MacDonald created his famous series character Travis McGee in his forty-fourth novel THE DEEP BLUE GOOD-BY in 1964, and went on to write twenty-one books about the most "colorful" of all unlicensed private detectives - each novel in the McGee series contains a color in the title. The awarded mystery writer and critic H.R.F. Keating selected MacDonald's THE GREEN RIPPER (1979) in 1987 for his list of the one hundred best crime novels. "The twenty-odd McGee books... are, in fact, perhaps our best example of the crime story as a novel of feelings. In this it is not unfair to compare MacDonald to Charles Dickens, although Dickens had of course an infinitely wider range. But it is Dickens the novelist of feelings, of sentiment, and of sentimentality, that MacDonald brings to mind." (Keating in John D. MacDonald was born in Sharon, Pennsylvania. He received his B.S. degree from Syracuse University in 1938, and earned a Harvad M.B.A. in 1939. In 1937 he married Dorothy Mary Prentiss; they had one son. These include expressing specific, fibronectin binding integrins in CHO cell lines to determine if this confers the ability to assemble a matrix, and constructing a novel neo integrin comprised of the signal sequence and transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains of a mammalian ß1 integrin and a novel bacterial fibronectin binding protein. 2) Use of a molecular mimicry approach to isolate and characterize the cell surface receptor responsible for binding the 29 kDa domain. We have raised antibodies to a fibronectin binding protein from S. aureus that binds to the 29 kDa domain and prevents its binding to eukaryotic cells. These antibodies are being screened for cross reaction with eukaryotic cell surface antigens to isolate the mammalian receptor for 29 kDa binding. 3) Constructing novel molecules that will create dominant negative mutants unable to construct a fibronectin matrix or utilize integrins to bind fibronectin in vivo. Three transgenic approaches are being pursued, including expression of invasin, a bacterial protein that binds to ß1 integrins and inhibits their function, a §1 integrin subunit that contains a loss of function point mutation, and expression of the S. aureus fibronectin binding protein as an inhibitor of fibronectin matrix assembly.

McDonald III, MD, PhD John McDonald is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurological Surgery, and Director of the Spinal Cord Injury Program at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, the Rehabilitation Institute of St. Louis and Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Dr. McDonald received his B.S. in Liberal Arts and Science (in Neurosciences) at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. He achieved his combined MD and PhD (Neurosciences) in the Medical Scientist Training Program from the University of Michigan in 1992. After completing research fellowship training at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and residency training at Washington University School of Medicine, he joined the faculty at Washington University School of Medicine as Instructor of Neurology in 1996. Dr. McDonald received a dual appointment as Assistant Professor of Neurology and director of Spinal Cord Injury Unit at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in 1998.
