He called them canali , an Italian word meaning channels . The canali were also observed by Lowell who concluded they were canals built by intelligent beings. The canals supposedly supplied water from the melting polar caps to a desert world. In his book " Mars as the Abode of Life ", published in 1908, Percival Lowell presented his theory that Mars' canals were built by intelligent beings.

Now according to our research, we found out that Mars exploration is everything but that and so we plan to teach the people what Mars exploration is really about and what we need to expect in order to reach Mars.

    Chapter III. Water
    I. The Polar Cap
After air, water. If Mars be capable of supporting life, there must be water upon his surface; for, to all forms of life, water is as vital a matter as air. On the question of habitability, therefore, it becomes all-important to know whether there be water on Mars. To the solution of this inquiry, also, the planet's polar cap turns out to hold the key. For just as the fact of change in the cap proves the presence of air, so the manner of that change implies the presence of water. It not only does this; it turns out to do a deal more. For to the whole water question it appears to play the part not only of occasion but of cause. In more senses than one, it is in that great glistening white patch that our water problem takes its rise. On the 3d of June, 1894, the south polar cap stretched, almost one unbroken waste of white, over about 55 degrees of latitude. A degree on Mars measures 37 miles; consequently the cap was 2,035 miles across. Inasmuch as the inclination of the Martian equator to the plane of the Martian orbit is, according to Schiaparelli, 24 degrees 52', it must have then covered more than the whole south frigid zone of the planet. Now, to take in the full meaning of the condition of the cap at this time and of the changes that ensued, we must begin by determining the Martian time of year. This is done by fixing the dates at which the Martian pole reached its maximum tilt toward or from the Sun, and the dates at which it was not tilted either to or from, but sideways to, the Sun; the former gives us the Martian solstices, and the latter the Martian equinoxes. It thus appears that on April 7, 1894, occurred the vernal equinox of the Martian southern hemisphere, on August 31, its summer solstice, and on February 7, 1895, its autumnal equinox. From these dates it is easy to transform the one calendar into the other. On the 3d of June, 1894, therefore, it was about May 1 on the southern hemisphere of Mars.

Founder of the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, strong supporter of the theory of canals on the planet Mars, first to realize the possibility of a ninth planet beyond the orbit of Neptune. Percival Lowell was born in 1855 to a distinguished New England family. His younger brother was president of Harvard University and his sister was a well-known writer. Lowell also attended Harvard and graduated in 1876 with a distinction in mathematics. After traveling in the Far East for a number of years, he eventually developed a fond interest in astronomy. He was particularly interested in Mars and its "canals" that had supposedly been discovered by the Italian astronomer, Schaparelli. In 1894, Lowell founded the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. The observatory was ideally situated at an altitude of 7000 feet. The high altitude combined with the dry desert air made this site ideal for observing Mars, which was at that time very close to the Earth. Lowell observed the red planet for 15 years. He made intricate and detailed drawings of the planet's surface showing a complex network of intersecting lines and dark regions. Lowell believed these lines to be canals built by an advanced civilization of intelligent beings. He asserted that these canals were being used by a desperate race to transport precious water from the planet's icy poles. The dark regions were believed to be oases of green vegetation made possible by the irrigating canals. Lowell published these theories in three books:

PEOPLE IN AMERICA - February 10, 2002: Percival Lowell
By Mario Ritter VOICE ONE: I'm Mary Tillotson. VOICE TWO: And I'm Bob Doughty with the VOA Special English program People in America. Today, we tell about Percival Lowell whose work led to the discovery of the planet Pluto. His efforts and imagination helped change the history of astronomy in America. ((THEME)) VOICE ONE: Percival Lowell came from a New England family with a long history in America. The Lowell family first came to the colony of Massachussetts in Sixteen-Thirty-Nine. One of Percival Lowell's ancestors, John Cabot Lowell, manufactured cloth. He became an important American industrialist in the late Eighteenth and early Nineteenth Centuries. Percival's father, Augustus Lowell, worked in the family cloth business. He settled his family in Boston, Massachusetts. Percival was born there in Eighteen-Fifty-Five. He had a younger brother, Abbott Lawrence and a younger sister, Amy. VOICE TWO: Percival Lowell attended American and European private schools as a young man. He studied mathematics at Harvard University. After he finished his studies at Harvard in Eighteen-Seventy-Six, he traveled in Europe and the Middle East for a year. Then he worked as a financial officer in the cloth business of his grandfather. After several years, Percival realized he was not happy as a businessman. So he decided to travel to Japan to study its culture and language. While there, he was asked to go with a special trade group from Korea to establish trade relations with the United States.

PERCIVAL LOWELL AND LAFCADIO HEARN: CONDUITS OF JAPANESE CULTURE
Bostonian Percival Lowell traveled to Japan in the 1880s, producing the first serious studies of the country for the American public. His writing inspired Lafcadio Hearn to settle in Japan, ultimately to become the most popular American conduit of Japanese culture of his generation. Percival Lowell. The Soul of the Far East . Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1888. Lowell's book differed from earlier reports about the Japanese by treating his hosts as co-equals, not as an underdeveloped people. Its binding reflects Orientalism in book design. Percival Lowell. Occult Japan; or, The Way of the Gods; An Esoteric Study of Japanese Personality and Possession . Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1895. Lowell's last book on Japan reflects his fascination with religious customs and shrines. Lafcadio Hearn. Kotto . . . Being Japanese Curios, with Sundry Cobwebs . New York: The Macmillan Company, 1902. After reading Lowell's The Soul of the Far East , Hearn not only moved to Japan but also married a Japanese, learned the language, and adopted Japanese dress. Appointed lecturer in English at the Imperial University at Tokyo, he published his reflections on Japanese life for an American audience. Quoted in Basil Chamberlain's widely popular
