William Wordsworth
William Wordsworth was born on April 7, 1770, in the town of Cockermouth in the Lake District of Cumberland, England. His parents were John Wordsworth, an attorney, and Ann Wordsworth. William Wordsworth soon learned the hardships of life when his mother died in 1778 followed by his father in 1783. After Mrs. Wordsworth passed away, his father sent William and his siblings to live with different relatives all over England. His schooling included attending Hawkshead, Cambridge, and St. John's College. Following this education, he journeyed on a summer-long backpacking adventure of Switzerland, France, and Italy. While in France, he met Annette Vallon and fell passionately in love with her. They became lovers, and she bore William a daughter, Ann Caroline. Though no one source can list the reasons why they never married, many say it was due to religious intolerance (Annette was a conservative Catholic and William a liberal Protestant) and mutual poverty. Selected Writings of William Sharp, Vol. IV , Literary Geography THE COUNTRY OF GEORGE MEREDITH The day was a van-bird of summer; the robin still piped, but the blue,
A warm and dreamy palace with voices of larks ringing through,
Looked down as if wistfully eyeing the blossoms that fell from its lap;
A day to sweeten the juices, a day to quicken the sap!
All round the shadowy orchard sloped meadows in gold, and the dear
Shy violets breathed their hearts outthe maiden breath of the year how
he would describe that cherry-tree . . . well, you've read Richard Feverel and Love in a Valley, and that should tell you everything!" But before we come to Meredith's own particular countrythe home-country so intimately described in much of his most distinctive poetry and prose, and endeared to all who love both by his long residence in its midst-let us turn first to the wider aspects implied in the title of this article of our "Literary Geography" series. Lord Ormont and his Aminta
