He had one older brother, Warren, who was three years his senior. When CS Lewis (or 'Jack', as he was called) was nine years old his mother died of cancer, and soon after her death, in 1908, he was sent to join his brother at Wynyard Boarding School. Lewis was only there for a year before returning to Northern Ireland where he attended Campbell College, Belfast. A few years later he travelled back to England and spent his last school years at Malvern College in Worcestershire and with private tutor, Mr Kirkpatrick. Jack then started at University College, Oxford, but his studies were interrupted by World War I (he served with the Somerset Light Infantry). In 1919 he returned to Oxford, gained a first and, in 1925, was elected Fellow of English Language and Literature at Magdalen College. In 1954 he became Professor of Mediaeval and Renaissance Literature at Cambridge. Two years later he married Joy Davidman Gresham, an American poet and admirer of Lewis. Tragically soon after the marriage Joy was diagnosed as having cancer and she died in 1960. For many years CS Lewis was an atheist, and described his conversion to Christianity in 'Surprised By Joy'. 'In the Trinity term of 1929 I gave in, and admitted that God was God... perhaps the most dejected and reluctant convert in all England.' It was this experience that helped him to understand not only apathy but active unwillingness to accept religion, and, as a Christian writer, gifted with an exceptionally brilliant and logical mind and a lucid, lively style, he was without peer. 'The Problem of Pain', 'The Screwtape Letters', 'Mere Christianity', 'The Four Loves' and the posthumous 'Prayer: Letters to Malcolm' are only a few of his best-selling works.

Lewis Author and Critic Lewis was born in Dundela Avenue, Strandtown, Belfast and baptised in St Mark's, Dundela, by his grandfather, Thomas Hamilton, who was rector there. In 1905 the family moved to "Little Lea" on the Circular Road, which his father had built; it is the location of the wardrobe which plays such an important role in his children's stories, The Chronicles of Narnia. The house however is privately owned and not accessible to the public. Lewis was educated in England, at Malvern College and University College, Oxford, his education being interrupted by military service during the First World War when he was wounded at the battle of Arras. On his return to university he graduated brilliantly and became Fellow and Tutor at Magdalen College (he later moved to Cambridge as Professor of Medieval and Renaissance Literature). Perhaps his best-known academic book is The Allegory of Love (about medieval literature), but he reached a wider audience through works of Christian apology like The Screwtape Papers and radio broadcasts on the same subject. The Narnia stories, originally composed for World War Two evacuees, brought him great success - although his friend J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Lord Of The Rings, did not like them! In his later years he married the American Joy Gresham, who in 1960 died of cancer; his autobiography Surprised By Joy is partly inspired by her. The play and film Shadowlands tell a somewhat romanticised version of their story. Lewis died in 1963 and is buried at Holy Trinity Church, Haddington, Oxford.
