More Shameless Scribblers
The site called A Celebration of Women Writers lists many female authors, some with a biography, some even with copies of their work on line. To add to the project, here are several brief biographies. The main source is the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica - an astounding resource for pre-WWI information. Where possible, I will add from other references I have lying about the house. Shameless Scribblers comes from Alexander Pope's tirade against Eliza Haywood , who wrote thinly disguised novels of life among the rich and decadent. Also see the following pages:

Department of Cultural Studies EN2016 - AMERICAN LITERATURE TO 1900
Single Module Tutor
Will Kaufman Aims and Objectives To engage with the relationship between concepts of American identity in writing and American literary texts before the twentieth century. To foster an understanding of the political, historical and cultural contexts from which these texts emerged. To explore the development of particular genres in American literary history. To interrogate the reception of these American texts, both in their time and subsequently. Syllabus This module explores significant examples of American fiction, narrative and poetry from the establishment of the United States to the end of the nineteenth century. It offers the study of canonical texts by such writers as Herman Melville, Emily Dickinson, Mark Twain, Walt Whitman and Stephen Crane, and non-canonical texts by such figures as Charlotte Lennox, Harriet Beecher Stowe and Frederick Douglass. It explores such issues as American identity, gender, ethnicity, regionalism and naturalism against the historical backdrop of the colonial period, slavery, the 'American Renaissance', the Civil War and industrialisation. Problems of literary form and narrative are also considered, as are questions concerning the American literary canon and critical responses to it.

MARYSA DEMOOR
Sir Charles Wentworth Dilke married Emilia Strong in October 1885, a year after the death of her previous husband, Mark Pattison, and a few months after Dilke himself had been named as co-respondent in the Crawford vs. Crawford trial. The divorce case signalled the end of an influential political career; his marriage marked the beginning of a rewarding private life. To all appearances the union was perfectly happy with the partners sharing numerous pursuits and activities. This paper focuses on one of those shared concerns, the weekly journal the

Part 2: Romantic friendships and lesbian relationships in literature and history
20 reels of 35mm silver-halide positive microfilm plus guide By opening up a subject that has remained largely inaccessible, this series makes available many writings that have been restricted to specialist libraries and obscure archives. Many of these texts have been the subject of taboo, censorship, prejudice and condemnation and have been relegated to the periphery. Part 1 includes texts chosen from the resources of the Library of the Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine in London, and the Bodleian Library, Oxford, spanning from the mid seventeenth century to the early twentieth century. These provide a general survey of the literature of sexuality. Part 2 of Sex and Sexuality examines relationships between women, from the classical period to the beginning of the twentieth century. These range from platonic love through to explicit sexual relations. Where the eighteenth century notion of Romantic Friendship fits into this continuum is a matter for debate. The reader often has to interpret signs and conventions to provide an interpretation of what was going on. This is also true of classical literature where varying translations of works by Ovid, Juvenal and Sappho clearly lead to different interpretations of the nature of sexuality in the ancient world. For Juvenal we include variant translations by Stapylton (1647), Dryden (1693) and Gifford (1802). For Sappho we include
