Juvenal Sanso Juvenal Sanso: A Peninsular Eye : An introduction by Nick Joaquin taken from the book, SANSO: Art Quest Between Two Worlds by Rod Paras-Perez Leafing through a sheaf of Sansos in reproductions, we got this weird feeling of clairvoyance, as though peering through an eye not ours: another eye at once native and alien, that made the familiar unsettlingly unfamiliar. It is said that at the Second Coming we who rise to be judged will be looking at creation with a new eye because we'll behold it, no longer as through a glass darkly, but in the light of God's own knowledge of it. Therefore will we see heaven and earth anew because totally revealed by the apocalypse that's the Second Coming, which will feast the youth of creation, the dawn of innocence, the return of Eden. JUVENAL SANSO (his first name means a feasting of youth) is another kind of second coming. Two or three generations after Spain withdrew from these islands, here is this Peninsular giving us images of a country that, in the days of his grandfathers, was both theirs and ours. SANSO's Philippines is thus ambiguous: home and exile; intimate and outlandish. His paintings and sketches are about 400 years late because his is the Spanish eye, the Peninsular eye, viewing the Philippines for the first time. Had there been a Sanso with Magellan or Legazpi, his work would have been a "juvenal" indeed: a celebration of youth and decadence as represented by newfoundland, a young tropical Eden. The too-late-born Sanso of our time can still be credited with "Juvenal" but profoundly disturbed has been the feasting of youth that his art should have been.

Juvenal fl. 1st to 2d cent. a.d. , Roman satirical poet. His verse established a model for the satire of indignation, in contrast to the less harsh satire of ridicule of Horace. Little is known about his life except that during much of it he was desperately poor. A tradition tells that as a youth he was banished from court for satirizing an imperial favorite; later his work reveals a deep hatred for the Emperor Domitian. He is known chiefly for his 16 satires, which contain a vivid representation of life in Rome under the empire. They were probably written in the years between a.d. 100 and a.d. 128. The biting tone of his diatribes has seldom been equaled. From the stern point of view of the older Roman standards he powerfully denounces the lax and luxurious society, the brutal tyranny, the affectations and immorality of women, and the criminal excesses of Romans as he saw them, especially in his earlier years. The rhetorical form of his verse is finished, exact, and epigrammatic, furnishing many sayings that have become familiar through quotation. See translations by Rolfe Humphries (1958), G. G. Ramsay (rev ed. 1961), and P. Green (1967, repr. 1974); studies by I. G. Scott (1927), Gilbert Highet (1955, repr. 1961); M. Coffey

    Juvenal: Satires Book I
Juvenal, Edited by Susanna Morton Braund
Hardback In stock Satire was a genre of poetry invented and developed by the Romans. When it came into Juvenal’s hands, he stamped his mark upon it: indignation. His angry voice had an overwhelming influence upon later European satirists and persists in modern forms of satire. In this new commentary, Susanna Morton Braund situates Juvenal within the genre of satire and illuminates his appropriation of the ‘grand style’ of declamatory rhetoric and epic poetry for his indignant persona in Satires 1–5, including the notorious second Satire. The commentary on each of the Satires is followed by an essay which offers an interpretation of the poem, including a synthesis of recent critical thought. These essays, together with the overview in the Introduction, present the first integrated reading of Book I as an organic structure.

Paul Juvenal the Elder of 1
    Born 1579, Died 1643
    Draftsman, Painter
    German
Best known for his ceiling and facade paintings, Paul Juvenal the Elder received his early training from a Flemish portraitist and architectural painter. Early in his career he began to specialize in paintings of architectural interiors, often populated with biblical figures, on copper. Sometime before 1613, he traveled to Italy, where he must have seen Adam Elsheimer's delicate landscapes on copper. Juvenal designed and painted facades and interior decoration for many important homes in Nuremberg. His subjects included both religious and mythological themes. In addition to large decorative ensembles, Juvenal continued to paint religious scenes, often on small copper plates like those of Elsheimer. Like many Nuremberg painters, he also received commissions to copy and restore works by Albrecht Dürer. He worked in Nuremberg until 1638, when he moved first to Vienna and then to Hungary, now Slovakia, where he died. His three sons and his daughter all also became painters.

He had too much trouble dealing with the heated emotions going on over the human proclivity for starting a century-long vendetta over six square feet of land that really didn't belong to anyone. After a while, the Elohite started to think that the ungrateful fools were touched in the head - and, when a Power has gotten to that stage, Falling is almost a formality.
