Duncan Long Duncan Long enjoys all types of writing and enjoys illustrating his material as well. As a writer, he was quick to buy a computer as soon as word processor programs became available. "I got the first Apple IIe on my block," he says with a grin. "And I've been rooting around inside computers ever since a real love hate relationship sometimes. But I'd never go back to those old electric typewriters. I'd rather become a lumberjack." Long is an internationally recognized author with nearly sixty books that have gone into print including ten novels. Ever since I can remember, as a young child, I’ve always been fascinated with and wondered about the relativity of time and space, and thought about how time travel might actually be possible. Electronic Music - MP3 Files By Duncan Long If you want to "cut to the chase," then you can listen to my MP3 and RealAudio music at this link or hear some MP3s of my electronic music here as well. I've been creating synthesized electronic music for several decades now using everything from musique concrète (yes, a fancy word for manipulated taped sounds) to one of the earliest ARP 2600s (in Kansas, at least ;o) as well as an ARP Pro Soloist and (on occasion) an ARP 2500 and an ARP Odyssey, though I generally did most of my work on the 2600. Of course my ARP 2600 was "augmented" by some additional home-brew equipment which I either designed and built or which I assembled (and also often modified) from kits sold by PAiA Electronics, Inc. (which today still sells a variety of synthesizer kits and synthesizers that are worth checking out); I also "breadboarded" circuits together using the then-new technology of the day: Integrated Circuits. (Sidenote: Yes, I am the same Duncan Long who was part of the trio, Concrete Rubber Band . I played electric guitar and synthesizer among other instruments and also did many of the vocals... but that is another story.) I eventually got an MA degree in music composition (something that surprises those who know me via my artwork or writing). This stint of education was very worthwhile in "cleaning my ears" as well as teaching me how to keep music interesting and balanced through a variety of useful forms and techniques. (It also gave me skills that transferred over to my art and writing but that's another story.) This period also gave me access to the huge ARP 2500 located at Kansas State University where Professor Hanley Jackson taught composition with a nice emphasis on electronic music.

KIDNAPPED! BY DUNCAN LONG Anyone may be kidnapped or have a member of their family kidnapped. Unfortunately, most people don't know how to deal with kidnappers or how to survive the ordeal if they themselves are kidnapped or taken hostage. There's a simple procedure for dealing with kidnappers: forget everything you've ever seen in the movies and go to the authorities for help. (They don't do that in the movies or novels because it makes the plot too simple.) In real life, the experts know how to deal with kidnappers and can track them down. The authorities can get the kidnap victim back if it is possible to do so IF you contact them right away at the first sign of trouble. If you're in the US, contact the local police (they'll know where to go from there) and if you're in a foreign country, contact your embassy. Children need to be taught to be cautious and to be a little suspicious of strangers (care must be taken, of course, not to turn your child into a paranoid). The goal of most parents is to get their child to be outgoing and friendly with strangers; this can be a big mistake. Teach your child to be careful. Too many parents leave children alone in the house or in an auto- mobile. While this practice was relatively safe ten years ago, it no longer is.
