"La Cenerentola" by Gwyneth Jones Ian Stewart is a well-known math popularizer, and the author of a number of engaging stories, mostly in Analog , about a decade ago. While enjoying some of his work, I've always had difficulty with his prose: reading his stories is, frankly, a chore. "Code of the Skydiver", the first SF I've seen from him in a while, in collaboration with Jack Cohen , displays both Stewart's faults (that prose), and some of his occasional virtues (fairly cool ideas, sound science). However, despite the good points, including an elaborate setup for life on Jupiter, and a kind of scary idea as to what that life might see fit to do with the asteroids and comets that occasionally hit the great planet, the drawbacks overwhelm this story. The characters are utterly unsympathetic, mainly because they are aliens, and in no way do the authors manage to engage human interest. The prose, as said, is awful: I could hardly make my way through the story. And the story itself is slow and hard to follow. The awful revelations are told, not shown. This story consists of some OK ideas that never became a real story.

Deputy Assistant Attorney General Mary Lee Warren's
Testimony to the Subcommittee on
Crime of the House Judiciary Committee
Thank you, Mr. Chairman and members of the Subcommittee, for the opportunity to address you on the very important topics of the nature and extent of and the efforts law enforcement is taking to identify, target, and prosecute the perpetrators of these crimes and to seize and forfeit their assets and instrumentalities.domestic and international drug proceeds and other money laundering A. Targeting the Money That illicit proceeds generated from criminal activity serve as the rationale of any "for profit" criminal activity is an often repeated truism. An equally accurate, though rarely stated fact is that, at least where organized criminal activity generates its profits in the form of cash, the volume of this illicit cash and the need of the enterprise to enter it into the legitimate financial system are vulnerabilities for that criminal enterprise, and could provide law enforcement with perhaps its best opportunity to target those illicit proceeds. To put the drug trafficker's cash burden into clearest perspective, I am providing a chart that compares the weight of illicit drugs that must be sold to generate a specified sum of money (for example, $1 million), with the weight of the currency that the criminal now must seek to return to his use. The numbers are startling.

Robert Edward Lee
The strong, healthy boy born to "Light Horse Harry" and Ann Carter Lee on January 19, 1807 was the last Lee born at Stratford to survive to maturity. Though he spent fewer than four years there, his later boyhood visits left an impression that he carried throughout his life. As sometimes happens in distinguished families, one member seems to fall heir to the best qualities of the previous generations and none of the flaws. So it was with Robert Edward Lee. From both the Carters and the Lees he inherited a handsome countenance. From his father came rare physical strength and endurance. The sense of duty that Harry had learned from George Washington was vividly imparted to his son Robert. Even "Light Horse Harry's" difficulties with money seemed to have produced positive responses in Robert, who throughout his life was meticulous and prudent in all finacial matters. Ann Carter Lee's gentleness was inherited by Robert, and his loving care of his ailing mother was the mainstay of her life. With his father and elder brothers away, and his mother and sisters in failing health, Robert had become, by age 12, head of the household. On cold afternoons, when his mother was well enough, young Robert would stuff paper in the cracks of the carriage to block the wind and take her driving. Years later, when he left for West Point, Ann Lee wrote to a cousin, "How I will get on without Robert? He is both a son and daughter to me." Robert Lee's choice of a military career was dictated by financial necessity. There was no money left to send him to Harvard, where his older brother Charles Carter studied. Such circumstances led him to an appointment to West Point Military Academy. Robert, who led the Cadet Corps in 1829, graduated second in his class. In four years he received not a single demerit, and he became one of the most popular cadets in his class. When he returned as the Academy's superintendent years later, he won the same affectionate respect from the cadets for his compassion, sense of fairness and strong moral leadership.

