HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Mailer, Norman Kingsley US writer Norman Mailer, US poet Allen Ginsberg, and US anthropologist Ashley Montagu, on a US television show, c. 1970. (Image © Archive Photos) US writer and journalist. One of the most prominent figures of post-war American literature, he gained wide attention with his first, best-selling book The Naked and the Dead (1948), a naturalistic war novel. His later works, which use sexual and scatological material, show his personal engagement with history, politics, and psychology. Always a pugnacious and controversial writer, his polemics on the theory and practice of violence-as-sex brought him into direct conflict with feminist Kate Millet in a series of celebrated debates during the 1970s. His essay White Negro in Advertisements for Myself (1959), defining the hipster hero, was a seminal statement of the artistic need to rebel against cultural conformity. His other books include his dark thriller of sex and power

"I Am Not For World Empire" A conversation with Norman Mailer about Iraq, Israel, the perils of technology and why he is a Left-Conservative.
The vagaries of literary reputation are not the main beat of The American Conservative, What follows is a conversation about what most interested the four of us on that day, as well as an addendum Mailer wrote later. We spoke of the present and future more than the past: a mixture of politics (Iraq, the imperial urge, styles of conservatism) and more typically Maileresque themes (the problem of technology). After several hours of talk and the gracious hospitality of Norris Church Mailer we made our way back to normal life, not doubting that we had spent an extraordinary afternoon with the greatest living American writer. AMERICAN CONSERVATIVE: NORMAN MAILER: (Terry Quinn, co-author) in six capitals over two visits. I think that is a part of it. Americans need mythos, certainly, in the literary world. Nationally, we have Abraham Lincoln and George Washington and FDR and Camelot, and in some quarters I fear there is Ronald Reagan, but nonetheless, in the literary world, it is probably Hemingway and Fitzgerald and Zelda, the nearest thing to a literary mythos within living reach. People take to it. AC: Why do you think so? Because they are good, but not necessarily the best.

Norman Mailer
A Literary Lion Roars
By Carolyn T. Hughes
ORMAN Mailer rarely gives interviews anymore; they distract from his writing. Instead, the father of five daughters and four sons lives a quiet life with his sixth wife, Norris Church Mailer, dividing his time between homes in Brooklyn Heights and Provincetown, on Cape Cod. Once Mailer does consent to talk for the record, however, he holds nothing back. Both delightful and fierce, Mailer drives a conversation like Coney Island's notorious Cyclone roller coaster. And as he looks back on the highs and lows of his colorful career, you realize it's been one hell of a ride.
Like Byron, Mailer awoke one morning to find himself famous. In 1948, just four years out of the army, the 25-year-old Mailer published

Norman Mailer Turns 80
NEW YORK, Jan. 29, 2003
Mailer in his Brookyln Heights apartment. (CBS/AP)
"He never once looked into my eyes ... I realized that's why this man has risen so high. He's never made the mistake of talking to a man who was of no use to him."
Norman Mailer on Ronald Reagan
Mailer and wife Norris Church Mailer in 2001. (CBS)
(AP) Norman Mailer did not expect to make it to 40, and now finds himself twice that age.
He has lived longer than Ernest Hemingway and most of his other literary heroes. His body aches, but his mind remains strong. But a man famous for swooning to his own song does none of that during a recent interview. While he plans to celebrate with family and friends, he also worries. "I always liked the number 80. ... But I think you pass a certain border at that point. How long are you going to be able to keep writing? There are not that many good writers at 80," says Mailer, whose birthday is Friday. The author of such classics as "The Naked and the Dead" and "The Executioner's Song" has just published "The Spooky Art," a work on writing that's as much compiled as it is written.

In a Newsnight interview, he tells Kirsty Wark how the aftermath of the attacks has affected America. Mr Mailer believes people will be writing about 11 September for a long time. He has written about the horrors of war in Vietnam, and served in the US army during World War II. But, he believes that nothing compares in magnitude to the attacks on New York and Washington. This includes the atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki which ended the Second World War. Norman Mailer was one of the major US writers of the twentieth century, and came to prominence following his debut book "The Naked and the Dead" which drew on his experience in the Pacific during World War Two. Cultural changes He spoke to Kirsty Wark following a special investigation by Newsnight reporter Madeleine Holt. She travelled to America to discover whether there has been a cultural shift since 11 September.
Allah is a concept that is absolutely foreign to Americans
Norman Mailer Newsnight found that the University of California in Los Angeles had set up fifty courses on "Perspectives on September 11th." All 700 places on the courses have been taken.

Jubilare
