In this inventive and affecting novel, an octogenarian book collector named Mr. Mee discovers the Internet with life-changing results.
Told in turns from the point of view of the endearing, utterly guileless Mr. Mee, two eighteenth-century French philosophers, and a middle-aged university professor, Andrew Crumey's book concerns the creation and mysterious disappearance of Rosier's Encyclopedia, a potentially explosive text written more than 200 years ago that purportedly disproves the existence of the universe. When Mr. Mee comes across a reference to the Xanthics, an obsolete sect that maintained unorthodox beliefs about fire, his hunt for more information compels him to try locating a copy of the singular encyclopedia. Technologically ignorant, Mr. Mee is at last persuaded by his addled housekeeper to conduct a modern search for the book on the Internet. But instead of finding additional clues about Rosier's Encyclopedia, Mr. Mee stumbles upon an image of a naked woman reading from an intriguing text....
Alternating among the three stories, Andrew Crumey takes us closer to the truth about Rosier's Encyclopedia and the secrets it contains. At times funny, often thought-provoking, and utterly engaging

Notes from the Prez
Lisa Wang, President
As the seasons change, so does our chapter. I would like devote part of this issue to highlighting some of the ways which we have been building stronger ties with our neighboring AWIS chapters as well as with National AWIS. On January 23, 2000, the NCC-AWIS committee hosted a recognition awards reception at Takara Sake USA in Berkeley, which was attended by over 40 members of our four local chapters. Thirteen formerly active founders and key contributors to the Bay Area chapters of AWIS were recognized for their volunteer efforts and achievements for AWIS over the past several years. Brief biographies of many of these women may be viewed at our website at www.pa-awis.org The annual NCC-AWIS Awards Banquet held at Genentech on April 26th provided another chance for our four chapters to convene and celebrate the accomplishments of women in science. One special guest was Beth Hutchins, researcher at Canji Pharmaceuticals and former President of AWIS Palo Alto. She is presently a member of AWIS-SD, and she spoke in a brief keynote on the values of mentoring. Additionally, our chapter scholarship committee, led by Ann Reisenauer, was proud to announce our two $500 scholarship winners, Monglan Duong and Vankhanh Tran from Foothill College.

WHITBREAD WINNER
A biographer whose usual subjects are ground-breaking women has won the 2003 Whitbread Book of the Year Award with a book about a man. Claire Tomalin's Samuel Pepys: the unequalled self had already won the Whitbread Biography Prize and was competing against her husband Michael Frayn's novel Spies (the fiction winner) for the supreme award. On January 28, judges awarded her the £30,000 award. It's not the first time Claire Tomalin has won a Whitbread. Her work , published nearly 30 years ago, won the 1974 Whitbread First Book Award . Her other biographies have examined writers Katherine Mansfield, Jane Austen, the famous actress Dora Jordan, Charles Dickens' mistress Nelly Ternan and another famous man: the poet Shelley. Montage Nicholas Shakespeare: At night, before I go to bed, I write a paragraph, that I call to myself ‘pornographic’. It must be something I’ve never admitted to myself. Hilary Mantel: What you’re doing is you’re making a complete world inside your head, independent of what’s going on day by day. And that’s the place you have to go to when you sit down to write. Nicholas Shakespeare: These paragraphs are kind of like bushfire that you can bring into and light up when sections of your book flare up. Writers on Writing Robert Drewe: I was playing in the park one Saturday afternoon with my son, and just had a sort of sudden feeling that what I wanted to do was to write novels, and I would stop what I was doing and immediately start. So I did. Hilary Mantel: The first you need is a huge measure of arrogance. Nobody else believes in you. You have to have the courage of your convictions, write the book you want to write. That’s the only advice that I can really pass on.

Babel Tower
A. S. Byatt
Random House, $25.95
I thought about Nelson on the train this morning. this hugely ambitious novel, the third volume of a projected tetralogy, continues the tale of Frederica Potter, erstwhile Yorkshire schoolgirl and Cambridge undergraduate, now immured in her villainous husband's "moated grange," by returning her in a harrowing escape to the London world of letters where she must make her way as lecturer, reviewer, and single mother. But it is even more a tale of the 1960's and, above all, an exploration of language, its powers and its limitations. Accordingly Byatt intersperses Frederica's story and its host of voices with extended sections of a novel, "Bsabbletower," transcripts of the obscenity trial that it occasions, transcripts of Frederica's divorce and child custody trials, and selections from her "laminations" or commonplace book. In the '60s, as Byatt evokes them in almost overwhelming profusion, the traditional limits of decency and discourse are explored, strained, shattered. . . and babble reigns. Future historians will be grateful for her lavish portrait. Present readers will be gratified. Hardy Long

Good Bumps for Servitude, A Forgotten Encounter, Magnets Again, Patenting Sandwiches (?), Reiki Nonsense, Hellish Nell, and Van Praagh Strikes Out. I recently mentioned the gift to the JREF library of a collection of books on phrenology. In one volume, "Heads and How to Read Them" (That's the title, I kid you not!) subtitled, "A Popular Guide to Phrenology," (1932) under Chapter 18, "How to choose Servants," we read: Service is altogether honourable if rightly understood, The General Servant, Cook, Housekeeper, Butler, Coachman, Labourer, each and all good if his or her qualities and powers are of a suitable sort. PLATE XVIII shows to us five heads, each denoting some special department for which its possessor would be suited, in connection with domestic work. No. 1 presents to us a good specimen of a general servant, one who will do anything within the compass of her capacities. Though she does not possess that formation of head which would denote any special department beyond that of a general worker or household help, great confidence may be placed in her to do her best with much readiness under a variety of circumstances. This head denotes a domesticated mind, therefore she will be inclined to remain in a family for a lengthened period. As her Philoprogenitiveness is prominent she will manifest strong affection for the children and younger members of the family. As her Veneration is large she will have great respect for those in authority over her, while her Conscientiousness will make her most trustworthy. Her organ of Secretiveness is prominent; this will cause her to be very reserved at first, but with time she will acquire much confidence, and be thoroughly at her ease with those she may consider her superiors. From a family point of view, this Secretiveness combined with small language, will be of advantage. She is not one of these gossiping women who will retail every word and sentence heard, and that generally to the disadvantage of the speakers. Her organ of Self-esteem being rather small she will not be constantly thinking of her own importance and, as is frequently the case with others, place herself above authority.
