Mark Leyner
Leyner is a very hyperactive mix of a biology thesis, a pop culture dictionary, and a homicidal terrorist weaving through rush hour traffic in an ambulance with an AK-47. There is no other way to describe his writing. It's highly intelligent, and you can tell he spent a lot of time in school, but it is also funnier than hell. His stuff is seemingly random in structure, but comes together in such a coherent way that it makes me wonder how he can plan it so well. One of his more structured books is Et Tu, Babe, which is the story of the rough life of a multibillionanaire, rock star times ten writer who is an American hero, a designer drug abuser, a weightlifter, an artist, and about everything else at once. He tells a tale that goes all over the place and is completely improbable, but hilarious. His books include
  • Et Tu, Babe
  • My Cousin, My Gastroenterologist
  • I Smell Esther Williams
  • Tooth Imprints on a Corn Dog
  • The Tetherballs of Bougainville

The spirit of Dada and Surrealism move through Leyner's writing, as does the sensibility of Burroughs' routines. Is he the Bob Hope of postmodern literature or, as David Foster Wallace has stated, the antichrist?

BY LAURA MILLER Even the most seasoned literary journalist might feel some trepidation when heading out to interview Mark Leyner for the first time. In his second novel, "Et Tu, Babe," he describes himself as "not your average author. I dress like an off-duty cop: leather blazer, silk turtleneck, tight sharply creased slacks, Italian loafers, pinky-ring. I drive a candy-apple red Jaguar with a loaded 9-mm semiautomatic pistol in the glove compartment." In "My Cousin, My Gastroenterologist," his first book, he writes, "I am a terrible god" and claims that, since he took up bodybuilding, small birds die of terror and drop from the trees whenever he goes for a walk in the woods. This turns out to be an exaggeration. Leyner is a pleasant, articulate fellow whose good temper remained untarnished even at the end of a long publicity tour to promote his most recent book

http://www.ac.wwu.edu/~pamhard/238leynerintv.htm
From an interview with Mark Leyner My work evolves mostly by a constant process of accumulating information or language. These come from many sources, including stuff that is purely imagined, but there is no hierarchy in my mind that places imaginary materials above things I find. I’m always writing things down that I come across on the radio or television, so materials are accumulating every day… It’s as if there’s this constant static or white noise around me that I can tap into. I’m a fanatic about having external things going on around me. I love having the television on… I love the feeling of having all that information around me. Having all this access to information and sources of mental stimulation makes me feel very comfortable. This seems to be my nature. I guess I’m a child of the media age. Some people like trees and lakes. Well, sensory overload is my environment. This is what makes me feel serene. I despise the contemptuous attitude so many professors seem to have, for example, about television, rock and roll, and certain kinds of movies. Personally I could never see the difference between Popeye and Thackeray. Part of this attitude is motivated by my hatred of any kind of authority figures, especially academics, professors. I’d say my work presents the world the way people like you and me actually live in it, the way we receive and perceive it… We live from minute to minute, with things constantly changing, kaleidoscopic. Our cultural matrix intensifies the whole natural process of things appearing in front of us and then disappearing… you go eat some strange breakfast cereal and you read the back of the cereal box, while the tv is blaring out some other text and maybe your children are telling you some other kind of story. And all the while this white noise is filtering in from outside your window. The point is that our days are very fragmented, with a million things happening, affecting our perceptions, that have completely arbitrary relationships to one another.

Flogging Tetherballs in Cyberspace
05:06 AM Oct. 21, 1997 PT It makes sense that an author who writes not quite like anyone else would promote his new book in a novel way. While on a traditional national bookstore and media tour to flog his new novel, The Tetherballs of Bougainville, Mark Leyner has taken his tour into cyberspace. When you log on to a publicity site for his book, you'll find not only the usual hyperbolic swill, but, more importantly, you can hear from the author himself as he reads from his novel and adds new entries to his Tour Diary "I'm a late-comer to the Web, but an enthusiastic one," Leyner says.

Today's Top 5 Stories
However, a rigorous touring schedule can have even authors with the best intentions falling down on their commitments. While the first set of diary entries, which begin in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and end in Austin, Texas, recount meetings with attractive tour handlers, a trip to a local fish market, speculations on roadkill, and the joys of room service, the second round of entries - the ones coming after a few days home with his wife and daughter - will probably not be so detailed. "I'm worried about the second installment, because I stopped taking notes," he confessed. "The new installment will be characterized by brevity and fabrication."

An Interview With Mark Leyner
by Alexander Laurence
(c) 1994 I first met Mark Leyner in a hotel lobby, in a strange bar, on Nob Hill, in the city of San Francisco. He was a well-built short man wearing a T-shirt, a jacket, levis, a skull wristband, and held his dark spectacles while he spoke. He explained that his contact lenses had just messed up his eyes, and this was the only way he could see me. We sat down and drank coffee, and settled down on some elegant furniture in a dark corner. Mr. Leyner was in the midst of a twenty city tour in support of his last two books which had been brought out by Vintage. This guy had recently been on David Letterman's show, and The Today Show with Brian Gumbel. Now he was here with me. In just ten years and three books Et Tu, Babe (1992 Harmony/ 1993 Vintage) and My Cousin, My Gastroenterologist (1989 Harmony/1993Vintage); I Smell Esther Williams (1983 Fiction Collective) Leyner has skyrocketed to the kind of fame most authors achieve only posthumously. He has been called the Anti-Christ (by fellow writer David Foster Wallace), The Writer For The MTV Generation, Avant Pop Master, and Cult Writer For The 90s. Sipping coffee in the lobby of the Stanford Court Hotel during his recent tour for the paperback edition of Et Tu, Babe, Leyner expanded on his life as a superstar of the written word.
