USA Biografie: Diana Wynne Jones is in haar leven vaak verhuisd.

Deep Secret by Diana Wynne Jones Published by TOR Books 375 pages, 2002 Modern Classic Reviewed by Sue Bursztynski The Starscape series, of which Deep Secret is a part, has been reprinting children's and young adult novels, some long out of print, for a new generation of young readers, though recently there was an announcement that new novels would soon be published in the series.
The idea is a good one. Though there are some wonderful novels being written right now, it seems a shame for children and teens to miss out on the classics. Start them off on the good stuff from the past, get them hooked and then produce new books.
Tough Guide To Fairyland Harry Potter novel and thinking, "Hang on, I've seen this story before..." I was remembering The Lives of Christopher Chant , also about a boy wizard studying magic at boarding school, but not enough alike for complaints of plagiarism, being set in an alternative Victorian Britain. (The publishers also saw the resemblance, it seems, and have reprinted the lot!)
The pleasure of a Diana Wynne Jones novel is that even when it's being serious there is enough humor to leaven any grimness. She just can't seem to write anything that doesn't make you grin at least a few times, if not outright laugh.

Teya Rosenberg, Martha P. Hixon, Sharon M. Scapple and Donna R. White, editors, Diana Wynne Jones: An Exciting and Exacting Wisdom (Peter Lang, 2002) "That fiction has power to alter reality is, at least in one sense, literally true. Fiction is a product of language, and human beings live largely in a social and linguistic world above all, a world of narrative. It is through narrative that we understand ourselves and our own history and project our hopes and anxieties into the future. Persuasive and powerful users of language have power to shape these narratives and thus to shape the reality of their listeners and readers." Charles Butler in "Magic as Metaphor and Reality" Diana Wynne Jones is the sort of author who makes readers gush. Children who read her say, "She is sooooo cool! I love her books!" Scholars who read her say, "If I were limited to a one-word description of the appeal and force behind the fantasy writing of Diana Wynne Jones, it would be inventiveness." I myself think Jones's writing is wonderful, and her novels Fire and Hemlock and The Homeward Bounders are two of my favorite books, books I've returned to again and again over the years. I often get the chance to enthuse with children and young adults about her work, but not so often with scholars; I was therefore eager to read this new collection of twelve scholarly essays (and one interview)

Diana Wynne Jones, (Methuen Children's Books, 1985; Collins, 2000) Me editor mentioned in What's New that Emma Bull's quintessential urban fantasy novel, The War for the Oaks , was finally getting the hardcover edition it so richly deserves. Another novel that has deserved the same treatment is Diana Wynne Jones' , a novel so highly regarded that copies of the original 1975 Greenwillow hardcover fetch as much as US$ 300.00 from booksellers on the American Booksellers Exchange Web site. The edition reviewed here has no dust jacket, but instead has a library-style illustrated cover. It has nice, easily readable print on an off-white paper. It's a good solid book with memorable characters and an engrossing plot which got read in one rather long sitting on a cold, rainy afternoon late in October. Three pots of Earl Grey tea and a number of me wife's excellent scones were devoured in the reading of . It certainly was as good as the aforementioned The War for the Oaks The blurb from the publisher that was included in the press packet says: The fire and hemlock photograph above Polly's bed sparks memories in her that don't seem to exist any more. Halloween; nine years ago; she gatecrashed a funeral party at the big house and met Thomas Lynn for the first time. Despite the fact that he's an adult, they struck up an immediate friendship, and began making up stories together - stories in which Tom is a great hero, and Polly is his assistant. The trouble is, these scary adventures have a nasty habit of coming true... But what has happened in the years between? Why has Tom been erased from Polly's mind, and from the rest of the world as well? Gradually Polly uncovers the awful truth and, at Halloween nine years on, realises that Tom's soul is forfeit to demonic powers unless she can save him.

Cat's sister Gwendolen is a witch so powerful that the great wizard Chrestomanci takes an interest and brings them to his castle to be properly educated. But Gwendolen is surprised to find she is not being treated with the respect she deserves and begins a campaign of nasty magic practical jokes against the castle. Failing to perturb the wizard she goes too far and the sinister forces she allies herself with threaten the peace of all worlds.
A good evening's entertainment from an author whose cheerful style does not prevent her from building up a serious head of suspense. If you like Harry Potter you will probably like this. [Reviewed at the suggestion of a reader].

