Lowell, Percival (1855-1916)
Born into a wealthy and well-known Bostonian family, Lowell gave no early indication of the obsession that would come to dominate his life and create an enduring romance involving extraterrestrial canals (see Mars, canals of ) and an advanced Martian civilization (see Mars, life on ). At Harvard, where for 24 years his brother was president, he showed a talent for mathematics and even presented an astronomical address entitled "The Nebular Hypothesis". But following his graduation, he devoted the next 17 years to family business concerns and three extended stays in the Orient. He served as Foreign Secretary and Counselor to the first Korean diplomatic mission and, during his time in Korea and Japan, wrote four books on Eastern thought and culture. Then, for some reason which is not entirely clear, he caught the Mars bug. Perhaps he had been inspired by reading Flammarion 's popular treatise on the planet. Or, it may have been Schiaparelli 's work that influenced him directly. Certainly, as early as 1890, he had begun to correspond with William

    Lowell, Percival
US astronomer who predicted the existence of a planet beyond Neptune, starting the search that led to the discovery of Pluto 1930. In 1894 he founded the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, where he reported seeing 'canals' (now known to be optical effects and natural formations) on the surface of Mars.
Lowell was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and studied mathematics at Harvard. He spent 16 years in business and diplomacy, mainly in the Far East, before taking up astronomy, becoming professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology 1902.
Influenced strongly by the work of Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli, Lowell set up his observatory at Flagstaff originally with the sole intention of confirming the presence of advanced life forms on Mars. He thought he could make out a complex and regular network of canals and regular seasonal variations that to him indicated agricultural activity. He led an expedition to the Chilean Andes in 1907 which produced the first high-quality photographs of the planet.

    I. First Appearances In the last chapter we saw how badly off for water Mars, to all appearance, is; so badly off that inhabitants of that other world would have to irrigate to live. As to the actual presence there of such folk, the broad physical characteristics of the planet express no opinion beyond the silence of consent, but they have something very vital to say about the conditions under which alone their life could be led. They show that these conditions must be such that in the Martian mind there would be one question perpetually paramount to all the local labor, women's suffrage, and Eastern questions put togetherthe water question. How to procure water enough to support life would be the great communal problem of the day. Now, at this point in our investigation, when the broad features of Mars disclose conditions which imply irrigation as their organic corollary, we are suddenly confronted on the planet's face with phenomena so startlingly suggestive of this very thing as to seem its uncanny presentment. Indeed, so amazingly lifelike is their appearance that, had we possessed our present knowledge of the planet's physical condition before, we might almost have predicted what we see as criterion of the presence of living beings. What confronts us is this:

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Percival Lowell came from a distinguished New England family. His younger brother Abbott became the president of Harvard University, and his sister Amy was a well-known poet and critic of the time. After his graduation from Harvard in 1876, with distinction in mathematics, he traveled for a number of years throughout the Far East before settling down to a career in astronomy. Between 1877 and 1893 Lowell traveled extensively in Japan and Korea and later wrote books about East Asia and his travels. Mars Mars and Its Canals and Mars as the Abode of Life (1908). The canals, as we now know, were the chance alignment of dark and light patches that the eye tends to string together into lines. From 1902 until his death, he was a nonresident professor of astronomy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he wrote two more books on his views of a Trans-Netunian planet: Memoir on a Trans-Neptunian Planet (1915), and
