That Wyndham Lewis posed a "Jewish Question" is well-known, and a good book on his attitudes to Jews would be a good book all round, not only contributing to Lewis studies but helping us to learn more about human behaviour from his particular example. David Ayers' Wyndham Lewis and Western Man , however, is poorly researched, employs cumbersome psychoanalytic concepts with a naivete that is astonishing, and is plagued with serious errors. There is no likelihood that it will be widely influential, though doubtless the waters around Lewis, already turbid with fanaticism, will be made yet muddier, as if that mattered. But because of its inadequacies it has considerable interest as a representative of that intellectual carelessness, and a tendency to sensationalism, which afflicts those who have, as they think, strong moral cases. A case of this kind requires impeccable scholarship in all the fields in which it moves, Lewis, history, psychology and psychoanalysis, before its claims to attention become credible. Ayers is deficient in all of them, and also gives evidence everywhere of what one could charitably call over excitement. One example will be enough. After an extended comparison of Lewis's discussion of Georges Sorel in

Advertising
T he art of advertisement, after the American manner, has introduced into all our life such a lavish use of superlatives, that no standard of value whatever is intact.
Equality
T he intelligence suffers today automatically in consequence of the attack on all authority, advantage, or privilege. These things are not done away with, it is needless to say, but numerous scapegoats are made of the less politically powerful, to satisfy the egalitarian rage awakened.
Ideas
T he ideas of a time are like the clothes of a season: they are as arbitrary, as much imposed by some superior will which is seldom explicit. They are utilitarian and political, the instruments of smooth-running government.

HEMINGWAY'S PARIS:
WRITERS and BOOKS:
Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957)
Born on a yacht off Nova Scotia, Lewis's family moved to England when he was a child and he was educated in England and then Paris. With Ezra Pound , Lewis founded and edited the short-lived (1914-15) journal Blast: The Review of the Great English Vortex He wrote several novels, and several critical works as well, but Lewis's satirical attacks on many of his contemporaries, as well as his 1930 book Hitler , alienated him from most of the literay world of the 1930s. In the late 1930s he published several retractions of his earlier work. For a website devoted to Lewis, including images, click here Back to On-line Seminar

The art of advertisement, after the American manner, has introduced into all our life such a lavish use of superlatives, that no standard of value whatever is intact. I feel most at home in the United States, not because it is intrinsically a more interesting country, but because no one really belongs there any more than I do. We are all there together in its wholly excellent vacuum. A hundred things are done today in the divine name of Youth, that if they showed their true colors would be seen by rights to belong rather to old age. If the world would only build temples to Machinery in the abstract then everything would be perfect. The painter and sculptor would have plenty to do, and could, in complete peace and suitably honoured

THE ART OF BEING RULED
by Wyndham Lewis
In The Art of Being Ruled , first published in 1926, Wyndham Lewis attempted to propose a viable alternative to the Bloomsbury liberalism and "bourgeois" democracy he so abhorred. It was a risky undertaking. His later reputation as a right wing thinker is founded largely on a superficial reading of this provocative book. In truth, as it reveals, his politics are not so simplistic or easy to pin down. To contemporary readers one thing will be clear: Lewis was a frustrated idealist, with a brilliant ability to identify the errors and evils of the modern world. As a social critic, intellectual, artist, and self-styled "independent observer," Lewis was appalled by the post-war European scene. "We are in the midst of a frenzied evolutionary war of the machines," he warns in The Art of Being Ruled . A prophetic aspect of this book is his analysis of the tendency of machines to bring destruction. With the "unruffled optimism" and "humanitarianism" of liberal England rendered obsolete in a Brave New Mechanical Age, "the Public," as Lewis saw it, had been reduced to a herd of "animals in a vast Zoo," near-comatose "automata" easily exploited by capitalist cartels and controlled by the popular press. "Democracy" thus became a mere tool of big business, manipulated for profit into world wars. Far preferable to Lewis was the (sadly impossible) idea of authoritative leaders who would "assume responsibility for the ignorant millions." Replacing the exploitation of "the weaknesses of the Many" with "the exploitation of the intelligence of the Few" proved as difficult in practical terms in Lewis' day as in our own. However, his real subject here, the plight of the creative thinker and of the artist in a mass-produced, robot-standardized, anti-intellectual culture, remains as significant and pertinent as ever.

Percy Wyndham Lewis
Percy Wyndham Lewis was a novelist, playwright, painter, poet, satirist and critic. He was born in 1882 in Amehurst, Nova Scotia. Although his father was American, his English mother was mainly responsible for his upbringing. He was educated at Rugby School and at the Slade School of Art from 1898 until 1901. After art college, he travelled across Europe and finally settled in Paris for a few years, returning to England in 1908 where he began publishing plays, short stories and novels. In 1914, heavily influenced by the ideas and methods of Marinetti and Futurism as well as their art (see Futurist Figure ), Wyndham Lewis, in association with the poet Ezra Pound, founded the literary and artistic movement that Pound christened Vorticism. Sometimes called the London branch of the Cubo-Futurists, Vorticism was actually British art's independent alternative to Cubism and Futurism. It was, in fact, the first British modern art movement and the only British avant-garde movement to make an original contribution to European Modernism. The group included Charles Nevinson, William Roberts, Alvin Langdon Coburn and the French sculptor Henri Gaudier-Brzeska.

Although the Vorticists openly criticised the Italian Futurists for their enthusiastic embrace of modernity, which they deemed credulous, and their emphasis on blurred speed and motion there were strong similarities and common influences and directions. The movement maintained an aggressive challenge to the obsolete Victorian values that were seen to be stifling modern artistic expression.

Wyndham Lewis and the Art of Modern War
Edited by David Peters Corbett
In stock This collection is the first specialised study since Frederic Jameson’s influential 1979 book Fables of Aggression: Wyndham Lewis, the Modernist as Fascist to deal with the important question of Lewis as a mass of ‘unbound impulses released from the rationalising censorship of a respectable consciousness’, and arguing for a more nuanced and historically aware view of Lewis and his work. The eight contributors consider Lewis’s career from its inception to his final novels within a major focus on the First World War and the inter-war period. Their essays examine Lewis’s First World War art, his post-war politics and aesthetics, the new turn his painting and thought took in the 1930s, and the connections between modernism, war, and aggression. Overall, the collection offers a reassessment of the conventional view of Lewis as the uncontrolled aggressor of British modernism.

Wyndham Lewis Collection The work of this major British writer and painter is richly represented in the Poetry/Rare Books Collection. From the first portfolio of black and white and colored drawings published in 1913 as Timon of Athens, and the 1917 edition of The Ideal Giant, through the more controversial volumes of Paleface Men Without Art (1934), and The Hitler Cult and How It Will End (1939), to the late volumes, Self Condemned (1954) and The Human Age (1955), the collection maintains a full run of first and bibliographically important editions. Since Lewis was also an editor of considerable enthusiasm, the two issues of Blast (1914-1915)Lewis' own copies, in factthe two issues of The Tyro the three issues of The Enemy (1927-1929), and the only Enemy Pamphlet to appear, Satire and Fiction (1930), are also present. A self-portrait hangs in the reading room, along with Lewis' portrait of Samuel P. Capen, Chancellor of the University of Buffalo, while forty drawings and sketches in pencil and ink are among the manuscripts. The manuscripts are of great importance, not only for what they show about the creative process in Lewis' art, but also for what they are able to reveal about the meanings of the books themselves.