£3.99, Usually dispatched within 24 hours Mrs Mad's humble opinion What happens? Eric Chant had always known that his sister Gwendolin was a witch. After they were orphaned she arranged for them to live with a fellow witch. Gwendolin continued her lessons in witchcraft and Eric learned to play the violin, until Gwendolin got so annoyed with the awful sound it made that she turned it into a cat. From then on things get very confusing as the strange and powerful Chrestomanci begins to annoy Gwendolin, especially when he takes her magic away. Is it easy to read? This is quite a difficult read and a child would need to be a very confident reader and have a good imagination to fully understand this book. Anything else? A wonderful story, full of magic and adventure. This type of story comes so naturally to Wynne Jones and she keeps the story moving at a quick pace. There are so many twists and turns in the story that it is difficult to put this book down. You might find the beginning a bit of a struggle but it really pays to keep going as the rest of the story is really worth it. You become involved in the thoughts of the characters, and the descriptions of people and places make it easy to become even more entrapped in the story. You wonder how things could get any worse for Eric and his sister and then off she goes and does something even more shocking.

The heroine, Sophie Hatter becomes the victim of an ageing spell and believes the only person who can help her is the wicked wizard Howl. He lives in a floating castle and it is whispered he eats the souls of young girls. So even if he lifts the spell, Sophie will still be in great danger. What happens? Sophie is a spirited heroine who decides to find her own solutions to her problems. She enters the mysterious castle and meets its strange occupants: the self obsessed wizard, his young apprentice and the wicked fire demon Calcifer. Is it easy to read? Girls and boys will love this story. It needs someone willing to read a long text and with good reading skills. Went down very well as a book to read to the whole class. Anything else?

The Tough Guide to Fantasyland
by Diana Wynne Jones
London: Orion, 1996 ``A science which hesitates to forget its founder is lost'': thus Alfred North Whitehead. Whether he was right about sciences is debatable, but it's certainly true of literary genres. The awful state of present-day fantasy largely consists of the fact that it is still, fifty years on, churning out trilogies which are debased versions of The Lord of the Rings - ``elf operas,'' as they were recently named on Usenet . From time to time one of these will be a skillful piece of work (I'm partial to Tad Williams's Memory, Sorrow and Thorn myself), but for the most part the forests logged so that they might be printed have died in vain. What Jones has done here is produce an open, flagrant and (if you know the genre) hilarious parody of books which often tremble on self-parody to start with. The Tough Guide consists of a set of instructions for use, follow by an alphabetical guide to the features of Fantasyland and a typical tour therein, complete with handy marginal symbols for thematic cross-references. (The symbols can be marvelous: s.v.

ANNE GAY
The Line One Interview with Diana Wynne Jones "We nearly hanged my sister," Diana Wynne Jones, award-winning author, says quite seriously. "We strung her up on skipping ropes over a beam because she wanted to know what it was like to be a pantomime fairy. She was so busy trying to look graceful, she didn't notice she was slowly strangling. "It was a weird existence. We were sort of in the margins the whole time. Our parents actually put us in an unheated one-up one-down building right across the yard from the conference centre my father ran, and just sort of left us there. I'd beg, borrow and save and get books out of the library and anything in them that struck me as adventurous I tried to do, sometimes with slightly hairy results. That's the sort of isolation we were in. "I actually started writing at I suppose the age of 8. I finished my first book at the age of 12 because not only did nobody read stories to us, my two sisters and myself, but my father was so incredibly mean that we didn't have any books to speak of. It was a sort of famine, and that's really what started me off. I don't feel at all grateful to my father even though it did start me writing, because I was going to do that anyway." Yet her father did tell stories - only not to his children. Diana continues, "The ghost stories he told were to the visitors at the conference centre. I think my mother had a genius for finding houses that are haunted. There was one part of the centre that I always ran through like mad. When I talked to my sisters years later, they said they did too. It just felt so weird and frightening. One day I came back from school to find the whole place was in an uproar because one of the cleaning ladies had turned round and spoken to what she thought was a fellow cleaning-lady and then she saw a notice board through her in exactly this place. It was quite funny. She went off to work in the bacon factory because she didn't mind buckets of blood but ghosts were another thing entirely!
