CHRISTOPHER MARLOWE
"Them that love not tobacco and boys are fools." Birthplace

Canterbury, England
Education
The son of a shoemaker, he won a scholarship to Corpus Christi, Cambridge (history, philosophy, theology). His MA was delayed by long absences, possibly spying abroad, and suspicion over his religion.
Other jobs
He was expected to take holy orders after university, but plunged into London's dramatic circle instead - and also, some scholars insist, secret service work abroad for Walsingham, Elizabeth I's secretary of state. He may also have fought in the Low Countries.

CONTENTS:
THE WORKS OF CHRISTOPHER MARLOWE Although the works of Marlowe can be found on the internet, it is not easy to obtain complete versions on a single file, and with modern spelling. I have now managed to complete modernized editions of all of his works in HTML, with the exception of one or two shorter items. Here are the links for the plays:
Tamburlaine the Great, part 1

Tamburlaine the Great, part 2

Edward II

The Jew of Malta

The Massacre at Paris
Doctor Faustus
is quite a large file (over 300KB) as I have shown both the 'A' and 'B' texts next to each other, so that the differences between them are made clear. These are all intended just for reading, rather than for study, so - other than some translations from Latin - no notes are attached. The links for the poetry are: Hero and Leander Lucan's First Book Ovid's Elegies The Passionate Shepherd to his Love The complete works in the original spelling may be found at the Tufts University website.

Christopher Marlowe
Born 6th. February, 1564, in Canterbury, Kent, England; died 30th. May, 1593, in Deptford, London.
English dramatist. His father was a shoemaker and his mother was the daughter of a clergy man. He was educated at King's School, Canterbury until he was 15, and then he took a scholarship at Benet (Corpus Christi) College, Cambridge. His Tamburlaine the Great was a considerable improvement on any tragedy that had been produced in England. Although blank verse had been used before he gave it strength and variety. He prepared the way for William Shakespeare. While at Cambridge Christopher Marlowe met Thomas Watson who was visiting the university. They became close friends and made plans to live together after Marlowe's studies. Thomas Watson introduced Christopher Marlowe to Sir Francis Walsingham, the Secretary of State, who operated a network of spies throughout Europe. Marlowe offered his services and he was sent to Rheims where he spied on the Roman Catholic seminary and sent back information on the priests and students who were secretly planning to return to England. Also while at Cambridge Marlowe met Francis Walsingham's nephew, Thomas, who was then about 17. They became close friends and they often spent time together at Thomas's country house, Scadbury, near Chislehurst, Kent.

Christopher Marlowe was born in Canterbury, the son of a reasonably wealthy shoemaker. He was educated at King's School, Canterbury, and received a scholarship to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where he obtained his BA in 1584. He appears to have been involved in a secret political mission, travelling abroad as a foreign agent. The university authorities suspected him of wishing to enter the English seminary in Rheims as a Catholic convert and it was only through the intervention of the Privy Council that he was awarded his MA in 1587.

    Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus
Background: Marlowe Christopher Marlowe, the first master of blank verse, was born in 1564, and lived for twenty nine intriguing years The son of a shoemaker, he attended Cambridge University on a scholarship from the Archbishop of Canterbury, where he earned a Bachelor's degree. The scholarship had been given with the understanding that Marlowe would become a minister, but Marlowe seems to have had other ideas. Cambridge awarded him a M.A., but only at the behest of the Queen's Privy Council, possibly as part of his compensation for espionage conducted on the continent. He then left Cambridge to write plays for the blossoming theaters of London. A member of the School of Night, along with Sir Walter Raleigh and the mathematician John Dee, Marlowe was also suspected of homosexuality and atheism, and was actually picked up and questioned about the latter just days before his death in a barroom brawlwhich itself has led to speculation about assassinationin 1593. A sampling of the words others claimed to be Marlowe's:
Them that love not tobacco and boys are fools.
