James Kelman
Novelist, short-story writer and playwright. Born in Glasgow, the son of a picture framer and restorer, Kelman left school at the age of fifteen to take an apprenticeship in the printing industry. However he left this job to follow his family to the USA, before returning to Scotland (1972) and periods of unemployment interspersed with short-term jobs. He entered Strathclyde University to read philosophy, but gave up his studies having found them lacking relevance. He joined a writing group at the University of Glasgow which brought him into contact with writers such as Alasdair Gray (b.1934) and Tom Leonard (b.1944), both of whom were to co-author works with Kelman. It was not until 1983 that his first book was published; a collection of short stories Not Not While the Giro , a depiction of working-class life in Scotland in a flowery vernacular tongue, which characterises Kelman's work. His work also shows influences of James Joyce and Anton Chekhov. Other publications quickly followed: his first novel The Busconductor Hines (1984) and A Chancer (1985). Both

9. JAMES KELMAN: Walking Among The Fires - BETWEEN THE LINES
Interview with the author.
http://www.thei.aust.com/isite/btl/btlinkelman.html
Author James Kelman carefully rolls the sides of a cigarette paper around a large wedge of tobacco. He sniffs and his eyes water from concentrating on packing it in tightly and making sure no wiry curls snake out of the hand-made filter of the cigarette. There's a grim smile of determination on his rugged and lined features, and a grin when he finally completes the task.
A nocturnal and solitary creature by profession, Kelman, the controversial 1994 Booker Prize Winner and artist most frequently described as "Scotland's answer to Kafka, Joyce and Kierkegaard", is the epitome of a working class man minus - today - a pint of swampy beer and the gritty ambience of the surroundings of his local pub.
He reaches out, as if from the very skein of the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas or writers of his ilk. Writers whose spirit dots history but does not necessarily produce more of its kind. Kelman's Scottish brogue is punctuated and pinched with sadness, regret and the fiery edge of instinct and survival, and the uncomfortable nature of the small office behind the reception area of Melbourne's Soiftel Hotel does nothing to endear his inspirational qualities, making him seem even more like a fish out of water, gasping for a hint of a familiar vice around him.
At home in Scotland's working class district or amid the throng and bellows of pubs filled with folk whose hands are roughened by a hard days graft, or amongst the excited cries of the local betting office where bet slips cover the ground like carpet, Kelman is far removed from the UK's stuffy literary fraternities who delight in intimate discussions on the philosophies and intellectual confines of art and act as purveyors of a tradition that can crush a naive author with their academic prowess and overbearing nuances of political correctness.

Kelman won the Booker Prize (1994) for How Late It Was, How Late ; in 1997 a collection of his short stories, Busted Scotch , was published. This is his first new work since How Late , and though he takes fewer chances here (but, then, how could he be any more challenging?), his language sings as before, and he shows a range with his characterizations. The language is not always that of lower-class ordinary men; a few of the voices in this collection of 20 first-person narrative stories belong to middle-class ordinary men, which means that some of the stories contain paragraphs that aren't peppered with amazing usages of the f- word or such exotic terms as couldnay, telt, merr te , and so on. The stories are rich with layered meanings, and the juxtaposition of those exotic words produces a music in the reader's head. And Kelman's realm is the mind; he thinks he's on to us, and as one character aptly explains, "It was incredible to think everybody might be like this. An entire world full of people going about having these thoughts. Billion of heads exploding." What's going on in the mind and between men and women seem to be Kelman's favorite themes. "Oh My Darling" joins those concerns in a marvelous two-step that quickens both mind and heart with its truths. When she breaks him down with a look and he must will self-control, it's a thunderous moment, a D. H. Lawrence moment. But Kelman is mainly full of his own nice turns; his signature is writ large.

These three men have fought to overcome cultural stereotypes and reclaim their literary tradition first as underground writers and now, with the success of Trainspotting , as bestselling authors. But along with all the celebrity comes a lot of senseless hype. On a recent visit to Boston, the `Great Scots' say they've had enough.
by Chris Wright
"They wanted me to tour America last year when Trainspotting came out, but I couldn't be bothered," says Irvine Welsh wearily, contemplating the portobello-mushroom sandwich before him. "I couldn't be bothered with this one either. I'm kind of sick of it, but . . . " But Welsh is here nonetheless, in Boston, at the Audubon Circle restaurant on Beacon Street touring. Along with fellow Scottish authors James Kelman and Duncan McLean, Welsh makes up one-third of the so-called "Great Scots" trio visiting five cities in the US at the behest of their publisher, W.W. Norton. Welsh's apathy, though, is infinitely preferable to what I'd been getting minutes earlier. Ordering from the menu, I'd noticed that Welsh was looking at me not just looking at me, but looking at me. Was he thinking about hitting me? Irvine Welsh has a shaven head, a crinkly line of a mouth, and a pair of small, watery eyes that seem to peer out of the center of a bulbous, intensely serious face. He looks hard.
