The World Dream Bank: Topics
PATRICIA MCKILLIP
skip down to the dreams!
I made very few lists of dreams provoked by particular writers, but I made an exception for Patricia McKillip, whose powerful, literate, surreal, subtle, psychological fantasies have consistently stimulated weird and vivid dreams for memore than, say, Castaneda, and probably more than Jung. It could be because she invented an artform, and I'm out to do the same. In her Riddle trilogy (The Riddlemaster of Hed, Heir of Sea and Fire, Harpist in the Wind) educated people use riddles as a Socratic teaching tool, as scripture . Their tripartite structure, of riddle (often a bare, strange question),
answer (often a long parable), and, most importantly,
stricture (often a dreamlike, metaphorical moraland ALWAYS an imperative, a call or guide to action)... inspired mewhy shouldn't dreams, too, have their own customary form, one that maximizes their impact and facilitates their power to teach? They too are tripartite waking (events or thoughts provoking a question, provoking a dream)

On Theme, Outlining, Research, and Revision
    Patricia A. McKillip
    On Critiques: Student:
Between the time you finish a book before you send it off to the editor, do you have anybody read it? PM: I used to. But now my agent reads it and he's worked as an editor himself, and he's got really, really, good suggestions so I tend to trust what he says about something. Usually not. I don't have friends who I bring chapters to and have them sit around and analyze it. Partly because I never know quite what I'm doing while I'm writing anyway and partly because sometimes the act of somebody else looking at what you've written just makes it vanish somehow. You don't want to go to that place anymore, you want to go someplace else that's secret. That's probably something left over from my childhood. You know, I lose concentration on it when someone else looks at it. Student: If [people in a critique group] say something drastic needs to be done, how seriously do you take it?

    Song for the Basilisk
    Patricia McKillip
    Ace, 314 pages
Order this book For centuries the walled city of Berylon was ruled by the House of Tourmalyne, until rival Pellior House, led by the man known as the Basilisk, rose up and took the city for itself. A single Tourmalyne heir survives the massacre of his family and the burning of his home by hiding in a fireplace. So that the strangely gifted Basilisk will not find him, he turns his thoughts to ash. Rescued by a few scattered Tourmalyne survivors, he is renamed Caladrius, after the bird that sings at the deathbed of a king, and sent to Luly, a school for bards so far away it is nearly at the end of the world.
Thirty-seven years pass. Caladrius becomes a master of music, and begets a son, Hollis. He has willed himself to forget his identity, his heritage, the carnage that claimed his family. He wants nothing more than to stay on Luly forever, though he can never become a bard, for to play the harp, the bard's instrument, brings him too close to the threshold of memory. But when a descendant of one of the surviving Tourmalynes comes to Luly, seeking the power it is rumored the bards possess, the wall of Caladrius's forgetfulness is breached. Dreaming of fire, he remembers who he is, and vows vengeance.
Caladrius travels to Berylonfollowed, without his knowledge, by Hollisand takes a post as music librarian in the Basilisk's household. He acquires a fire-bone pipe, an instrument that plays what lies deepest in the player's heart, and can make music into death. He intends to play a killing song at the Basilisk's birthday celebration. But there are others who have plans for the celebrationHollis, who also has found a fire-bone pipe, and a group of revolutionaries intent on restoring Tourmalyne House to power. Within the frame of the performance of the opera commissioned for the occasion, whose plot accidentally embodies the truth of Caladrius's story, all these elements collide, with catastrophic results.

    The Tower at Stony Wood
    by Patricia McKillip
Like most of McKillip's recent novels, her latest is highly rarefied, but unpredictable, high fantasy. She assembles a number of fairy-tale traditions: the lady in a tower, the lone knight on quest, the mysterious old woman who knows way more than she should, the monster who preys upon travelers, and so on and runs them counter to the reader's expectations. The Tower at Stony Wood is beautifully written, but very disorienting, and not entirely successful. The story opens as the king of Yves receives his beautiful young bride from the neighboring land of Skye, a fey country known for dragons and magic. Nobody in Yves believes in that sort of thing anymore, so it comes as a considerable shock to knight Cyan Dag when he turns out to be the only member of the court who can see that the lovely new queen is actually a hideous sea monster. The impostor tells Cyan that the true queen is trapped in a tower in Skye, guarded by a dragon, and will die instantly if she looks upon the world outside. (Evil gloating makes for great exposition.) Cyan, who is steadfast, brave, and almost completely lacking in personality, can't even begin to convince the king or the other knights of this; so he rides off to Skye to rescue the true queen, somewhat hampered by having no idea of how to find the tower or how to free her. Fortunately for Cyan, one can't seem to turn around in Skye without knocking into a mysterious stone tower. Finding the right tower, however, proves to be a problem.

    - November 16, 2002 Who is the Star-Bearer and what will he loose that is bound? Morgon of Hed was born to the land-rule, to quiet farming and selling grain to the spring traders. But when Morgon wins a riddle-game with an ancient specter, he finds that destiny waits for him far from the peace of Hed. Morgon's brow is marked by three stars, and only he can pluck the strings of a dead wizard's harp inset with three red stars. This is a world where an unanswered riddle can mean death, and Morgon leaves behind him a trail of riddles as wide as the river Ose. Raederle of An, the second-most beautiful woman in the three portions of An, is promised to whomever wins the crown from the ghost of Peven. But when Morgon never comes to claim her, and the lands begin to churn with chaos, Raederle ventures forth to find Morgon and to protect him from the sea-born shape-changers that hunt him solely for the name he carries. Deth, the High One's harpist, has for centuries traveled between kingdoms, serving the High One and the land-rulers alike. For longer than anyone can remember, he has been counselor and confidant, teacher and musician, and sometimes lover, to those that rule in the High One's name. But as the world turns under Morgon's path, Deth's fortune fails, and he to whom all places were once open is barred from each kingdom in its turn. At last he must hide in the wilderness far from those who would kill him and begs for the money to buy a harp that he plucks clumsily with maimed hands.

OMBRIA IN SHADOW by Patricia A. McKillip
Ace Books, January 2002 Ombria is the greatest city in the world, but it has fallen on hard times. The Prince of the city lies dying, his son a young child, his mistress despised by the court, and the evil pirate witch Domina Pearl stands ready to become regentand to thust Ombria into chaos. The nobles try to unite around Ducon Greve, the Prince's nephew, but Ducon's hands are tied by Domina Pearl's threat to the young prince. Yet Ombria is more than a single city. It's history lies heavy on it, ghosts prowl the streets, and any alley or ruined shop might open the way into another citya city in shadows. Deep within the city's underworld, a witch child, Mag, follows her witch-mistress's commands, but tries to understand, to think about what she is doing. Although her mistress supports Domina Pearl, Mag knows that she must be opposed. Author Patricia A. McKillip has created a wonderful city of magic. Her descriptions of Ombria ring with truth. Mag, Ducon, and Domina Pearl stand out as complex and motivated characters and their decisions, and the conflict among them, drives the story forward. Even throw-away characters such as the young prince's tutor are fascinating in their own right. OMBRIA IN SHADOW is a superior fantasy novel. On a small canvas, McKillip shows how wonderful fantasy can be.
