Informace o autorovi

VITRIFAX:
The writing of Stanislaw Lem - Introduction, links, and commentary By Matt McIrvin
Introduction
The Polish author Stanislaw Lem (b. 1921) is my favorite author of fiction. (Other people have written books I admire as much as or more than any of Lem's, but, for some reason, I enjoy Lem's work most consistently Lem primarily writes science fiction, but that doesn't convey the variety of styles and forms that he's tackled. He's written straightforward adventure tales, moody extraterrestrial travelogues, satirical fables, mystery novels, psychological thrillers, hilarious pseudo-folktales set in a world populated by robots, learned reviews of nonexistent scientific monographs, critiques of imaginary artwork, lectures given by fictional supercomputers, tall tales, and novels that veer from one of the above forms to another without apparent warning. He's one of the most unapologetically cerebral writers on the planet, and has a dry sense of humor that leavens an often deeply pessimistic sensibility. Stanislaw Lem is one of the few SF writers in a language other than English whose work is widely available (in translation) in the United States. His American fans sometimes complain that he's underappreciated here, but, really, compared to everyone else in the non-Anglophone world, and especially the former Soviet bloc, he's quite a celebrity here. Even Arkady and Boris Strugatsky's novels are rarely seen on bookstore shelves, and you usually

By Nathan M. Powers "If [Stanislaw Lem] isn't considered for a Nobel Prize by the end of the century, it will be because someone told the judges that he writes science fiction," predicted a Philadelphia Inquirer critic in 1983. Lem is arguably the greatest living science fiction writer, and even one of the most important European authors of his generation; yet he commands little critical attention, and has failed to reach discerning American science fiction readers who ought, one would think, to be most interested in him. The reasons for this may be sought, paradoxically, in the high demands he makes of his own work: Lem is a true original, but at the price of being marginal. The Time of Cruel Miracles Stanislaw Lem was born in 1921 in Lvov, Poland, to a family of the professional class; both his father and uncle were doctors. As a young man Lem planned to become a doctor himself, enrolling at the Lvov Medical Institute. When the Institute closed due to the war in 1941, he became a mechanic and welder for a German corporation. During the lean war years Lem, who was himself of Jewish ancestry, escaped a number of close calls as Jewish acquaintances disappeared around him. On at least one occasion, he was nearly arrested sneaking out supplies from his workplace for the Polish Resistance.
After the war Lem's life changed greatly. He moved with his family to Cracow in 1946, and completed his medical studies there in 1948. He did not, however, take a diploma, because persons with medical degrees were at the time automatically conscripted into the army. Instead in 1947 he accepted a position as a research assistant at Jagellonian University in Cracow, reading articles in a wide range of scientific fields for review in the journal

His Cyberiad Tales of Pirx the Pilot Futurological Congress Chain of Chance Solaris (classically filmed by Andrei Tarkovsky), and many more stand high in the ranks of the most entertaining and intellectually stimulating sf. Lem is also known, more in Europe than in the U.S., for his criticism, philosophy, and futurology. In a slim but fascinating book, Swirski collects two insightful interviews with Lem and Lem's retrospective essay on his 1960s futurological work. Lem, now an elder statesman of both futurology and futuristic fiction, discourses lucidly as well as learnedly on his own career, his literary fields, the differences between European and American intellectuality, and even his own sf concept of the phantomat, which is now being realized as virtual reality. Lem vibrantly verifies that he is one man of letters able to comment very well on his own place in the sun. His admirers should consider this book essential reading. Lem has written a broad range of works, from disturbingly serions (Solaris) to slapstick (Tales of Pirx the Pilot). He's used some odd forms (reviews of non-existant books). He has serious criticisms of western SF, saying it's too often used for action/adventure instead of serious imaginative works. In a Lem books, aliens are REALLY alien (incomprehensible). Powers' fine Scriptorium ... page on Lem. Introduction During the Soviet era, Polish writer Stanislaw Lem was the most celebrated SF author in the Communist world. Although he read Western SF when he was young, he soon found it shallow and turned for inspiration to the long tradition of Eastern European philosophical fantasy. Western readers not familiar with this tradition often misread his works, expecting more action-oriented, technophilic fiction. Solaris comes closer to being a traditional SF novel than most of his works, but its main thrust is still philosophical. There is a deep strain of irony which runs through this work, for all its occasionally grim moments. The great Russian experimental director Andrei Tarkovsky made an important film based on the novel which is considerably more confusing that the book. Stanislaw Lem is one of the world's most widely read science fiction writers. His books, all originally published in Polish, have appeared in 30 languages and sold more than 12 million copies. Lem is not a typical science fiction writer, as many unappreciative sci-fi fans will tell you; he is writer addressing profound philosophical issues and telling fantastic tales often compared with Italo Calvino and Jorge Luis Borges. Lem is best known to English readers for his 1961 novel Solaris (English translation 1970), on which Russian film director Andrei Tarkovsky based his epic 1971 film, and for his 1967 collection of robot fables The Cyberiad (English translation 1974). Many find his work too strange and somewhat difficult. It can be, yet Lem is anything but dull. Lem Net Lem Art

an interview with Stanislaw Lem
by Wojciech Orlinski of "Wiadomosci Kulturalne" Q: Your books display not only your outstanding knowledge and imagination, but also a great sense of humour. It's amazing, how rarely they are analyzed from this point of view... Lem: I was using humour for various reasons. First, some topics were unsuitable for serious treatment, such as questions of genetics. All those sketches of weird skeletons I drew in the "Star Diaries" were intended to make this subject less horrible. When I was writing that, there were no punks, nobody had a Mohawk haircut, young men did not paint their faces. Nevertheless I had such a feeling, that when mankind will attain control over human genetics, wild things of that kind will happen. Human irresponsibility will lead us to crazy situations. In order to present those crazy situations, I had to create a pattern of levity. On the other hand, most of my works were written under communism and I had to acknowledge the existence of censorship. For example, when I wrote a story of the first frozen person in "Edukacja Cyfrania" - about an orchestra, whose members are being eaten alive one by one by a cruel Goryllium, but everybody pretends not to notice anything - I had to cover it in a disguise of inseriousness, and add a story of the second frozen person, which had no political hidden meanings. That made it easier to publish the story. I had to use such tricks many times. There are thus two kinds of my humour: the first is a camouflage painting, the second are some microrevenges, that the author can take on the surrounding reality. I have to add something which I cannot understand. Here you can see a bookshelf with my Japanese translations. The Japanese could never understand my humour. Nothing is funny in my books for them. The "Star Diaries" were published in Japan, but without such a success, as the books written absolutely seriously. This is a culture completely alien to us.

Stanislaw Lem Science Fiction Author There are six million copies of Lem's novels, short stories and plays in print throughout East Europe and the Soviet Union. Over two dozen of his works have been translated into English. Among the best known are Solaris (1970; the Soviets made a major film from this novel), The Cyberiad (1974; perhaps his best work), The Futurological Congress (1974), and The Star Diaries (1976). Trained to be a physician, and "brought up with the scientific outlook" by his father who was also a physician, he subsequently "spent many hours over coffee arguing about God" with his friend Karol Wojtlya who taught theology in Krackow and who is now better known as Pope John-Paul II. In an interview, Lem indicated his thinking on religion: "for moral reasons I am an atheist for moral reasons. I am of the opinion that you would recognize a creator by his creation, and the world appears to me to be put together in such a painful way that I prefer to believe that it was not created by anyone than to think that somebody created this intentionally."
