"Doc" Dougherty of the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society proposed that an annual West Coast convention be started for West Coast fans who couldn't afford to travel east each year. The first Westercon was held in September, 1948. It was a one-day event with an attendance of 77. It wasn't until 1951 that the Westercon became a weekend-long event, settled into the July 4th holiday and began traveling to different cities. Some observations from our editorial colleague Beth Meacham When, 17 years ago, I read the manuscript of Kim Stanley Robinson's first novel, The Wild Shore , I loved the book but I had a big problem with the basic premisethat the United States had been devastated, forced into economic and technological primitivity by a sudden, overwhelming, tactical nuclear attack, and was now interdicted by the rest of the world. It seemed to me to be an unbelievable premise, the kind of thing where you just had to hold your breath and jump in for the sake of the story and the writing. How could we possibly get from here (20 years ago) to there? This weekend I read a story in the Los Angeles Times , and was overwhelmed with the sudden knowledge that I now knew the answer to my question so long ago. From that article: In a policy statement issued only last month, the White House said the United States "will continue to make clear that it reserves the right to respond with overwhelming forceincluding through resort to all of our optionsto the use of weapons of mass destruction against the United States." One year ago, the administration completed a classified Nuclear Posture Review that said nuclear weapons should be considered against targets able to withstand conventional attack; in retaliation for an attack with nuclear, chemical or biological weapons; or "in the event of surprising military developments." And it identified seven countriesChina, Russia, Iraq, North Korea, Iran, Libya and Syriaas possible targets.

Your interviewer clutching the first page of the original handwritten manuscript of THE SKIES DISCROWNED. Apologies for the cheesy grin! Click the icon below to listen to an excerpt of this interview. (753KB) JB: Let's go onto to the books, to your work. THE SKIES DISCROWNED and EPITAPH IN RUST, the Laser books. How did they come about? What made you start? TP: Well, K W Jeter, through I think knowing Barry Malzberg, had found out about this publishing company Laser Books which was then very new and what it was is Harlequin Romances the Toronto, Canada company had decided to branch off into science fiction publishing and it was a failure. They, after a couple of years, stopped it, but briefly as Jeter explained to me when he called me up, he said "This is a new company. They're very hungry. They pay very little and they have rigorous length requirements and pretty damn strict restrictions on, like, sex scenes and dirty talk and stuff like that. So, there's no competition! They will give you a contract on the basis of three chapters and an outline. I just signed up for my second one. Why don't you do this?" And I thought, Golly! Yes, I sure will! "An outline though you say Jeter?" ...because I had been used to pursuing it the way Blaylock and I had been at Cal State Fullerton. He said, "Yeah. You need to know what's gonna happen before you start!" I thought, well that's exotic! But if they actually want to see it, I could write one.
