Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Biography
written by Roberto Rabe Probably the best loved of American poets the world over is Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Many of his lines are as familiar to us as rhymes from Mother Goose or the words of nursery songs learned in early childhood. Like these rhymes and melodies, they remain in the memory and accompany us through life. There are two reasons for the popularity and significance of Longfellow's poetry. First, he had the gift of easy rhyme. He wrote poetry as a bird sings, with natural grace and melody. Read or heard once or twice, his rhyme and meters cling to the mind long after the sense may be forgotten. Second, Longfellow wrote on obvious themes which appeal to all kinds of people. His poems are easily understood; they sing their way into the consciousness of those who read them. Above all, there is a joyousness in them, a spirit of optimism and faith in the goodness of life which evokes immediate response in the emotions of his readers. Americans owe a great debt to Longfellow because he was among the first of American writers to use native themes. He wrote about the American scene and landscape, the American Indian ('Song of Hiawatha'), and American history and tradition ('The Courtship of Miles Standish', 'Evangeline'). At the beginning of the 19th century, America was a stumbling babe as far as a culture of its own was concerned. The people of America had spent their years and their energies in carving a habitation out of the wilderness and in fighting for independence. Literature, art, and music came mainly from Europe and especially from England. Nothing was considered worthy of attention unless it came from Europe.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was the most popular and influential American poet of the 19th century and had the widest range and greatest technical skill of all the poets of "the flowering of New England." He influenced the poetic taste of generations of readers throughout the English-speaking world. Combining gentility with the common touch, he was equally successful in lyric and narrative poetry and during his later years became a master of the sonnet. Ballads like The Wreck of the Hesperus and Paul Revere's Ride were familiar to every schoolchild, and Evangeline (1847) became the first enduringly successful long poem written in the United States. His exploration of Indian lore in The Song of Hiawatha (1855) showed his skill in the use of American subject matter, and as a pioneer in the teaching of modern languages, he helped introduce Americans to the literature of Europe.
Longfellow was educated at Bowdoin College, from which he graduated in 1825. He then pursued further studies in Europe and in 1829 became a professor at Bowdoin. From 1835 to 1854 he was Smith Professor of Modern Languages at Harvard. He was twice married, first to Mary Storer Potter in 1831 (she died in 1835) and then, in 1843, to Fanny Appleton, who became the mother of his six children; their extremely happy married life ended tragically in 1861 when she was burned to death. He commemorated her shortly before his own death with the sonnet

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is one of the most famous American poets. People love his poetry because they rhyme and sound like songs. Henry was born on February 27, 1807 in Portland, Maine. He was the son of Stephen and Zilpah Longfellow. Henry's father, Stephen, was a lawyer so Henry was born to a rich family. Henry was very bright and he began school at age three. By the time he was six he was the smartest boy in the school. He was very good at spelling and arithmetic. But Henry loved to write and eventually became very good at it. Henry's father wanted him to become a lawyer but after Henry graduated from Boudoin College at the age of 19 he wanted to become a professor . Henry traveled back to Europe to study. In 1831 Henry married Mary Storer Potter. He settled down and started the New England Magazine and became a librarian at Bowdoin College. In 1834 he became a professor at Harvard. He traveled to Europe again to study. When he arrived in Rotterdam he learned that his wife had died. Henry then became a professor at Cambridge instead of Harvard . He moved into a room of the Craige house. The owner of the house was Nathen Appleton. Seven years later he married Francis, Applton's daughter. The Craige House was given to them as a wedding gift. In 1847 Longfellow's poem "Evangeline" was published . Many people say "Evangeline" was his best poem. When "The Courtship of Miles Standish" came out in 1857 it sold 25,000 copies on the first day of publication. In 1861 his second wife Francis died of burns.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in Portland, Maine. His father, Stephen Longfellow, was a Portland lawyer and congressman, and mother, Zilpah, was the daughter of General Peleg Wadsworth and a descendant of John Alden of the Mayflower. Longfellow was early fond of reading - Washington Irving's Sketch-Book was his favorite and at thirteen he wrote his first poem, 'The Battle of Lovell's Pond,' which appeared in Portland Gazette. Among Longfellow's classmates at Bowdoin College was Nathaniel Hawthorne, whom he helped later reviewing warmly his Twice-Told Tales. Before leaving the college, Longfellow had planned to become a writer, and wrote to his father: "The fact is, I most eagerly aspire after future eminence in literature; my whole soul burns most ardently for it, and every earthly thought centers in it..."

Parentage.
H ENRY W ADSWORTH L ONGFELLOW , the most widely read of all the American poets and the one that has the closest hold upon the hearts of the American people, was born in Portland, Maine, February 27, 1807. His father, a graduate of Harvard College, was a leading lawyer in the city. Both parents were of the best English stock and descendants of the early settlers in New England. On his mother's side, the poet traced his ancestry to John Alden, whose peculiar courtship of the Plymouth maid, Priscilla, he was to celebrate in one of his happiest poems. It was from his mother, a lover of nature and of poetry, that Longfellow inherited his romantic taste and his literary ambition.
Youth
School life commenced early for this boy. He began to study at three, and was placed in an academy at six; at seven he was well on his way through the Latin grammar; and was reported by his master "one of the best boys we have in school. . . . His conduct last quarter was very correct and amiable." There were eight children in the home, four brothers and four sisters; Henry was the second child. Books were at hand; and out of doors there was not a little to stir the imagination of a boy in the brisk seaport town which has always been noted for both enterprise and beauty. Its picturesque features were never forgotten. In the descriptive poem

He entered Bowdoin College, where in due time he was graduated in the class with Hawthorne, in 1825. He wrote verses at this time for the United States Literary Gazette, printed at Boston. For a short time after leaving college, he studied law in the office of his father, the Hon. Stephen Longfellow; but soon fell into the mode of life he has since pursued as a scholar, by the appointment to a Professorship of Modern Languages in his college, to accomplish himself for which he travelled abroad in 1826, making the usual tour of the continent, including Spain. He was absent three years; on his return, he lectured at Bowdoin College, as Professor of Modern Languages and Literature, and wrote articles for the North American Review, papers on Sir Philip Sidney, and other topics of polite literature. One of these, an Essay on the Moral and Devotional Poetry of Spain, included his noble translation of the Stanzas of the soldier poet Manrique on the death of his father. He also at this time penned the sketches of travel in Outre Mer
