The coming-of-age novel ( Bildungsroman ) is a popular form among writers from formerly colonized nations; for their personal development has often been linked to the emergence of their homelands from colonial dependence or the personal transition from indigenous resident to immigrant. Perhaps the most widely-read and influential example from the Caribbean is the earliest, this novel by George Lamming, recounting his youth in Barbados, written shortly after he emigrated to England. Lamming makes this point vividly in his fine introduction to the Schocken Books edition of the novel, which you should read.
Introduction
Franz Fanon was a psychiatrist born in Martinique who worked in the French colony of Algeria and finally joined the revolution against the French. He wrote two eloquent and influential books examining racism: Black Skin/ White Masks (1952), and The Wretched of the Earth (1961). Much of his work stressed the difficulties caused by blacks trying to identify with their white oppressors. For him the failure to embrace one's own identity could be a form of mental illness.

By Paul Dorn
Originally written for Caribbean Literature, taught Spring 1995 at the San Francisco Art Institute by Alexandra Morrison
URL: http://www.runmuki.com/paul/writing/lamming.html Beyond the bloodshed and brutality of conquest, colonialism is experienced on a more intimate scale. The historic scars of imperial subjugation may be revealed in the difficult relationship between a poor, rural mother and her better educated son; the trauma a village feels at a violation of its customs by an outsider; the cruel way an occupying power punishes a talented native for pursuing cultural rewards it has stimulated a desire for. The colonial tradition has resulted in societies that continue to frustrate the full development of individual personality; divide communities according to complexion, class and belief; and limit possibilities for expression and achievement. This legacy of colonialism forms a common theme for many of the writers emerging from the Anglophone Caribbean. In attempting to relate this experience as felt by both communities and individuals, these writers have used a variety of narrative forms. Earl Lovelace's novel

http://www.guyanaundersiege.com/Cultural/George Lamming Warns about Race .htm
GUYANA UNDER SIEGE George Lamming Warns about Race by Rickey Singh HOME THE celebrated Caribbean novelist and political commentator, George Lamming, is challenging political parties and social interest groups of the Caribbean Community to make the region's ethnic/cultural diversity a cause for celebration and to exorcise "the virus of ethnic nationalism" that afflicts some of our societies. An icon of his native Barbados and the Caribbean, Lamming was at the time dealing with issues of identity and conflict, plantation culture and the creolisation process while addressing the topic of "Language and the Politics of Ethnicity."
His forum was the Institute of Caribbean and Latin American Studies, York University in Toronto. The occasion, attended by hundreds, among them citizens of the Caribbean diaspora, was the fourth in the series of annual memorial lecture by the university to commemorate the life and times of Dr. Cheddi Jagan, late President of Guyana, who died on March 6, 1997, following a heart attack.
At a time when ethnic divisions remain a very challenging problem in the region, particularly for societies like Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and Suriname, but also with increasing tension even in Barbados, Lamming, made a diagnostic course of plantation society in this region to dismiss any reliable claim to any form of "ancestral purity."

Africa In Exile The following article is the first in a series about African writers in exile. We will look both backwards and forwards, as the state of exile is hardly a new event in the lives of writers of African descent. But that, dear reader, is jumping the gun. We begin: Ngugi Wa Thiong'o: Exile And Resistance
Bronwyn Mills
Since 1982, Kenyan writer Ngugi wa Thiong'o has lived in exile in the United States. Probably best known for his novels about Kenya's struggle to throw off British colonial rule and to disgorge the bitter pill of neocolonialism his countrymen have subsequently had to swallow, he has had his own struggle with these forces. Beginning with his first novel, Weep Not Child (1964), through his fourth, Petals of Blood (1977) — which very clearly challenges "independent" Kenya's neocolonial regime — Ngugi wrote in English. However, in December of 1977, following the publication of Petals of Blood , Ngugi was arrested on vague, Kafkaesque charges and held without trial in Kenya's Kamiti Maximum Security Prison. At that point he began to write in his native Gikuyu, the language of the Mau Mau resistance movement. As he has said many times, this is one way to resist the cultural dominion of the West.

38. Earle Birney Poems: Study Questions
For george lamming. For george lamming is a poem Birney wrote about a humblingexperience he had in Jamaica the experience was tied to a letter to a friend.
http://www.cariboo.bc.ca/ae/e_birney/english/bibliog/poems.htm
Earle Birney Poems
Status quo
This poem is making a statement about human nature, the quest to gain power at the expense of others, and the perpetuality of a status quo in human society. Never, has a society existed in which some sort of status quo did not exist. There is always a "slumgirl locked from life," suppressed by those in power. The status quo exists in nations as well as people. The quest to expand ones borders "wrinkle the heart of man."
The second stanza touches upon government propaganda during war, in order to gain public support to "aim the atom's rage" at the enemy. This may be a reference to Hiroshima.
The final stanza states that the next generation will be bound to repeat history, and refers to Belsen, a Nazi war camp.
Discussion Questions
Q: What is meant by "aim the atom's rage?" Q: To what historical events does the poem refer? Q: Does this poem present an optimistic point of view? Explain.
Time-bomb
The last lines of the poem are integral to understanding the poem: O men be swift to be mankind
or let the grizzly take.
