Larry Baker Janusz Bardach ... AddSheetOnline Famed poet works to get to the truth
By Kathryn Howe
Iowa City Press-Citizen Donald Justice does not lollygag, he goes straight to the heart of the matter. The Pulitzer Prize-winning poet is inspired by truth and writes what is real. Now comes the evening of the mind. Here are the fireflies twitching in the blood. More than once, critics have referred to him as a “poet’s poet,” not so much a writer for the general population, but for people who know a thing or two about poetry. It is a great compliment. “I think I’m a realist,” Justice says. “I like the truth. I try to get something real. Usually, I start with an idea or rhythm. I have to have a starting point. The poem doesn’t always come out full-blown. Almost always it takes a long time.” “ His poetry will be read and remembered as long as people read and remember American poetry.” Marvin Bell
UI professor
In some cases, years. Two of his favorite poems are “Ode to a Dressmaker’s Dummy” and “On the Death of Friends in Childhood,” one of his earlier poems. Justice said he wrote the first five lines quite quickly, the last line took a couple years to find what he really wanted to say in the end.

First Death
by Donald Justice This is Michael Carey for Voices from the Prairie a weekly sampling from the rich soil of Iowa’s literary tradition. Today we hear from Donald Justice a Pulitzer Prize winning poet from Iowa City. We will be hearing the second and third parts of his three part poem entitled " First Death ." It has to do with the experience of his grandmother’s death when he was a child in Florida. Although Mr. Justice’s words here are somber and deeply moving, his touch with language is always light and full of music.
from First Death
June 13, 1933
The morning sun rose up and stuck.
Sunflower strove with hollyhock.
I ran the worn path past the sty.
The barn door creaked. I walked among
Chaff and wrinkled cakes of dung.
In the dim light I read the dates
On the dusty license plates Nailed to the wall as souvenirs. I breathed the dust in of the years. I circled the abandoned Ford Before I tried the running board. At the wheel I felt the heat Press upwards through the springless seat.

Mrs. Snow
Busts of the great composers glimmered in niches,
Pale stars. Poor Mrs. Snow, who could forget her,
Calling the time out in that hushed falsetto?
(How early we begin to grasp what kitsch is!)
But when she loomed above us like an alp,
We little towns below would feel her shadow.
Somehow her nods of approval seemed to matter
More than the stray flakes drifting from her scalp.
Her etchings of ruins, her mass-production Mings
Were our first culture: she put us in awe of things. And once, with her help, I composed a waltz, Too innocent to be completely false She beamed and softened then. Ah, those were the days. "Mrs. Snow" by Donald Justice from The Sunset Maker published in 1987 by Atheneum. For Voices from the Prairie and Humanities Iowa, this is Michael Carey hoping you continue to hear the music blooming all around you. Biography Donald Justice was born in Miami, Florida and has taught at a number of universities including Syracuse, the University of Florida and for many years at the University of Iowa, in Iowa City where he now lives in retirement with his wife Jean Ross. Happiness: The Aesthetics of Donald Justice In his first book, The Summer Anniversaries , he took on traditional forms like the sonnet, the sestina, and the villanelle, and for each, particularly the sestina and the villanelle, enlivened the forms through variations. A sestina might drop its envoy, a villanelle might become even more demanding in an abbreviated form. Verse itself was a heuristic game, as it probably always should be, so that in a poem like "In Bertram's Garden," one realizes that most of the possibilities of the tetrameter line have been explored, and all of them beautifully. Soon the purple dark must bruise
Lily and bleeding heart and rose,
And the little Cupid lose
Eyes and ears and chin and nose,
And Jane lie down with others soon
Naked to the naked moon.

Pantoum of the Great Depression
Our lives avoided tragedy
Simply by going on and on,
Without end and with little apparent meaning.
Oh, there were storms and small catastrophes.
Simply by going on and on
We managed. No need for the heroic.
Oh, there were storms and small catastrophes.
I don't remember all the particulars. We managed. No need for the heroic. There were the usual celebrations, the usual sorrows. I don't remember all the particulars. Across the fence, the neighbors were our chorus. There were the usual celebrations, the usual sorrows. Thank god no one said anything in verse. The neighbors were our only chorus, And if we suffered we kept quiet about it. At no time did anyone say anything in verse. It was the ordinary pities and fears consumed us, And if we suffered we kept quiet about it. No audience would ever know our story.

