41. John McCutcheon Interview

John McCutcheon Phone Interview I'm going to say "Hi John." Hi. I think we described you as a folk singer and you were talking about how many other things that you've done and the envelope in which you are included as a folk singer. Want to talk about what you're doing and what you've done? That's the childrens... I forge a line between adult music and childrens music that is something that people haven't really done before, so it's been fun. Being involved in the business for about 30 years and seen all the changes that's gone through, and still feeling that I'm in the middle of my creative stride. I have...I think the first ones that I have are like Wry Straw. You're one of dozens of people. Dozens? That have that album. I don't even think I have that album anymore. Wow, I guess it's a collectors item. And I have a couple more... How Can I Keep From Singing Oh yeh, that's my first album. 1974. It's beautiful. Thanks! Those albums were on a small label out of eastern Kentucky that miraculously is still going. It was started by a bunch od us who were interested in keeping music that was being created in the Appalachian area still controlled by people in the area rather than what they have typcially done, say, in Nashville, is take the music off and change it to make it more palatable to a quote mainstream audience. We were primarily interested in marketing directly in the region. And we're lucky enough to have people in other parts of the country really interested in the fact that this was real stuff going on. So you have some of the early relics...albums that I don't even own anymore.

An Interview With John McCutcheon by Daniel Elton Harmon John McCutcheon's home page on the World Wide Web has a markedly simple address: www.folkmusic.com. It's appropriate. To countless fans here and abroad, "John McCutcheon" and "folk music" are synonymous. The 43-year-old native Wisconsin, who lives today in Charlottesville, VA, granted The Hornpipe this e-mail interview while touring in late August 1996. DH : My first memory of John McCutcheon is of a brown-mopped, T-shirted guy tuning and noodling around on his hammer dulcimer in a removed section of woods at Fiddlers Grove, NC, circa 1973 or '74. It was the first time I'd ever seen or heard a hammer dulcimer; I'm sure it was the first time for a lot of others at that festival. How much earlier than that had you begun playing the instrument? JOHN : I'd actually begun playing the dulcimer just the previous summer. An old girlfriend of mine, Jude Odell, had taken an instrument building class at the Augusta Heritage Arts Workshop up in Elkins, WV. I went up to visit and she had built this thing and gave it to me. This was in August of, say, 1973. By that time I played all the other string instruments I now play (fiddle, banjo, guitar, autoharp, mountain dulcimer) so I had a lot of music running around in my head. The dulcimer, with its logical setup and percussive possibilities, was immediately understandable and interesting to me. I began playing the day I got it and, in fact, performed for the first time the following night at a festival in Asheville, NC. Some gall, huh?

John McCutcheon (Rounder Records Corp., One Camp St., Cambridge, MA 02140-1194; (800) 443-4727)
From ballads to blues to rock, this CD, penned mostly in collaboration with Si Kahn, again features McCutcheon in a band context accompanied by percussion, electric guitars, horns and other instruments as well as acoustic guitar. It almost seems to have been designed with airplay in mind - but don't worry; the construction is high-quality, top to bottom. It's a satisfying continuation of the artist's recent musical explorations. "Leftovers" is a blues-rock worker's commentary - but not a lament, for although the lyrics spell hopeless, helpless routine (working two jobs, making ends meet with coupons and "anything you can to make do"), there's redemption in small pleasures. The gentle ballad "Each Season It's the Same" is a modern-day Alaska fisherman's commentary, penned by McCutcheon in 1987. "Here on the Islands," written during the same period, is a deeper exploration of the fisherman's plight - ironically presented with delicate, solo piano accompaniment. Both these ballads are pearls reminiscent of Stan Rogers' maritime classics. "The Way It's Supposed to Be" is a modern fisherwoman's song in a totally different vein; it's Caribbean in both content and style, logical and breezy. "Walk On" is a pop-flavored, unhappy reflection. "The Memory of Old Jack," prompted by a novel, and this reviewer's favorite cut on the CD, is sort of a plain man's impressionistic diary of the first half of the 20th Century.

Cambridge, Massachusetts 02140 Moshe Landsman moshelea@netvision.net.il "I am here tonight to pass the music on." This line from their second track is the closest I can get to summarizing the joy of this album of songs from highly diverse roots. All of the songs that Tom and John bring us in this presentation have an unmistakable folk/acoustic tradition running through their veins, and give the listener a feeling of being a real link on the golden chain. John McCutcheon and Tom Chapin are both accomplished singer/songwriters in their own right, and began performing together on and off in 1988. Even though this their only album together, recorded live in December 1996, it gives a feeling that they work together all the time. They are joined by Bobby Read and Michael Mark who help out with woodwinds and keyboard (Bobby) and bass and concertina (Michael). The sidemen are a great addition, but John and Tom cover a wide variety of acoustic instruments with seemingly equal ability. The album opens with a rousing rendition of Pete Seeger's Well May the World Go . John's gusty banjo picking gives a real Pete Seeger feeling that makes me feel the potential of the song without the chorus that encroaches on Pete's recording of the song in his new album. The words ("Well may the world go when I'm far away") take on a sobering meaning if we remember that Pete is pushing 80. It takes a lot of guts to rearrange someone else's material, and with Woody Guthrie's

I don´t think John McCutcheon needs an introduction. For a quarter of a century he has recorded music, toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe, the USSR and Australia, and has appeared with a bunch of other music legends. "John is one of our greatest songwriters, musicians and song leaders. And not just incidentally, he is dedicated to organizing and moving this world in a better direction." This quote from Pete Seeger pretty much sums up John´s talents and commitments, which are showcased on Storied Ground, his twenty-fourth release. The heroes in his songs are both people of today and historical figures, who through personal courage, helped to improve the lives of working class people and those facing discrimination. His ability to tell a personal story and build a bridge to make it relevant to the listener makes each song a moving experience. Some songs are so touching that they can bring tears to your eyes, while others may make you want to raise your fist and shout "yes, damned right!"
