Langland, William Langland, William, c. 1332 c. 1400 , putative author of Piers Plowman. He was born probably at Ledbury near the Welsh marshes and may have gone to school at Great Malvern Priory. Although he took minor orders he never became a priest. Later in London he apparently eked out his living by singing masses and copying documents. William Langland
    Profile
Poet; possibly born at Cleobury Mortimer , Shrophire, where there is a plaque in the church porch to this effect, although Ledbury and Colwall , near Great Malvern, make equally strong claims to his birth. Very little is known of Langland's life apart from information contained in The vision concerning Piers the plowman , on which his fame endures. He may have been educated at Malvern Priory and the poem shows knowledge of both religious scriptures and the Malvern Hills. He is thought to have left the district to live in London, ending in poverty. Piers plowman is a lengthy alliterative poem which is extant in three versions (named A, B and C texts) written between 1362 and 1392. The first is the shortest and this is developed and expanded in Version B. Version C has many changes. Through the words of a narrator, called the Dreamer, it tells, with great energy of the search for Christianity and a path to salvation through a series of eleven visions. In the first of these the Dreamer is asleep on the Malvern Hills but has a vision of surveying the people of the world below who are directed by him to travel on a pilgrimage to find truth. The work is second only in importance to Chaucer's Canterbury tales amongst mediaeval literature. It has been widely studied and has provided inspiration for other literature.

William Langland's The Vision Concerning Piers Plowman
The English poet, William Langland (c.1332-c.1400), was probably born at Ledbury in Herefordshire. He became a clerk but having married early, could not take more than minor orders, and possibly earned a poor living by singing in a chantry and by copying legal documents. He lived many years in London in poverty. His famous Vision Concerning Piers Plowman exhibits a moral earnestness and energy which is brightened by his vivid glimpses of the lives of the poorest classes of 14th century England. Piers Plowman
Prologue to The Vision Concerning Piers Plowman (B version)
In a summer season when soft was the sun,
I clothed myself in a cloak as I shepherd were,
Habit like a hermit's unholy in works,
And went wide in the world wonders to hear.
But on a May morning on Malvern hills,
A marvel befell me of fairy, methought.
I was weary with wandering and went me to rest
Under a broad bank by a brook's side,
And as I lay and leaned over and looked into the waters
I fell into a sleep for it sounded so merry.

The Vision of Piers Plowman composed by William Langland is well known as one of the most profound religious poems in the late Middle English period. It has been more than one hundred years since Walter W. Skeat completed his editions (1869-73) of the A, B, and C Versions, added its parallel text (1886), and exposed the details of Piers Plowman fully. Recent publication of editions by A. V. C. Schmidt and George Kane and his co-authors makes it possible to move deeply into the research of Piers Plowman immeasurably.
The present editor compiles this concordance consisting of 3 volumes in 4 parts using as its base edition A. V. C. Schmidt: William Langland's The Vision of Piers Plowman: The B-Text (Dent Edition, 1995) and lists its vocabulary systematically. This concordance is available to Langlandian scholars because it has definitions of each headword and is also quite useful as a Langland glossary.

New in SEENET: The second volume in The "Piers Plowman" Electronic Archive series. The popularity of William Langland's great medieval poem Piers Plowman survived long after its appearance in the fourteenth century. Testimony of the poem's popularity manifests itself in the fifty-six surviving medieval copies of the manuscript, none of which is signed by Langland and each of which introduces its own set of uncertainties. The "Piers Plowman" Electronic Archive , a collaborative effort devoted to publishing all the relevant medieval and renaissance witnesses to Langland's influential work, will enable scholars to conduct complex searches and comparisons of the various surviving manuscripts in order to trace the introduction of inauthenticities. Each volume of the archive will include an SGML-encoded version of one of the texts of this lengthy medieval poem, accompanied by color facsimiles of the original manuscript pages. Users can view the text in a number of modes, including diplomatic style, an exact transcription of the original text without any emendations or corrections, and scribal style, in which variations introduced by the scribe are color-coded. (For users not able to use the SGML reader (which works on Windows/95/98/NT), there are HTML versions of the texts and images.) This second volume of

The first in a series of documentary editions of the "Piers Plowman" Electronic Archive. MS 201, Corpus Christi College, Oxford appears as the first in a series of documentary editions for The Electronic Piers Plowman Archive. An early scribal version of the alpha family of the B text of Piers Plowman, this important but eccentric text has sixteen instead of twenty-one passus, and contains about 170 lines not shared with the majority of other B manuscripts. This CD-ROM supplies an SGML-encoded version of the text alongside color images of the original manuscript pages. The SGML version allows for structured and complex searches of the text itself and the manuscript's paleographic and codicological features. This version conforms fully with the 1994 Text Encoding Initiative guidelines. End of Europe's Middle Ages. william langland. Generally accepted as the author ofPiers Plowman, langland seems to have been an educated servant of the Church.
    http://www.ucalgary.ca/applied_history/tutor/endmiddle/bluedot/langland.html
End of Europe's Middle Ages William Langland Generally accepted as the author of Piers Plowman, Langland seems to have been an educated servant of the Church. Between about 1360 and 1400, he wrote three substantially different versions of Piers. The poem's narrator recounts a dream of allegorical characters like Holy Church, Reason, and Anger discussing and displaying moral and spiritual conditions. Langland puts these characters in the midst of everyday life - so Gluttony, for example, sets out for church, strays into an alehouse, carouses and quarrels with other scoundrels, and finally staggers home, sick and drunk, in the dark. The plowman of the title embodies an ideal of simple virtue. Many of Langland's views resembled those of Wyclif and the Lollards, even though he criticized them for their rebelliousness. - Janis Svilpis, Department of English, University of Calgary Piers Plowman (excerpt) Return to Literature The End of Europe's Middle Ages / Applied History Research Group / University of Calgary
