    Thomas Robert Malthus
    February 13, 1766-December 29, 1834
Perhaps nothing in all of history has had as devastating an impact on social relations as Thomas Malthus's Essay on the Principle of Population , which was published in six editions between 1798 and 1826. Malthus, ironically, was one of eight children born just south of London to an aristocratic family. He studied at Oxford, and subsequently became a parson in the Church of England. He taught political science at Haileybury College, a school established specifically to train public officials for service with the imperial British East India Company.
In his population essay, Malthus made three basic points: first , he claimed human population tends to increase by multiplication; second , he argued that the means of sustenance for human population increases only incrementally, as in addition, thereby having a slower rate of natural increase than population; and, third , he contended that the rate of population growth should be restricted in order that it be balanced with food production, saying that, were this not done, nature would eliminate what he called the "redundant" people through hunger or disease.
Birth control did not exist in Malthus's time, which begs the question as to

Malthus, Thomas An Essay on the Principle of Population (1st Edition) . Introduction by Samuel Hollander. Distributed for the Thoemmes Press. 1798 Edition. 463 p. 1798 , 1999 Cloth CUSA $120.00tx 1-85506-781-1 An Essay on the Principle of Population by Thomas Robert Malthus (1766-1834) is one of the most influential and controversial books in the history of social and economic thought. First published anonymously in 1798, and the result of a discussion with his father on the perfectibility of society, it was originally intended as a response to ideas developed in Godwin's Enquirer and Political Justice . The essay is based around Malthus's famous principle of population: that as population increases geometrically, pressure is placed on the earth's agricultural resources, which can only increase at an arithmetic rate; hence Malthus's prediction of mass starvation. His argument further maintained that population is prevented from increasing beyond the food supply by positive (war, famine and pestilence) and preventive (abortions, infanticides and birth control) checks. The principle was and remains one of the most widely debated of modern economic theories. These volumes reveal all the major and minor changes Malthus made in the Essay in the twenty-eight years that separate the appearance of the first and sixth editions. Considered cumulatively, these reworkings show the progression and modification of Malthus's thinking in the light of the hostile criticism and lively debate it provoked.

    Malthus, Thomas Robert
born Feb. 14/17, 1766, Rookery, near Dorking, Surrey, Eng.
died Dec. 23, 1834, St. Catherine, near Bath, Somerset English economist and demographer, best known for his theory that population growth will always tend to outrun the food supply and that betterment of the lot of mankind is impossible without stern limits on reproduction. Malthus was of a prosperous family. His father, a personal friend of the philosopher and skeptic David Hume, was an ardent disciple of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, whose book The opinions and teachings that Malthus developed reflect largely a reaction, amiably conducted, to his father's views and to the doctrines of the French Revolution and its supporters. The English radical philosopher William Godwin , for example, was being widely read for such works as Political Justice (1793), which took for granted the perfectibility of mankind and foresaw a millennium in which rational men would live prosperously and harmoniously without laws and institutions. Unlike Godwin (or, earlier, Rousseau), who viewed human affairs from a theoretical standpoint, Malthus was essentially an empiricist, and he began from the harsh realities of his time. His reaction developed in the tradition of British economics, which would today be called sociological. In 1798 he published anonymously the first edition of An Essay on the Principle of Population as it affects the Future Improvement of Society, with Remarks on the Speculations of Mr. Godwin, M. Condorcet, and other Writers.
