Ken Kesey (1935-2001)
Biography of Ken Kesey:

Ken Kesey, the youngest of two sons, was born in on September 17, 1935 in La Junta, Colorado and in 1946 moved with his family to Springfield, Oregon, where he spent several years on his family's farm. He was raised in a religion household where he developed a great appreciation for Christian fables and the Christian ethical system. During high school and later in college, Kesey was a champion wrestler, setting long-standing state records in Oregon. Voted "most likely to succeed" in high school, Kesey was an unlikely candidate to become one of the most controversial figures of his age and one of the leading figures of the counterculture. After high school, Kesey eloped with Faye Haxby, his high school sweetheart, and they had three children together: Jed, Zane and Shannon. Kesey attended the University of Oregon with a degree in Speech and Communications. He also received a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to enroll in the Creative Writing program at Stanford. While at Stanford, he participated in experience involving chemicals at the psychology department to earn extra money. These chemicals included psilocybin, mescaline and LSD. It was this experience that fundamentally altered Kesey, personally and professionally. While working as an orderly at the psychiatric ward of the local VA hospital, Kesey began to have hallucinations about an Indian sweeping the floors. This formed the basis for 'Chief Broom' in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, his writing project at Stanford.

Kesey became in the 1960s a counterculture hero and a guru of psychedelic drugs with Timothy Leary. Kesey has been called the Pied Piper who changed the beat generation into the hippie movement. "I think McMurphy knew better than we did that our tough looks were all show, because he still wasn't able to get a real laugh out of anybody. Maybe he couldn't understand why we weren't able to laugh yet, but he knew you can't really be strong until you see a funny side to things. In fact, he worked so hard of pointing out the funny side of things that I was wondering a little if maybe he was blind to the other side, if maybe he wasn't able to see what it was that parched laughter deep inside your stomach." (from One Flew Over Cuckoo's Nest Ken Kesey was born in La Junta, Colorado, and brought up in Eugene, Oregon. His father worked in creamery business, and eventually gained success after founding the Eugene Farmers Cooperative. Kesey spend his early years hunting, fishing, swimming, and he learned to box and wrestle, and he was a star football player. He studied at the University of Oregon, where he acted in college plays. On graduating he won a scholarship to Stanford University. Kesey soon dropped out and joined the counterculture movement. In 1956 he married his his school sweetheart, Faye Haxby. He began experimenting with drugs and wrote an unpublished novel, ZOO, about the beatniks of the North Beach community in San Francisco. Tom Wolfe described in his book

... Home Ken Kesey Ken Kesey's novels included One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest Sometimes a Great Notion and Sailor Song . He also wrote many short stories, magazine articles and editorial pieces. His life experiences helped to serve as a link between the Beat Generation and the growth of the hippie movement. A graduate of the University of Oregon, Kesey moved to the Bay Area in the late '50s, and later took part in a unique series of drug experiments sponsored by the United States government. From these antiseptic experiences, Kesey and his band of Merry Pranksters initiated the Acid Tests, complete with LSD, swirling colors, free-form performance art and music from bands like the Grateful Dead. In his last years, Kesey continued the trip with the release of archival footage from his groundbreaking adventures. Ken Kesey passed away Saturday, November 10, 2001 at the age of 66. He will be fondly remembered and sorely missed. (posted 9/00) Digital Interviews: How did you develop an interest in writing?

As a cultural and literary figure, Ken Kesey stands exactly at the midpoint between the Beats of the 50's and the Hippies of the 60's. Kesey borrowed from Jack Kerouac quite consciously in fact, he went on the road with Neal Cassady , and if that's not borrowing from Kerouac I don't know what is. But there were several differences to Kesey's 60's version of the Great Trip Across America:
  • They drove a psychedelic bus named Furthur instead of a big old Hudson or a borrowed Cadillac They preferred LSD to liquor They treated women as equals instead of sex objects (most of the time) They danced to The Warlocks (soon to become the Grateful Dead ) instead of grooving on jazz and shouting 'GO!'
Kesey did not write about this scene, but journalist Tom Wolfe did in 'The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test'. Kesey did write two important novels, the powerful 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest,' in which a modern psychiatric ward becomes a metaphor for oppressive American society, and 'Sometimes A Great Notion.' Interestingly, these books are not the least bit trippy, though their intentions are without a doubt cosmic. He later published 'The Further Inquiry,' a screenplay with many photos from the bus trip and a mostly incomprehensible plot in which Kesey, Cassady and others must testify at some sort of supernatural trial. Kesey also recently published 'Sailor Song,' a wacky allegory involving environmental crises, a Kesey-like middle-aged writer, and a rock band called the Dreadful Great.

He was born on Sept 17, 1935 in La Junta, Colorado and grew up in the Pacific Northwest. An unusually confident and charismatic young man, he enrolled in a prestigious creative writing program at Stanford University and began tearing the place up almost upon arrival. I have been getting some strange emails lately,
and I thought I should post Dads last article again: THE REAL WAR
Ken Kesey I could have written this better on 9-11-'01, the day it was happening
if I could have written. Everything was so clear that day, so
unencumbered by theories and opinions, by thought, even. It just was.
All just newborn images, ripped fresh from that monsterous pair of
thighs thrust smoking into the morning sunshine. All just amatuer cameras allowing us to witness the developing drama in sweeping handheld seizures. All just muffled mikes recording murmered gasps.... Now, more than a week has passed. The cameras are in the grips of professionals, and the microphones are in the hands of the media. Bush has just finished his big talk to Congress and the men in suits are telling us what the men in uniforms are going to do to the men in turbins if they don't turn over the men in hiding. The talk was planned to prepare us for war. It's going to get messy, everyone agrees. It's

Eventually the govenment decided to make LSD illegal and Ken and the Pranksters fled to Mexico. After coming back to the U.S. to do one last performance, known as the "Acid Test Graduation," Ken and a few others were busted on a marijuana charge. Upon release from jail, Ken moved to a farm in Pleasant Hill, Oregon, "settled down," and raised his family there. HOME WRITERS BOOKS INFO ... CREDITS
