Famaj verkoj:
  • Illustrations of the Family of the Psittacidae, or Parrots (1832) Illustrated excursions in Italy (1846) A book of nonsense (1846) Nonsense Songs, Stories, Botany and Alphabets (1871) More Nonsense, Pictures, Rhymes, Botany, etc. (1872) Laughable lyrics (1877)

Powered by groups.yahoo.com Why an Edward Lear page? Well, first of all because I like his nonsense very much, and then I wrote my thesis about him several years ago (don't worry, I'm not going to publish it!) so I am supposed to be widely read on the subject... Most important of all, however, is the fact that I haven't been able to find a great deal of Lear's nonsense poetry on the net and I think he deserves his small virtual space as much as his contemporary poetical colleague Lewis Carroll. After all, Lear may be considered the inventor of the term 'snail mail' That's it, if you share the Jumblies' spirit of adventure or your nose is as luminous as the Dong's, if you think there's nothing strange in living in the nest of an owl or your feelings are wrung with compuction, go on!

Edward Lear Lear preferred the term NONSENSE - the term limerick is listed by the Oxford English Dictionary as having first appeared in 1898 but is of much greater antiquity as a literary form. LIMERICK - a verse form in five lines ( aabba ) and the usual vehicle for bawdy ("There was a young man from Brent...etc etc."). The verse form is exclusively comic and can be found at the beginning of the eighteenth century ( Mother Goose Melodies for Children 1719) and later ( The History of Sixteen Wonderful Old Women One of Lear's own nom-de-plume was Derry-down-Derry, the name of a Fool in a Mummer play.
His first Book of Nonsense was published in 1846 but was an ephemeral affair and no copy is thought to have survived. The second edition was published by Thomas McLean in 1855 and a third came out in 1860 - on economic grounds using using woodcuts instead of lithography. These examples of his work are reproduced from The Book of Nonsense and More Nonsense published by Warne London c1885. Each measures 20 x25cms. Lear was a prodigiously prolific landscape painter in watercolour and oils, having learnt much about the latter from William Holman Hunt. He was equally active as an illustrator of birds and plants. His most enduring work is his corpus of Nonsense illustration, drawn quickly, with great spirit and intense feelings of melancholy, anxiety, and dwelling on the grave results of disorder.

LEAR, EDWARD
LEAR, EDWARD (1812-1888), English artist and humorist, was born in London on the I2th of May 1812. His earliest drawings were ornithological. When he was twenty years old he publishec a brilliantly coloured selection of the rarer Psittacidae. Its power attracted the attention of the I3th earl of Derby, who employed Lear to draw his Knowsley menagerie. He became " a permanent favourite with the Stanley family; and Edward 15th earl, was the child for whose amusement the first Book oj Nonsense was composed. From birds Lear turned to landscape his earlier efforts in which recall the manner of J. D. Harding but he quickly acquired a more individual style. About 1837 he set up a studio at Rome, where he lived for ten years, with summer tours in Italy and Sicily, and occasional visits to England During this period he began to publish his Illustrated JournaL of a Landscape Painter: charmingly written reminiscences o wandering, which ultimately embraced Calabria, the Abruzzi See Letters of Edward Lear to Chichester Fortescue, Lord Carlingford, and Frances, Countess Waldegrave (1907), edited by Lady Strachey, with an introduction by Henry Strachey. (F. L.*)

A Chronology of
Edward Lear's Life
All the information that follows derives from Vivien Noakes's biographical studies; I have used her Chronology in E. Lear, Selected Letters as a basis and added information from her magnificent biography, EL. The Life of a Traveller
Edward Lear was born in Highgate, 12 May. He was the twentieth child of Jeremiah Lear, a London stockbroker, and his wife Ann.
Four years after his birth, Jeremiah fell a defaulter in the Stock Exchange and the family had to abandon the fashionable life to which they were accustomed. Edward's upbringing was entrusted to his sister Ann, twenty-one years his senior, and Mrs Lear had nothing more to do with it. Young Edward certainly resented his mother's rejection, but found all the love he needed in Ann.
He was first attacked by what he called 'the Demon', epilepsy, when he was five or six, and a few years later 'the Morbids', sudden changes of mood with bouts of acute depression, began.
His early education was completely left to Ann and Sarah, another sister: beside the typical tuition books of the age they read to him classical tales and modern poetry (the Romantic poets), and taught him to draw, especially natural subjects.
