Walter De La Mare Stories from the Bible Introduction
"Very old are we men:
Our dreams are tales
Told in dim Eden
By Eve's nightingales." ("All That's Past") Walter de la Mare was born in 1873 and brought up in an affluent family in Kent. He attended St Paul's School in London. His mother was related to the famous Victorian poet Robert Browning. At the age of sixteen, he left St Paul's to take up a career in accountancy with the Anglo-American Oil Company. During the years he spent in the service of that company (1880-1908), he began to write and continued to do so prolifically throughout his life. He is well known for his poetry, but also wrote prose fiction and non-fiction. Many of his works were written for children. His first publication outside contributions to magazines, Songs of Childhood (1902), was published under the name Walter Ramal to little acclaim. It was only under his real name and in 1912 with The Listeners that he found success. However, in 1908, de la Mare was awarded a government pension of £100 per year and so took up writing full time at Taplow in Buckinghamshire. His distinctive prose works include the prose romance Henry Brocken (1904) where his hero encounters writers from the past, and the ghostly story

CHAPTER I
"But I suppose we are all pretty much the same, if we only knew it," he had consoled himself. "We keep our crazy side to ourselves; that's all. We just go on for years and years doing and saying whatever happens to come upand really keen about it too"he had glanced up with a kind of challenge in his face at the squat little belfry"and then, without the slightest reason or warning, down you go, and it all begins to wear thin, and you get wondering what on earth it all means." Memory slipped back for an instant to the life that in so unusual a fashion seemed to have floated a little aloof. Fortunately he had not discussed these inward symptoms with his wife. How surprised Sheila would be to see him loafing in this old, crooked churchyard! How she would lift her dark eyebrows, with that handsome, indifferent tolerance! He smiled, but a little confusedly; yet the thought gave even a spice of adventure to the evening's ramble. He loitered on, scarcely thinking at all now, stooping here and there. These faint, listless ideas made no more stir than the sunlight gilding the fading leaves, the crisp turf underfoot. With a slight effort he stooped even once again;

Dorothy Pulis Lathrop
Dorothy Lathrop was fortunate to have her career span the end of the golden age of illustration into modern times, for which she has received numerous awards for both her writings and illustrations. Childhood She also credits her paternal grandfather, who owned a bookstore in Bridgeport, Connecticut, for fostering her love of books. This early exposure to literature fired her desire to write and, later, to combine it with her love of art. Education Professional Career Teaching art for two years at the Albany High School made her realize that she would prefer illustrating children’s books. Her first illustrated book, Japanese Prints by John Gould Fletcher, was published in 1919 but unfortunately the publisher went bankrupt before she received payment. Nonetheless, her career was off and running because a new book illustrated by Lathrop appeared almost every year. It was the encouragement of Louise Seaman of the Macmillan Company that gave her the support she needed to try her own hand at writing. The resulting book was The Fairy Circus published in 1931 and was a Newbery Honor book in 1932.

Poems by Walter de la Mare
The Fairies Dancing
I heard along the early hills,
Ere yet the lark was risen up,
Ere yet the dawn with firelight fills
The night-dew of the bramble-cup,
I heard the fairies in a ring
Sing as they tripped a lilting round Soft as the moon on wavering wing. The startlight shook as if with sound, As if with echoing, and the stars Pranked their bright eyes with trembling gleams; While red with war the gusty Mars Rained upon earth his ruddy beams.

    Don Barton Johnson, University of Santa Barbara, California
    Vladimir Nabokov and Walter de la Mare's "Otherworld"
    Nabokov's accounts of his English years are, I am sure, emotionally accurate. There is, however, reason to think that he did not entirely isolate himself from the contemporary English cultural scene. In Speak, Memory , he speaks of the subtle but pernicious influence of the Georgian poets on his own verse. Among them, he singles out two: Rupert Brooke, and Walter de la Mare. Although later revising his high opinion of Brooke, this early enthusiasm was registered in his first published piece of literary criticism: an essay containing several translated poems and commentary on them. It is not the impact of Brooke on Nabokov's own verse, but rather the young Russian's fascination with Brooke's philosophy and public image that is most notable. The 1921 Brooke essay offers the first occurrence of Nabokov's famous as part of his recasting of Brooke's Neo-Platonism. Likewise, his rather free translations display the
