science fiction, I suspect, is now dead, and probably died about the time that Judy closed her anthology and left to found her memorial library to the genre in Toronto. I remember my last sight of her, surrounded by her friends and all the books she loved, shouting me down whenever I tried to argue with her, the strongest woman in a genre
for the most part created by timid and weak men."
What was it like for a gender-bender who made it in a man's world fifty years ago? Known as "the little mother of science fiction," Judith Merril burst onto the New York literary scene in 1948 with a disturbing story about nuclear radiation. Learn how Merril and other early science fiction writers ike Frederik Pohl and Isaac Asimov lived, argued, dated, mimeoed their manifestos, learned step by step how to write stories, and (in some cases) how to get paid for them. EMILY POHL-WEARY Emily lives in Toronto. She is obsessed with mysteries like whether Nancy Drew's sidekicks Bess and George were more-than-close cousins, how V.I. Warshawski got such knockout crime-fighting skills, why the feud between Betty and Veronica has been prolonged for decades, and how teenaged armed robbers in New York City get guns. In between daydreams, she writes fiction, poetry, cultural reviews, news and opinion articles. She is co-editor of Kiss Machine and books and new fiction editor of Broken Pencil , the guide to zines and alternative culture in Canada. Novel in progress: Sugar's Empty
Emily is currently working on a novel about a slacker girl named Sugar Jones (no relation to the Pop Stars band), who loves the actor Parker Posey, eats too much chocolate and thinks she's a ghost ever since her boyfriend died. Emily has completed a significant portion of the novel, and you can read the first chapter here. That chapter is appearing in an upcoming anthology of fiction by young women writers called

    History of
(formerly known as Spaced Out Library )
The history of the Merril Collection goes back to the 10th of August, 1970 when an agreement was signed between Judith Merril, a prominent science fiction author/editor, and the Board of the Toronto Public Library. In this agreement Judith Merril donated to the Toronto Public Library her collection of science fiction, fantasy, and associated non-fiction which contained around 5,000 items. This collection was named The Spaced Out Library. The Spaced Out Library was established as a reference collection of "contemporary speculative literature, including science fiction, certain aspects of fantasy fiction, satire, surrealist, and other speculative, future oriented, and conceptually experimental work, whether in fiction, poetry, drama, essay, or other forms as well as critical and bibliographic materials relating to science fiction and the associated areas of contemporary speculative writing" serving both scholars and the general public. In 1990 the collection was officially renamed The Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation and Fantasy.

Scripted and directed by Ronald Weihs, artistic director of Artword Theatre, the play runs from November 11 to November 30, 1997 at Artword Theatre, 81 Portland Street. Written in 1952, "Whoever You Are" was Judith Merril's answer to the "Fortress America" paranoia at the beginning of the cold war, and her protest against the emotional and sexual repression that fueled it. Although the lines today are less sharply drawn, fear of the alien is as prevalent today as it was then. The play's premise is simple. The human race has built a web around the Solar System that traps alien life forms. A SolSys scout ship returns with aliens aboard and is caught in the web. When a young recruit boards the ship and investigates, it becomes evident that the aliens have what may be an irresistible weapon: they love everybody.

    Just differently intelligent.
Not actually stupid. Main April 06, 2002 Some of you may not Some of you may not know Judith Merril. I barely did. One Wednesday I talked to her on the phone, and we made arrangements to meet that Saturday, so that I could give her a CD some curriculum I'd written on her short story "That Only A Mother". The CD included her story as well, perhaps it's last publication during her life. She passed away before we could meet. Judy, on reviewing the material I'd written on her work, ursula k. le guin and william gibson gave me what will probably be the best compliment I'll ever get as an educator. Her words, as I remember them were "This is the first teaching guide I've on science fiction that doesn't suck." She went on to say, about le guin, "That woman's had her consciousness raised one level too high." It is amazing to actually have two lines worth remembering from someone you never met, and only talked to on the phone twice. Check out what some other folks had to say about her... BTW, Barry Wellman is the electronic executor of her estate. Hello friends and lit-types, Hi there!
