2000-2001 Writers in Residence -
Sandra Birdsell and Ven Begamudre
Award-winning fiction writer Sandra Birdsell (photo by Oktober Revolution), was Writer-in-Residence for September 2000, and shared the residence position with fellow award-winning Regina author, Ven Begamudr© (photo by Don Hall). Sharing the position became a possibility after Birdsell was offered a wonderful opportunity as a writer-in-residence at McMaster University in Ontario. Birdsell proposed the idea to the Regina Public Library, and a partnership was struck. Birdsell has a varied background of writing/teaching related experiences, including five previous residencies at universities and libraries throughout Canada. She has 32 publications to her credit including 10 books, 10 radio and television scripts, numerous anthologies and two plays. One of her newest books, a children's book: The Town that Floated Away (HarperCollins, 1997), earned Birdsell the Saskatchewan Book Award for Children's Literature in 1997. Ven Begamudr© is also an award-winning author of fiction and non-fiction. He received the F.G. Bressani Literary Prize for prose, the City of Regina Writing Award, and prizes for fiction and creative non-fiction from various literary magazines. Begamudr©'s book, Laterna Magika, (Oolichan Books, 1997) shared the City of Regina Book Award and was a best book finalist in the Canada-Carribbean Region for the 1998 Commonwealth Writer's Prize. Like Birdsell, Begamudr© has a demonstrated commitment to assisting aspiring writers. He is a past president of the Saskatchewan Writers Guild and was the founding president of the Sage Hill Writing Experience. Begamudr© has taught creative writing at the University of Regina Extension, the Saskatchewan School of the Arts, and he was a mentor in the Strategic Initiatives/Saskatchewan Writers Guild emerging writers program.

U of S Student Newspaper since 1912! January 18, 2001 Volume 92, Issue 22 The Next Canada: In Search of Our Future Nation
By Connie C. Topott

Sheaf Staff Writer
Author Myrna Kostash bridges Canada’s generation gap
In The Next Canada: In Search of Our Future Nation , Myrna Kostash attempts to answer the questions of the post-thirty crowd today: What will the social, political and moral landscape of Canada look like in the next 20 years? How will technological and corporate globalization affect our institutions and communities? Is it possible to maintain communities in the computer/cyber age? Have we sold out to the American corporate dream? Kostash scrapes through the popular media hype that the future of Canada is one of rampant consumerism and social disintegration to the true canvas beneath. Rather than philosophizing from an ivory tower, Kostash approaches the issue on a grass roots level. She travels across Canada, interviewing next generation Canadians from all levels of society and a variety of ethic and social backgrounds: Starbucks employees, factory workers, students, musicians, E-zine publishers and E-business entrepreneurs. Many of them are voices, opinions and situations we recognize as ourselves or those close to us. Kostash is careful to cross-reference their thoughts, views and ambitions with that of the previous generation in hopes of uncovering the gap between the values of social movements in the 60's and 70‘s and the social and political convictions of the next generation. What she discovers is a generation that continues to give and build, who are as committed to the community of Canada as those who struggled so hard to establish it.

Creative nonfiction achieves its best purpose at the intersection where public events meet private lives. Participants should bring to this workshop notes about a personal "moment of astonishment
," something provoked by an event in the world around them. This may be a news item, a historical factoid or fragment, a photograph, a letter, an advertisement, a verse, a scientific datum, something from the public archives—anything that has an existence independent of the writer. Participants will use these notes as well as research materials to trigger their subjective responses—emotions, memories, reflections, conjectures, fantasies, commentary—to this provocation. In addition to writing exercises and group discussions, there will be plenty of time to generate new work. Myrna Kostash was born and is a long-time resident of Edmonton, Alberta, where she works full-time as a nonfiction writer of magazine articles, books, and radio documentaries. Her books include:
