Synopsis Inspired by the art of Georges Seurat, the nineteenth-century pointilliste painter, specifically a painting entitled "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte," Act1 A Sunday in Paris in 1884. Georges, an artist who is experimenting with innovative painting techniques, is seated in front of a bare white stage, blank drawing-pad in hand. He is trying to paint a study of his mistress, Dot, on an island somewhere in the Seine. Dot is not turning out to be the most cooperative subject, fidgeting and complaining. For Dot, it's just another SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE. In the painter's studio, Dot sits at a vanity mirror powdering her face, while, in an identical rhythm, Georges dabs spots of red and purple and white on his new painting: it's only COLOUR AND LIGHT. She is preparing to go to the Follies with him, but his painting proves more important -he has to stay to finish a hat. Dot leaves in a rage, realising that for Georges, his art will always come first.

Trumpeter, clarinettist, composer, cartoonist, author, broadcaster and genuine wit, he is also a calligraphist (his own label is called Calligraph), plays piano and alto horn and is an expert on ornithology - an extraordinarily talented man who has fully exercised his inborn gifts. A truly exceptional character; a scion of an ancient aristocratic family, who went to Eton College (his father, George, was a master there) who became a jazz trumpeter and is now in his 53rd year as a bandleader. Apart from considerable ability on his instruments, his aristocratic background was undoubtedly a great boost to his becoming a household name, and in his highly entertaining autobiography, aptly titled I Play As I Please, he acknowledges the publicity value of a background not usually associated with jazz musicians. Most bandleaders had to look for angles to publicise themselves, but his was ready-made.

Author: Jim Buckenmyer
Published on: April 21, 2000 Events taking place far away from Fort Loudon were to lead to a schism in the relations between the British and the Cherokee. The French continued to work toward stirring up discord. French agents were often in the Cherokee towns talking to whoever would listen. They discouraged many of the Cherokee from accepting any gifts or trade goods from the British. One common theme was that the British were poisoning the goods or infecting them with smallpox. On General Forbes' Fort Duquense campaign greater conflict arose between the British and the Cherokee that went along to assist them. General Forbes had very little respect for the natives. He did not distinguish between friendly and enemy Indians. The Cherokee could not plead their case because there were to few interpreters. Bands of Cherokee warriors began drifting back to their homes. After finding that the French had abandoned Fort Duquense even Attakullakulla left with his band. General Forbes ordered him arrested for desertion, disarmed and sent back under guard. Other returning warriors felt that they were owed some reward as Forbes had denied them their share of the spoils. They came upon a small herd of horses in the Virginia backcountry and took several. The settlers gave chase and a running battle ensued. There were casualties on both sides. During this battle the settlers took some scalps as the British were paying a bounty for Indian scalps.

by Alan Bennett Premiered at the Royal National Theatre /Lyttelton on 28 November 1991. In 1992 the production toured to Newcastle, Sheffield, Bath, Bradford, and Edinburgh. The play returned to the Lyttelton repertoire on 17 July 1993 and toured America (Truglia Theatre, Rich Forum, Stamford CT; Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York City; Morris Mechanic Theatre, Baltimore; and Colonial Theatre, Boston) from September to November 1993, before returning to the Lyttelton. Cast changes for the American tour are shown in italics . It's also interesting to note that some characters disappeared altogether (marked with ) in the Boston production. According to an expert: "...the cast of Madness wasn't reduced just for the benefit of the American audience: Alan Bennett decided to take these bits and pieces out (the modern doctor, the painter, scenes in Parliament, chunks of Pitt's dialogue), because he thought they weren't essential and were only hampering the play's 'natural progress'. When the play returned to the Lyttelton in the autumn of 1993, those scenes were gone for good. Both versions have been published by Faber and Faber A well-informed source reports that slight adjustments were indeed made to accommodate American political sensibilities when Madness toured the 'former colonies' - most notably in Pitt's line, "I know that I can save this country and no one else can, but I needed five more years...". It apparently didn't work at all the first few nights, so Nick Hytner suggested he try "four more years" instead. [The editor can confirm that this went down a treat with the Boston audience.]

http://www.state.sc.us/scdah/exhibits/cherokee/7a-FRONTIERWARFARE.htm
FRONTIER WARFARE For more than fifty years Britain and France struggled to gain control of the interior of North America with indecisive results. The Cherokee frequently found themselves courted by both sides. Although they initially sided with Britain, they were at war with the redcoats by the end of the 1750s. Cultural misunderstandings, trade abuses, and the inept hand of South Carolina’s newly appointed royal governor, William Henry Lyttelton (1756-1760), all contributed to the breakdown. Responding to isolated Cherokee attacks, Lyttelton placed an embargo on the Indians’ trade goods. In a further attempt to restore order, he gathered an army of militiamen, provincial troops, and a small detachment of Independents and left Charles Town for the Keowee valley in October 1759. After arriving at Fort Prince George, Lyttelton watched fretfully as his force melted away from desertion and disease. He hastily concluded a treaty and retreated to Charles Town, leaving twenty-one Cherokee peace delegates confined in the fort as hostages. Muster roll of Captain Alexander McIntosh’s company of the Upper Craven County Battalion, South Carolina Militia. These troops accompanied Governor Lyttelton to Fort Prince George in 1759. Research indicates that these men were from present-day Marion, Dillon, and Florence counties.

Moa egg found in Fyffe House foundations
31 January 2003 By TONY ORMAN
Last week this column told of a moa egg discovery at the Wairau Bar in 1839. More than 80 years before the Wairau discovery, a similar discovery was made at Kaikoura.
In 1857 a moa egg from the giant moa Dinornis was discovered by a labourer digging the foundation of a building at George Fyffe's Kaikoura whaling station. George Fyffe was the nephew of Scottish immigrant Alexander Robert Fyfe, who was probably the first Kaikoura sheep farmer, a whaler and a successful businessman. After abortively trying to establish a whaling station in Cloudy Bay, Robert Fyfe set up one on the north east face of the Kaikoura Peninsula. A strange twist was that Robert spelt his name with just one "f" while George chose a double "ff". "Such discrepancies of spelling were not uncommon within families at this period," according to Michael Trotter and Beverley McCulloch in Fyffe's Revisited Records of the Canterbury Museum, 1993.
