http://www.rambles.net/kennealy_mantle.html
Patricia Kennealy-Morrison, Blackmantle (HarperPrism, 1997) It is Earth year 1650, twelve centuries after Brendan the Astrogator led the Gaels forth from Earth to found Keltia. The Kelts are without a ruler, the last monarch having died without an heir. While the nobles wrangle about the succession, the Fir Bolg slip back into Keltia and settle in. Athyn Cahanagh was born on a battlefield to a dying warrior. Rescued by Cormac mac Archill, she is raised as his own daughter. But she is no common orphan, but destined to drive forth the Fir Bolg and become Keltia's next queen. Morric Douglas is a bard, trained at Seren Beirdd. Athyn falls in love with his music the first time she hears it, played by another. When she and Morric are finally introduced at a celebration of Samhain, sparks fly quite literally. Amzalsunea Dalgarno is an Incomer (a Fir Bolg). Known by the Keltic name Melassaun, she is the one-time lover of Morric Douglas. And when she cannot keep him, she makes sure that no other will. The novel begins with Athyn's birth on the battlefield, her early years, growth and training to become both a soldier and a judge. Although she has magical gifts, her dying mother forbade Cormac to have her trained in their

Patricia Kennealy-Morrison, The Deer's Cry (HarperPrism, 1998) Legend tells of the monk Brendan, called the Navigator, who sailed from Ireland and landed on many wondrous islands. Some say that he even discovered North America centuries before Columbus. What they don't tell us is that Brendan did not sail the earthly sea, but the vast spaces between the stars, and the islands he landed on were not islands in the ocean, but distant planets, nor was he called the Navigator, but the Astrogator. Nor do the legends mention the cause of Brendan's voyage, Patraic mac Calprin, latterly known as St. Patrick, the worst thing to ever happen to Ireland. This is the premise of The Deer's Cry , the eighth book in Patricia Kennealy-Morrison's popular Keltiad. Since this is chronologically the first book of the series, fans will already know the basic framework of the story. Twenty-two thousand years ago, the Danaans came to Earth from a distant star gone nova and established the city of Atlantis. When that city was destroyed, the Danaans fled to Ireland (Eruinn), where they lived in peace until the arrival of the Gaels. Eventually, those two races settled down to live together and Brendan Aoibhell was one of the results. He was the son of Fergus, the human lord of Fanad, and his Danaan wife, Nia the Golden. The story begins with Brendan's meeting with a young slave who, though at first his friend, will eventually become his bitterest enemy. At first the two merely spar verbally about their religious differences, for although Brendan follows the "Shan-vallachta" or Old Ways, his new friend is a Christling, a follower of the new religion but four centuries old. There comes a time, however, when Brendan decides that everyone would be better off if he just helps Patraic escape from Ireland. And thus is set in motion a chain of events that will eventually lead to the founding of Keltia among the stars, for Patraic does not stay out of Eruinn, as Brendan had hoped, but returns determined to convert the entire island to his religion.

The Silver Branch ~ A brilliantly realistic story of Aeron's early life and the events leading up to her ascension to the Throne of Scone. The Copper Crown ~ The Copper Crown is a rich and magical book, as deep and generous as the best in human nature. While it never flinches in its presentation of the tragedy of ignorance and closed-heartedness, it soars in its descriptions of better ways of living. The Throne of Scone ~
The Hawk's Gray Feather ~
Ms. Kennealy-Morrison has, by placing the story cycle of the Arthurian myths into a "Keltic" star-empire, successfully molded the tales into a space epic of the first order. This first of the cycle follows the young Arthur as he begins to come into his heritage, encountering those folk who will come to mean the most to him in the years ahead. The author successfully captures both the flavor of the myth and the meaning of what it is to BE a "Kelt", so thoroughly as to make the reader feel homesick for a land we see only in these pages.

Last year, the wrath of an author unhappy with the RP use of her characters unexpectedly led to my friendship with her. PATRICIA KENNEALY-MORRISON tracked down and called me at work to let me know how unhappy she was with the use of her "intellectual property." She is correct they are her property. Blackmantle , by Patricia Kennealy-Morrison published 1997; hardback 1997, HarperPrism Blackmantle is the seventh of Kennealy-Morrison's justly acclaimed Keltiad books, but it's different from the others in that it's the most autobiographical. The dominating theme of Blackmantle , and perhaps of Kennealy-Morrison's entire life, is her relationship with the late Jim Morrison, lead singer of the rock group The Doors. Kennealy-Morrison and Morrison pledged their love to each other in a private religious ceremony about a year before Morrison's death in 1971. Kennealy-Morrison (she added "Morrison" to her last name a few years ago) chronicled their relationship in her excellent nonfiction book Strange Days: My Life With and Without Jim Morrison. Blackmantle reads like a fiction version of Strange Days, only idealized and with all the real-life people dressed up in Keltic clothes. In Blackmantle , young Athyn Cahanagh (Kennealy-Morrison) wages war to free the Kelts from the influence of the Fir Bolgs, an alien race that has brought the Keltic people under its sway through a combination of conquest, trade, and the introduction of foreign customs. The war plot is insubstantial, however, next to what is obviously the main plot: the romance between Athyn and the bard Morric Douglas (Jim Morrison, whose middle name, not coincidentally, is Douglas). Athyn and Morric believe that their love is fated to last not just a lifetime, but beyond. So when Morric is killed by a jealous ex-lover (a representation of Morrison's real-life lover Pamela Courson, who supplied Morrison with the heroin that killed him), Athyn, who in addition to being a skilled warrior is also a powerful but untrained sorceress, challenges death itself to get him back. Athyn's harrowing of the Keltic underworld Annwn is the best part of
