Augustus Baldwin Longstreet Alexandra Slade Augustus Baldwin Longstreet was a distinguished Georgian. He was born in Augusta, Georgia on September 22, 1790. He died on July 8, 1870. His parents were yeoman farmers and had moved to the south from New Jersey. Augustus had a fine education. He attended a preparatory school in South Carolina and then went to college at Yale. He also studied law in Litchfield, Connecticut. Longstreet had many careers during his lifetime. At first, he was a lawyer and a judge, riding the circuit from town to town in middle Georgia. Later he wrote a book of stories, Georgia Scenes , which was based on his experiences as a lawyer. He was also in politics, until the death of his eldest son. After that, he decided to devote his life to being a Methodist minister. He also served as a college president at four institutions: Emory College in Georgia, Centenary College in Louisiana, the University of Mississippi, and the University of South Carolina. Augustus Longstreet was a handsome and well-respected man. He was clean-shaven, with dark hair, and sometimes wore glasses. He wore formal clothes appropriate to his jobs. When he was young, he was humorous, but became serious when he grew old, particularly after the death of his son. Longstreet made several important contributions to Georgia and the country as well. His book

http://web.csd.sc.edu/uscmap/bldg/longstreet.html
This familiar landmark , built along the lines of a Roman temple, was designed originally as a chapel and auditorium for the growing enrollment of South Carolina College. From its inception the building was ill-fated. Completion was two years late, the roof blew off twice, and the poor acoustics were apparently incorrectable. The building was used as a military hospital during the Civil War, and the state legislature met there briefly after the war. From 1870 to 1887 it served as an arsenal and armory for the adjutant and inspector general of South Carolina. Finally, because the acoustical problem was never solved, it was converted into a science facility in 1888 and then a gymnasium in 1893. With the remodeling of the building as a theatre in 1976, it has at last found a purpose complementing its architectural grace. Formerly two stories, it is now essentially four stories, featuring a circular stage surrounded by seating. An "effects" sound system and a hydraulic stage capable of accepting one or two wagon stage covers add to the versatility. The main entrance is now at the rear of the building, where a graceful courtyard welcomes theatregoers. The adjacent building, formerly a swimming pool, houses a shop support area and costume construction shop. Augustus B. Longstreet (1790-1870), the colorful and controversial jurist, writer, and educator who served as president of South Carolina College from 1857 to 1861, is perhaps most widely known for his collection of sketches

Sept. 30, 1863.
FRIEND COMMERCIAL: When I wrote you last it was from Winchester, Tenn., and I then told you, I believe, that the next time you heard form me, my letter should be dated in Chattanooga, that far-famed and long blowed about rebel strongholdand so you see I have told you the truth for once, if I never did before. Yes, we drove the rebels out, and took possession some two weeks ago, and after we had taken possession we thought we might as well travel on a "wee bit" further, and see what we could find, and "snatch um in," but before we had got more than a few Tennessee miles out from Chattanooga, we ran against something Sesesh but the substance was so "soft" that it didn't hurt us much, and, as for the "scare,"why we wouldn't run a step. The consequence was that Bragg and Rosy had to have a fight right there, and so fight we had it. The rebels try to claim a victory, but they say that as "Rosy" still holds Chattanooga, they can hardly call it a victory after all. Yes, "Rosy" has Chattanooga and intends to keep it, and that is what hurts the rebels. Now let all those who have no better sense say that invincible "Rosy" was defeated and thrown back upon Chattanooga in a panic, as much as they please, for it does not hurt or discourage the boys, under his command, in the least. Gen. "Rosy" has always been all right, is all right now, and every one here believes that he is the right man for the future. There is no time, when he is passing up and down the line, but that he is greeted with prolonged and hearty cheering from every man, which very plainly shows that we have the greatest confidence in him, and are willing to follow him to the other side of "Dixie," where he is bound to lead us.

"The Shooting Match" by Augustus Baldwin Longstreet (1835) Shooting matches are probably nearly coeval with the colonization of Georgia. They are still common throughout the Southern States; though they are not as common as they were twenty-five or thirty years ago. Chance led me to one about a year ago. I was travelling in one of the north-eastern counties, when I overtook a swarthy, bright-eyed, smerky little fellow, riding a small poney, and bearing on his shoulder a long heavy rifle, which, judging from its looks, I should say had done service in Morgan's corps. "Good morning, sir!" said I, reining up my horse as I came beside him. "How goes it stranger?" said he, with a tone of independence and selfconfidence, that awaked my curiosity to know a little of his character. "Going driving?" inquired I. "Not exactly," replied he, surveying my horse with a quizical smile, "I haven't been a driving by myself for a year or two, and my nose has got so bad lately I can't carry a cold trail without hounds to help me." Alone, and without hounds, as he was, the question was rather a silly one; but it answered the purpose for which it was put, which was only to draw him into conversation, and I proceede to make as decent a retreat as I could.

A Sense of Where We Are: One State's View of Federal Compliance Archeology by J.W. Joseph "Those who are curious to know where Springfield stood, at the time of which I am speaking [1798], have only to take their position at the intersection of Broad and Marbury Streets, in the city of Augusta, and they will be in the very heart of old Springfield. Sixty steps West, and as many East of this position, will measure the whole length of this Jeffersonian Republican village, which never boasted more than four dwelling-houses; and Broad-street, measures its width, if we exclude kitchens and stables." Georgia chronicler Augustus Longstreet, like many of his contemporaries, suffered from a social and historical form of deutronopia—quite literally, color-blindness. For at the time Longstreet wrote of, Springfield was more than four dwelling houses, kitchens, and stables. It was also the home to some 98 free African Americans, one of the larger communities of its kind in the Old South.
