T HE Q UALITY OF M ERCY:
P HILIP L EVINE'S T HE M ERCY
Early in his career, Levine's poetry was often characterized
as very angry, and that anger provided much of the energy
fueling many of his best poems. But that rage evident
at an earlier age and in a large share of his poetry, although
not gone altogether, has given way to some extent in recent years, especially in his three latest collections, to an even more thoughtful and reflective poetry exhibiting an even greater generosity of spirit.
F or a number of years now, Philip Levine has held a secure position among the handful of American poets who have written substantial bodies of distinctive and influential poetry during the closing decades of the twentieth century. Since the 1963 publication of his first book, On the Edge , Levine has produced a steady accumulation of powerful poems whose thematic and stylistic characteristics are as identifiable and revealing as the "auras of smoke and grease" or the "eyes swollen with sleeplessness" that mark those urban blue-collar workers in "Salt and Oil"—one of the remarkable poems from his latest collection

After a succession of industrial jobs he left the city for good and lived in various parts of the country before settling in Fresno, California. The Names of the Lost won the Lenore Marshall Award for the best book of poetry published by an American in 1976. Three of his books have been nominated for the National Book Critics Circle Award, and two of them, Ashes and 7 Years from Somewhere , have received it. Ashes also received the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize "for distinguished poetic achievements," awarded by Poetry magazine and The American Council for the Arts. What Work Is received the National Book Award in poetry for 1991. The Simple Truth won the Pulitzer Prize in poetry for 1995. (Photograph of Philip Levine by Frances Levine)
About The Simple Truth
The Simple Truth is written in a voice that moves between elegy and prayer. It contains thirty-three poems whose aim is to weave a complex tapestry of myth, history (both public and private), family, memory, and invention in a search for truths so basic and universal they escape us all. "I am a longtime admirer of Philip Levine's poetry, but until now thought he would never surpass

Philip Levine, MD
An internationally renowned researcher in the field of immunohematology, and a member of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists for 45 years, Philip Levine, MD, is best known for his discovery of the human Rh antigen blood factors. ASCP bestowed its prestigious Ward Burdick Award, the Society's highest honor, on Dr. Levine and his colleague Alexander Wiener, MD, in 1946, for their joint work on the Rh blood factors. Dr. Levine was an active ASCP member from 1942 when he joined the Society and served on the Council of Immunohematology and the Blood Bank Committee in the '50s and '60s. In 1969, ASCP established the Outstanding Research Award Honoring Philip Levine to recognize Dr. Levine for his many contributions to clinical medicine. It is presented annually to researchers who have made acclaimed contributions to molecular pathology, immunohematology and immunopathology through their valuable activities in the basic sciences. Born August 10, 1900, in a small village of what was then Polish Russia, Dr. Levine's family immigrated to the US to escape anti-semitism and fearful pogroms. Philip was only eight years old when he arrived and his family settled in Brooklyn, New York, taking the name Levine. His uncle William worked for a man named Levine, adopted the name, as other relatives immigrated, they, too, became Levines.

70. Jobbed : Philip Levine
We shook hands, and he walked out of my life. Less than a week later, the missingbearings turned up in the trunk of the boss's car. philip levine.

A great deal of what we did together involved the movement of large and often very heavy wooden crates that Andy and another employee, Eugene Watkins, created out of scrap wood. The shop had no forklift, and this was before trucks were equipped with hydraulic lifts on the tail, so I had to learn how to lift and carry in tandem with a man much stronger than I. I had to learn to balance a crate on one knee and turn so that I could face forward if were going upstairs; Andy, bearing the brunt of the weight, could thus propel the crate and me together. When we descended he would go first, the crate
resting on his broad back as I scampered behind as fast as I was able. So precise and careful was he that not once during the long summer did I mash a finger or bruise an elbow. Every few days he would cheer me up by assuring me I was growing stronger and more adept, and after a few months passed it was clear even to me that he was right.

http://www.doubletakemagazine.org/edu/teachersguide/activities/id/levine/
Hungry and cold, I stood in a doorway
on Delancey Street in 1946
as the rain came down. The worst part is this
is not from a bad movie. I'd read Dos Passos'
USA and thought, "Before the night ends
my life will change." A stranger would stop
to ask for my help, a single stranger
more needy than I, if such a woman
were possible. I still had cigarettes,
damp matches, and an inaccurate map
of Manhattan in my head, and the change from the one $20 traveler's check I'd cashed in a dairy restaurant where the amazed owner actually proclaimed to the busy heads, "They got Jews in Detroit!" You can forgive the night. No one else was dumb enough to be out. Sure, it was Easter. Was I expecting crocus and lilac to burst from the pavement and sweeten the air the way they did in Michigan once upon a time? This wouldn't be so bad if you were only young once. Once would be fine. You stand out in the rain once and get wet expecting to enter fiction. You huddle under the Williamsburg Bridge posing for Life. You trek to the Owl Hotel to lie awake in a room the size of a cat box and smell the dawn as it leaks under the shade with the damp welcome you deserve. Just the once

CONVERSATION WITH PHILIP LEVINE:
JUNE 20, 1998
By Alan Fox
FOX: What factor has been most influential on your writing?
FOX: Do you regard your work as political in any way?
FOX: Some readers find a significant difference between academic poetry as compared with the poetry of the streets. Do you see a distinction?
I read a long poem by someone I won't name; it since got published in a book. It was a poem in several parts. For example, one part was about a bad romance with a woman who was a heroin addict. Another part was about a certain wandering minstrel type, a guitarist who sang in cafes and was out to meet a woman of means; these are young people. And there were writers and painters and people like that. And the guy gave me the poem and asked me what I thought of it. And I said, "I'd like to see a plumber in here, I really would. I'd love to see a plumber, or maybe an out-of-work carpenter, somebody sitting on his back porch and thinking, 'Oh shit, I deserve better than this.'" It seemed to me that all of the characters were literary cliches or cinematic cliches.

An Open Letter to AFAN* and the Astrology Community
from Philip Levine
*AFAN is the Association for Astrological Networking
For several years now
I have been writing and speaking on a subject for which I have deep and strong feelings. I feel somewhat qualified to do so because I love astrology, have practiced for over 20 years, and have extensive experience as a psychotherapist. This latter experience (as well as my own childhood, marriage, group involvements) has helped educate me with regard to so-called dysfunctional dynamics like addictions, co-dependency, shadow, projections, and cult mentality.
In a general cultural and evolutionary sense, unless humanity faces, owns and integrates its collective and individual shadow, there is no hope for saving the planet from our own self-generated destructive program. All around us we see degradation of the environment, loss of young people to senseless violence and meaninglessness, and increasing abuse and violence, particularly towards children. I could go on, but enough of that sermon.
What do I really want? I have been trying with remarkably little response for several years to ask the astrological community to engage in a little self-examination. We as a group have the same tendencies as any other group we project our shadow onto others, we scapegoat, we deny responsibility for our weaknesses and shortcomings. As helping professionals, we have a greater responsibility to be honest about ourselves, our activities, and our motives. This is of course something we would rather avoid, because it is painful to diminish our cherished ego-ideal and our picture of ourselves as dedicated servers.