Executive summary
New Zealand has garnered international acclaim for its youth justice processes. In particular, the New Zealand invention of the "family group conference (FGC)" for youth offenders has been hailed as a pioneering model of restorative justice. As an American prosecutor, I came to New Zealand this year specifically to study the FGC and other restorative justice initiatives in New Zealand. I have become convinced that restorative justice processes work and should be pursued as a matter of criminal justice policy. But what is restorative justice? Restorative justice is a process whereby parties with a stake in a criminal offense (including the offender, the victim, and the communities of each) collectively resolve how to deal with the aftermath of the criminal act with an emphasis on repairing the harm from that act - the harm to the victim, to the community, and to the offender her/himself. Examples of restorative justice include FGCs, sentencing circles in North America, and victim-offender mediations in the United States, each of which are described below.

Oblivion: On Writers and Writing

by
R. C. Travis ISBN: 1-885266-60-X "I see now that criticism can be of enormous value
in helping to define and refine one's own thinking; and
there is always the chance, if the criticism is any good,
that it might do the same for others."

- Donald Justice For several months we have been discussing the importance of reading the work of other poets. I find it also important that one read books of criticism and commentary in order to get a glimpse into who a poet is as a person. By discovering who they are and how they think, we can also get a better image into why they write as they do and also why they have been able to achieve their level of success. In doing this, we can then learn from the masters what we need to become better writers. This month I would like to introduce you to Donald Justice and his book of critical prose, Oblivion (Story Line Press, 1998). The book is divided into three sections. The first section is a series of critical essays on different types of writing, such as meter, free verse, and prose. Justice also, within these essays, discusses specific writers and tackles the question of obscurity and oblivion. In his chapter on meters he discusses the precise use and value of meter and also states that the poem does not retain value or memory merely because it has meter. "The choice whether or not to use meters is as likely to be dictated by literary fashion as by depth of feeling or sincerity . . . The meters move along in their own domain, scarcely intersecting the domain of meaning, except in some illusory fashion or by virtue of conventions nearly private. The responsibility they bear to the sense, comic writing aside, is mostly not to interfere . . . meters do accompany the sense, like a kind of percussion only, mostly noise. Over and above syntax, they bind the individual words together, and the larger structural parts as well, over and above whatever appearance of logic survives in the argument; as a result, the words and parts seem to cohere . . . How they assist the recollection is by fixing it in permanent, or would-be permanent, form."

Social justice work engages, energizes
by Donald E. Skinner
Dennis Dixon, of Tacoma, Washington, remembers the moment that social justice work became real to him. "It was the first time I went down to a soup kitchen to help out. I saw four hundred people standing in line. Just seeing that they were not all the stereotypical down-and-out men, but that many were neatly dressed families with children, brought home to me how close we all are to that edge." For his wife, Holly Galbreath, her moment came as she was helping organize a local Million Mom March for gun control. "As they read the names of children who had died through gun violence I looked down at my own children and had absolute clarity about why I was there." Dennis and Holly are social justice committee cochairs of their congregation, the Unitarian Universalist Association of Tacoma. The 155-member congregation's social action has waxed and waned over the years depending on the available enthusiasm; currently it's on the upswing. With new mission and vision statements that call the congregation to be involved in the community, a new minister, and completion of the Welcoming Congregation program, the congregation has found new energy. In the past year Tacoma friends and members have been helping clean up a local Superfund pollution site, feeding the homeless, and walking in antihunger fundraisers. In the fall many members went door to door in the congregation's neighborhood in an effort to defeat an antigay ballot measure. Other projects planned this year include asking people to give up discretionary spending for a voluntary simplicity week and participating in America's Promise, a national program to help youth.
