Notes
I own more books by Le Guin than by any other author (twenty five as of mid-2000). My favourite works are from her "classical" period - the fantasy trilogy consisting of A Wizard of Earthsea The Tombs of Atuan (1971), and The Farthest Shore (1972) and the science fiction novels The Left Hand of Darkness (1969) and The Dispossessed (1975). I might work up the courage to review these one day. ( A Wizard of Earthsea gets a mention in my review of JK Rowling's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone As you will see from my reviews, I'm also a fan of her more recent works, especially her short stories and non-fiction. Tehanu:
The Last Book of Earthsea
Ursula K. Le Guin
Victor Gollancz 1990 A book review by Danny Yee warning: there are spoilers in this review Written some twenty years on, Le Guin's Tehanu is an addition to her classic Earthsea trilogy, albeit with a subtitle which suggests no more will follow. Tehanu is a rather different work, however: the effects of Le Guin's "feminist conversion" are quite obvious here. At one point in A Wizard of Earthsea we read of Ged: "There was a great wish in him to stay here on Gont, and forgoing all wizardry and venture, forgetting all power and horror, to live in peace like any man on the known, dear ground of his home land". In Tehanu Ged achieves this. Having lost all magical power through his exertions in The Farthest Shore , he has been brought back to Gont by the dragon Kalessin. The central protagonist of Tehanu is, however, Tenar. In the twenty five years since The Tombs of Atuan she has married, raised two children and been widowed. In Tehanu she adopts a maltreated and scarred child called Therru and journeys to the side of the dying mage Ogion.

Ursula K. Le Guin straddles genres and masters them all
By Mark B. Wilson cience fiction, fantasy, realistic fiction, poetry and even children's literature all have at least one thing in common: Ursula K. Le Guin. The prolific author and feminist stands tall in several fields. Among the 60-plus books bearing her name are science fiction milestones (including The Dispossessed and The Left Hand of Darkness , each of which won both the Hugo and the Nebula awards), fantasy classics (including A Wizard of Earthsea , the first novel in the Earthsea cycle) and beloved children's books (the best known of which are Catwings and its successors). Here, Ms. Le Guin looks back over her long career, talks about her new novel, The Telling , and contemplates the future of speculative fiction. You've written many different kinds of books. How do you feel about the way books are marketed by genre? Le Guin: I have no real objection to marketing and shelving by genre, because people who read a certain type of book want to be able to find it. The problems come with books that are cross-genreand with the critical assumptions that anything they call "genre" is going to be automatically inferior and they don't have to review it or learn how to read it. That's where I get cross and run around orating about it. ... I know that I'm always called "the sci-fi writer." Everybody wants to stick me into that one box, while I really live in several boxes. It's probably hurt the sales of my realistic books like

For more information on feminist SF, see the Introduction After World War I, the writing of utopian fiction gradually declined, until the genre almost disappeared in mid-century, to be replaced by dystopias (descriptions of ultimately evil places) like George Orwell's Nineteen-Eighty-Four (1948). However, in the mid-seventies there was a spate of new utopias written by Americans inspired by the upsurge of social reform begun in the late sixties and continuing into the new decade. The most famous examples are Ernest Callenbach's Ecotopia, Samuel R. Delany's Triton, and this novel, though there are many other examples. What differentiated these new utopias was their attempt to evade the traditional criticisms of the old utopias like Edward Bellamy's Looking Backward: that they were static, boring, and unattainable. After all, utopias are not required, by definition, to be perfect. There seemed no reason to believe that all of humanity's problems could be solved through improved social organization; but it seemed possible that

"Tales from Earthsea"
So these are reports of my explorations and discoveries: tales from Earthsea for those who have liked or think they might like the place, and who are willing to accept these hypotheses: things change:
authors and wizards are not always to be trusted:
nobody can explain a dragon. - Ursula LeGuin, from the introduction.
I have never read Ursula LeGuin's Earthsea novels. I meant to, my mother has them and has long suggested them to me, but I just never managed to get around to it. I will now. Tales From Earthsea is a set of five short stories and an appendix called "A Description of Earthsea." The stories range from the romantic to the adventurous. "The Finder" tells the story of Otter, who escapes slavery to help start the school of wizardry on Roke island. I found it clever, if sometimes sad, and it does a good job of introducing the readers to the rules of this new world. Hugo nominated "The Bones of the Earth" is a tale of the relationship between apprentice and teacher, and of ultimate sacrifice. I thought this story was wonderful because of the interaction between the talkative Wizard Dulse, who lives a quiet life on the farm, and his graduated apprentice Silence.

    EARTHSEA "TRILOGY"
    by
URSULA K. LE GUIN A Wizard of Earthsea
    The Tombs of Atuan
    The Farthest Shore
Covers above are from Bantam books editions published in the late 1970s. Illustrated by Ruth Robbins.
Current editions of these books have different covers.
There are more Earthsea books than this "trilogy". Le Guin has in recent years written more books in the Earthsea cycle. The Earthsea books are classics of high fantasy. Originally marketed for teenagers, these books gained much wider appeal. Set on an archipelago on an ocean world, they involve the Wizard Ged, also called Sparrowhawk, at different points in his life.
    A Wizard of Earthsea
Ged is a peasant boy from Gont with a gift of magic. He goes to the School of Wizards on Roke Island. Attempting to prove his superiority with magic he recklessly brings forth a shadow being from the realm of the dead that he must confront. The Tombs of Atuan Ged is encountered years later in an dark, underground labyrinth by the young High Priestess Arha, also called Tenar. She was taken from her family as a girl to become a priestess to the Nameless Ones. Ged is a powerful wizard seeking the missing half of the Ring of Erreth-Akbe, on which is engraved the broken Rune of Peace. She makes him her prisoner, but sees that she is bound by meaningless ritual.
