Murray Leinster
Unternehmen Zeittunnel

A Logic Named Joe
by Murray Leinster Review by
Robert Wilfred Franson Astounding Science Fiction
March 1946, pages 139-154 March 2001
I've read several times that the personal computer is an idea that science fiction did not predict. I wasn't quite in agreement with this, but hadn't taken time to research otherwise. The other day, my friend Bob Cooper reminded me of a science fiction short-story from 1946, "A Logic Named Joe", which I then reread. Note that this story appeared when computers were so rare they were individually-named projects at universities; and when television was still several years short of being found in more than a very few homes. Here's how "A Logic Named Joe" breezily starts: It was on the third day of August that Joe came off the assembly line, and on the fifth Laurine came into town, and that afternoon I saved civilization. That's what I figure anyhow. ... Some of Leinster's ideas, seamlessly introduced into this smooth little story: Desktop:
  • Keyboards and vision screens
  • Local logic processing
  • Ordinary-language interface (not programming)
  • Interactive customizable software
Internet:
  • Internet access from your desktop
  • Country-wide networked databases (including video) on all topics
  • Networked accounting software
  • Television shows on desktop computers
  • Real-time weather forecasts, stock quotes, etc.

I'm not sure there can be any such thing as "the essential Murray Leinster" — the man wrote far too much science fiction for that, entertaining readers across half a century of writing beginning in 1919, and occasionally sparking ideas that broadened into new realms of speculation, widening the way we think about time or interstellar travel. Leinster wrote many stories for the slick-paper magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post, generally under his real name, Will F. Jenkins. First Contacts: The Essential Murray Leinster includes two dozen stories from 1934-1964: half from Astounding Science Fiction, two previously unpublished, two from the slick magazines, and the rest from other science fiction magazines. First Contacts takes its title from Leinster's famous 1945 novelet "First Contact", on the initial encounter between humans and an alien race, and more or less gathers stories on this theme. Many consider "First Contact" to be the story that defined "first contact" as a problem in the sense of a chess problem with a mostly-empty board and just a few pieces in tense juxtaposition. In this story, the situation is symmetric: a Terrestrial starship on a scientific exploration to the Crab Nebula meets an alien starship on a similar mission, with an equivalent level of technology. Should they

"Mathematics is invoked several times to formalize `what goes round, comes around' as if it were a law of nature. 100% hokey. The only thing worse than the bad math is the bad science. "Of separate interest is the story's (pre-1948) reference to `bit of information'. Leinster of course only meant `bit' as in "small amount", but it reads entirely modernly. "The protagonist is a frustrated mathematician, whose genius (which Leinster makes some attempt to convey) is not recognized by his teachers and peers. So when reality goes blooey, and the mathematician is the only person to realize what is going on, he leaps at the opportunity to become a somebody in an alternative reality. At one point, when questioned why he is such a megalomaniac, he says rather matter of factly that it beats being a Jerkwater U math professor." (Contributed by William E. Emba.) OPERATION ESPACE Par Murray Leinster

L'AUTRE COTE DU MONDE Par Murray Leinster

Chapter 1
THE SIGNALS from space began a little after midnight, local time, an a Friday. They were first picked up in the South Pacific, just westward of the International Date Line. A satellite-watching station on an island named Kalua was the first to receive them, though nobody heard the first four or five minutes. But it is certain that the very first message was picked up and recorded by the monitor instruments. The satellite-tracking unit on Kalua was practically a duplicate of all its fellows. There was the station itself with a vertical antenna outside pointing at the stars. There were various lateral antennae held two feet aboveground by concrete posts. In the instrument room in the building a light burned over a desk, three or four monitor lights glowed dimly to indicate that the self-recording instruments were properly operating, and there was a multiple-channel tape recorder built into the wall. Its twin tape reels turned sedately, winding a brown plastic ribbon from one to the other at a moderate pace. The staff man on duty had gone to the installation's kitchen for a cup of coffee. No sound originated in the room, unless one counted the fluttering of a piece of weighted-down paper on the desk. Outside, palm trees whispered and rustled their long fronds in the southeast trade wind under a sky full of glittering stars. Beyond, there was the dull booming of surf upon the barrier reef of the island. But the instruments made no sound. Only the tape reels moved.

This note does not contain major spoilers for the book. Webscription Another Webscriptions ebook. I've read most of the stories before at least, if not this exact collection of them. I really like the idea of the Med Service. Completely voluntary, no power to enforce, but so respected that they control medicine pretty well. I'm not sure I *believe* it, though; these days I'm too cynical about what people will believe. Of course, Med Ship Aesclipus Twenty encounters rather more than its share of extreme problems, but that's just par for the course in fiction. And it's not like he's hitting problems at the Kimball Kinnison level or anything. I've generally liked medical SF; James White, of course, and also Alan E. Nourse's Star Surgeon . (Did you know that he was a doctor? And that his last name is pronounced "nurse"?) The stories definitely have inconsistencies. The big one is how the "landing grid" (neat idea) is the only way for ships to get on and off planets, hence war is impossible except the Med Ship lands on rockets when necessary, and can get refueled anywhere it goes.