Settle
Photo taken from The Iron Mountain Review By Brian O. Hogbin Although Mary Lee Settle was born in Charleston, West Virginia on July 29, 1918, her parents moved constantly. Regardless of her shifting locations, the majority of Settle's childhood was developed in the southern Appalachians. Like William Faulkner, Mary Lee Settle is distinguished by her creation of a world both hypothetical and realistic. Just as Faulkner transformed Oxford into Jefferson, Settle transforms Charleston, West Virginia into Canona, the setting for nine of her twelve novels. While her base remains in Appalachia, the themes she uses transcend to encompass four centuries and four different continents. When Settle was one year of age her family moved to Harlan County, Kentucky, where her father owned a coal mine. The family then traveled to Pineville, Kentucky for a short while before moving to Orlando, Florida, where her father, a civil engineer by training, found work during the Florida Boom. The family returned to its West Virginia roots when Settle was ten, where they lived with her grandmother in Cedar Grove. It was here she recalls that as she rode the school bus on winter mornings she saw "the miners going to work in the dark with their carbide headlamps lit and at night I saw them coming home in the dark" (Garrett 282). Her family once again relocated back to Charleston, West Virginia, which remained her home until she was eighteen. It was during these teenage years that the influence began for her literary setting of Canona.

This article sponsored by: Your Ad Could Be Here! Contact Us General Robert Edward Lee Unquestionably the greatest general in the Confederacy, as well as the finest soldier in the field on both sides, Robert Edward Lee was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia on January 19, 1807. Although he was personally opposed to slavery and succession, he remained loyal to his beloved Virginia. After Fort Sumter, President Abraham Lincoln offered him a field command in the United States Army, but Lee resigned from the army and chose not to accept this position, joining the Confederacy instead. Robert E. Lee was the fourth child born to "Light Horse Harry" Lee, his father of Revolutionary War cavalry fame. Years before the Civil War began, Lee's father was imprisoned for debt, and later died of wounds he received while attempting to stop a riot in Baltimore. His death was devastating to the young Robert who was then raised solely by his widowed mother in Alexandria, Virginia. Lee attended private schools where he was noted for his extreme intelligence and high character, attributes that seemed to destine him for command later in life.

THE WOMEN OF BREWSTER PLACE U.S. Miniseries The Women of Brewster Place , a miniseries based on the novel by Gloria Naylor, was produced in 1989 by Oprah Winfrey's s firm Harpo, Inc. Winfrey served as Executive Producer and starred along with noted actors, Mary Alice, Jackee, Lynn Whitfield, Barbara Montgomery, Phyllis Yvonne Stickney, Robin Givens, Olivia Cole, Lonette McKee, Paula Kelly, Cicely Tyson, Paul Winfield, Moses Gunn and Douglas Turner Ward. The story, spanning several decades, includes a cast of characters that depict the constant battles fought by African-American women against racism, poverty, and sexism. Interpersonal struggles and conflicts also pepper the storyline, often revolving around black men who may be fathers, husbands, sons, or lovers. Other women from the building reveal bruises inflicted either by the men in their lives, or by the world in general. Cora Lee (Phyllis Stickney) continues to have children because she wants the dependency of infants; once they become toddlers her interest in them falters. By the end of the series, however, she begins to see the importance of all her children, and after being prodded by Kiswana, she attends the neighborhood production of an African American adaptation of a Shakespearean play. Through this experience and her children's reaction to it, the audience sees a change in Cora Lee.

http://www.robertfrost.org/hired.html
To set the mood of the story, there are three main characters, one of whom stays silent, Mary, Warren, and Silas. Mary is the acquaintance of Warren, a farm owner. One night Mary is sitting at home, waiting for Warren to return. She needs to tell him that Silas has come back. Now Silas had worked on the farm before and he was a very old and worn worker. When news of Silas’s return fell on Warren’s ears he was royally mad. What we find out is that Silas, because of his age is not the best of workers, always laying down on the job, leaving when the most work had to be done, and fighting with other people that worked with him. Warren and Mary were discussing what to do with him. Silas was told last year not to return, and here he was sleeping in the next room of their house. Speaking to one another, Mary is scared that Warren might hurt the old man’s feelings, by being upset with him. Mary tried to explain to him that Silas treated this place as his home and as long as it was set in his mind, this was where he was going to live, and die. Soon the two realize that Silas doesn’t know that he is regarded as a burden, he just aged and slowly his skill was reduced to nothing. He never meant for it to happen, just time caught up with him. Before Warren could go in to talk to Silas, Mary told him that Silas did talk to her briefly. And Silas did have a dream, one that he thought he could do, if he tried, to make a reality. Silas wanted to work with a farm hand that had gone off to school many years ago, named Harold Wilson. And in his dream the two of them would work and make the farm as smooth as they could. The only problem is that this demonstrates that Silas’s memory is fading, in that he expects a youth that worked on the farm one summer to return back to fields, just as Silas does, every year.
