Stephane Mallarme
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Stéphane Mallarmé ) was a French poet and writer Mallarmé was a major French symbolist poet and rightly famed for his salons , occasional gatherings of intellectuals at his house for discussions of poetry, art, philosophy. His fin-de-siecle style is anticipatory of many of the developments in fusions between art and poetry which were to blossom in the Dadaist Surrealist and Futurist schools, where the tension between the words on the page and the way in which they were displayed was paramount. But whereas most of the latter work was concerned principally with form, Mallarmé's work was concerned with style and content: this is particularly evident in the highly innovative Un Coup de Dés (trans. "A roll of the dice") of

The moon grew sad. Seraphim in tears,/ Dreaming the bow in their fingers, in the calm of the vaporous/Flowers, drew from dying viols/ White sighs gliding on the azure of the corollas./ It was the blessed day of your first kiss./ My daydream, taking pleasure in tormenting me,/ Became knowingly drunk on that perfume of sadness/ Which even without regret and without disappointment is left/ By the culling of a Dream in the heart that has culled it./ Thus I wandered, my eyes fixed on the pavement grown old,/ When with sunlight in your hair, in the street/ And in the evening, you appeared to me laughing/ And I thought I saw the fairy with the hat of brightness/Who once would pass through my beautiful spoiled child's/ Slumbers, always letting her not-quite-hands/ Snow down white bouquets of perfumed stars. " (Apparition, Applebaum 119)
Morrison "He follows a woman into the firmament/ The solids, sonnets/ elaborate requisitions for the god-soul/ / ah my bright jewelled town/ a Widow's band/ roping sailors and hill-folk together/ congeal on this flat spire/ to partake of mineral jets/ "he's sick" he should be sleeping/ peaceful by air, a movie of dead nights/ in a wound, suffer to give out/ your red-blue lighter's flame/ w/calm precision/ your certainty lives in a match/or a mind " (Lines 1-15 of "He Follows A Woman . . ."

The Afternoon of a Faun by Stephane Mallarme Translation from French by Roger Fry Paintings by Rebecca A. Barrington These nymphs I would perpetuate. So clear Their light carnation, that it floats in the air Heavy with tufted slumbers. Was it a dream I loved? My doubt, a heap of ancient night, is finishing In many a subtle branch, which, left the true Wood itself, proves, alas! that all alone I gave Myself for triumph the ideal sin of roses. Let me reflect . . .if the girls of which you tell Figure a wish of your fabulous senses! Faun, the illusion escapes from the blue eyes And cold, like a spring in tears, of the chaster one: But, the other, all sighs, do you say she contrasts Like a breeze of hot day in your fleece! But no! through the still, weary faintness Choking with heat the fresh morn if it strives, No water murmurs but what my flute pours On the chord sprinkled thicket; and the sole wind Prompt to exhale from my two pipes, before

Mallarmé was a provincial school teacher who came to Paris to live a bourgeois life on the rue de Rome, but published allusive, compressed poems, which suggested rather than denoted. He saw that his purified language gives "a purer meaning to the words of the tribe." (from the sonnet on Edgar Allan Poe)

The Flowers of Evil , which had appeared in 1857. Under its influence he wrote 'Briese marine,' starting with the much quoted line line "Le chair est triste, hélas! et j'ai lu tous les livres". After leaving school he visited England and while in London he married Marie Gerhard. Mallarmé taught English in from 1864 in Tournon, Besançon, Avignon, and Paris until his retirement in 1893. His first poems started to appear in magazines in the 1860s. Mallarmé's first important poem, 'L'Azur', was published when he was 24. All his life Mallarmé spent a very long time on each of his poems, making them as perfect as possible. His best-known work is L'APRÉS-MIDI D'UN FAUNE (1865), which inspired Debussy's tone poem (1894) of the same name and was illustrated by the famous painter Manet. The poem presents the wandering thoughts of a faun on a drowsy summer afternoon. "Forgetful let me lie where summer's drouth / Sifts fine the sand and then with gaping mouth / Dream planet-struck by the grape's round wine-red star. / Nymphs, I shall see the shade that now you are."

Parnassian early in his literary career. During the 1860s he increasingly adopted a Baudelairean approach to poetry, eventually cultivating an even more variegated play of associations and, through his frequent use of ellipses and of ambiguous sentence structure, a more pervasive sense of the mystery of even everyday subjects.

The principal elements of Baudelairean aesthetics emerge in Mallarme's answers. The praise of obscurity can be linked with Baudelaire's own advocacy of obscurity as well as mystery.

SCHED A
