An Outline of American Literature
by Kathryn VanSpanckeren
The Rise of Realism: 1860-1914: Jack London (1876-1916)
Index A poor, self-taught worker from California, the naturalist Jack London was catapulted from poverty to fame by his first collection of stories, The Son of the Wolf (1900), set largely in the Klondike region of Alaska and the Canadian Yukon. Other of his best-sellers, including The Call of the Wild (1903) and The Sea-Wolf (1904) made him the highest paid writer in the United States of his time. The autobiographical novel Martin Eden (1909) depicts the inner stresses of the American dream as London experienced them during his meteoric rise from obscure poverty to wealth and fame. Eden, an impoverished but intelligent and hardworking sailor and laborer, is determined to become a writer. Eventually, his writing makes him rich and well-known, but Eden realizes that the woman he loves cares only for his money and fame. His despair over her inability to love causes him to lose faith in human nature. He also suffers from class alienation, for he no longer belongs to the working class, while he rejects the materialistic values of the wealthy whom he worked so hard to join. He sails for the South Pacific and commits suicide by jumping into the sea. Like many of the best novels of its time, Martin Eden is an unsuccess story. It looks ahead to F. Scott Fitzgerald's

http://www.jacklondonsquare.com/history.html
The historic Jack London Square is named for the famous author, who spent his early years in Oakland. London borrowed the entrance fee for college from the proprietor of which still operates today, its floor still slanting because of subsidence after the 1906 earthquake. The cabin where London lived during the Yukon Gold Rush in 1897 was moved to Jack London Square in 1970, and stands near the water today. There are other historic aspects to Jack London Square as well. The Overland House restaurant was built in 1887 at the terminus of the transcontinental railroad. The waterfront is where Captain Thomas Gray, grandfather of the famous dancer Isadora Duncan, began the first ferry service to San Francisco in 1850. Here, too, the normally more sedate Port Commissioner George Pardee, then mayor of Oakland, personally kicked down a fence that the Southern Pacific, which once claimed exclusive ownership of Oakland's waterfront, had erected across Broadway in 1893. Finally, in 1906, the California Supreme Court ended the lengthy disputes by ruling in the city's favor. But it is the tale of Jack London that is the lure for most of the visitors, who come to the Square from around the world each year.

    Jack London's Philosophy and Stories
Life and Philosophy London's Stories Images Presentation Jack London has been one of America's all-time favorite writers and has stood the test of time with his continuing popularity. His writing style, adventure stories and ideas still interest people today. London was influenced by many thinkers and philosophers of his day, in part, because of his situation in life. Poverty was one aspect of his childhood, and his ideas of redistribution of wealth through socialism show though the characters in some of his stories. Survival of animals, and people, in the wilderness supports his ideas of "natural selection" and survival of a race. In this series of lessons, you and your partner will read about the people who influenced London and what their ideas were. Using Internet links, you will find some of the stories that support these ideas. After reading all or part of two stories, you will prepare a summary of the stories and an explanation of how London's ideas are expressed through the actions of the characters.
    Objectives
    • read about several of the philosophers from the late 1800s and early 1900s who influenced Jack London
    • read London's stories that support the predominant ideas he held

London, Jack London, Jack (John Griffith London), , American author, b. San Francisco. The illegitimate son of an astrologer and a Welsh farm girl, he had a poverty-stricken childhood, brought up by his mother and her husband, John London. At 17, Jack London shipped as an able seaman to Japan and the Bering Sea. He was an oyster pirate, a gold-seeker in the first Klondike rush, a newspaper correspondent during the Russo-Japanese War, and in 1914 a war correspondent in Mexico. His stories, romantic adventures with realistic setting and character, began to appear first in the Overland Monthly. In 1900, The Son of the Wolf: Tales of the Far North was published. London's Klondike tales are exciting, vigorous, and brutal. The Call of the Wild (1903), about a tame dog who eventually leads a wolf pack, is one of the best animal stories ever written. Among his other works are The Sea-Wolf White Fang (1905), and Smoke Bellew Martin Eden (1909) and Burning Daylight The People of the Abyss (1903) and The Iron Heel The Cruise of the Snark (1911) is a vivid account of his interrupted voyage around the world in a 50-ft (15.2-m) ketch-rigged yacht, and

    William Blake
