4. John McCutcheon, Dean Of American Cartoonists
It's a great pity that men like john mccutcheon can't go on livingand working forever, for the world never has had enough of them. .
http://www.purdue.edu/PER/W99Perspective.McC.html
John McCutcheon recalled his days at Purdue when he created the cartoon of the West Lafayette Campus (below). At left, McCutcheon (middle row, second from left) and George Ade (back row, far left) were among the group who gathered for a photograph on campus in 1890. Behind them is the Dormitory, later known as Purdue Hall, and the Military Hall/Gymnasium behind that. At right is the west side of University Hall.
John McCutcheon encounters
lifetime of adventure after Purdue years
The June 11, 1949, Chicago Tribune, in an editorial lamenting the death of John Tinney McCutcheon, said: "It's a great pity that men like John McCutcheon can't go on living and working forever, for the world never has had enough of them." Purdue President James Smart may have had different thoughts during McCutcheon's years at Purdue. McCutcheon, an 1889 Purdue graduate, was considered something of a "problem" student by Smart. He and George Ade (Purdue, 1887) were at different times reprimanded for visiting the Ladies Literary Society without permission, and McCutcheon was kicked off the staff of The Purdue, the pre-Exponent student newspaper, for publishing an unapproved issue. McCutcheon's work and play in his post-Purdue years, though, brought him high praise across the Midwest and the country - and back home in Tippecanoe County.

http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~mcut/johnny_t.htm
McCutcheon Residence Hall is named after John Tinney McCutcheon, Purdue graduate and famous newspaper cartoonist and correspondent.
John was born just outside Lafayette, Indiana, in May 1870, the second of five children born to John T. McCutcheon Sr. and Suzzanna Caldwell.
John's grandfather, Barr McCutcheon emigrated to the United States from Scotland; from his ancestry comes the name of our student organization, the "Royal Highlanders."
John was a member of the Class of 1889 here at Purdue University, which was composed of twenty-eight (28) graduates. He was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity, one of two on campus a the time, and referred to those not living in fraternities (there were no sororities) as barbarians. While a student he was a cartoonist on the first "Debris" staff and gave the publication its name. The word is French for, as he put it, "mess of stuff."
Upon graduating, John traveled to Chicago, Illinois where he got a job as a cartoonist with the Chicago Morning News. His early days in the city were summed up when he wrote that his "greatest excitement was lunching off ten cents worth of Tokay grapes, which were new and unusual then and considered very grand." His talent developed rapidly and by 1898 he was sent abroad to travel, draw cartoons, and report on his journey. This became a habit for John, and much of the remainder of his live was spent traveling for the paper or taking extended vacations. His excursions covered most of the world.
In 1903 John joined the staff of the Chicago Tribune, with which he stayed until his retirement. The passing of time brought him ever-increasing popularity, and for forty (40) years he was America's foremost cartoonist. His works followed war politics and human interest features. Events ranging from Dewey's victory at Manila Bay to Theodore Roosevelt's safari in Africa drew his professional attention; but fictional features concerning general characteristics and habits of the human race were his best loved products. By chance a "flop-eared, dough faced hound" became his most widely acclaimed character. Inserted at the corner of a cartoon to fill an untouched space, the dog caught the public's fancy and became a regular in John's cartoons.
