Samuel Johnson Quotes
Almost every man wastes part of his life attempting to display qualities which he does not possess. Let me smile with the wise, and feed with the rich. To do nothing is in everyone's power. He who waits to do a great deal of good at once, will never do anything. Knowledge is of two kinds. We know a subject ourselves, or we know where we can find information upon it. Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel. No man ever yet became great by imitation. It is necessary to hope...for hope itself is happiness. Nature has given women so much power that the law has very wisely given them little. He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man. The martial character cannot prevail in a whole people but by the diminution of all other virtues. I would rather be attacked than unnoticed. For the worst thing you can do to an author is to be silent as to his works. Curiosity is one of the most permanent and certain characteristics of a vigorous intellect. Leave all the afternoon for exercise and recreation, which are as necessary as reading. I will rather say more necessary because health is worth more than learning.

REMARKS: 021273 RELEASED BY DRV SAMUEL R. JOHNSON Colonel - United States Air Force Shot Down: April 16, 1966 Released: February 12, 1973 The nearly seven years that I spent in Hanoi but most especially the more than two years in a camp called Alcatraz engendered a close-knit bond between me and some great Americans. I count these men as true friends and their courage and ideals have brought home vividly to me what America is all about. I can only emphasize that the freedoms that most Americans take for granted are in fact, real and must be preserved. I have returned to a great nation and our sacrifices have been well worth the effort. I pledge to continue to serve and fight to protect the freedoms and ideals that the United States stands for. Oliver Ellsworth was born on April 29, 1745, in Windsor, CT, to Capt. David and Jemima Ellsworth. He entered Yale in 1762 but transferred to the College of New Jersey (later Princeton) at the end of his second year. He continued to study theology and received his A.B. degree after 2 years. Soon afterward, however, Ellsworth turned to the law. After 4 years of study, he was admitted to the bar in 1771. The next year Ellsworth married Abigail Wolcott. From a slow start Ellsworth built up a prosperous law practice. His reputation as an able and industrious jurist grew, and in 1777 Ellsworth became Connecticut's state attorney for Hartford County. That same year he was chosen as one of Connecticut's representatives in the Continental Congress. He served on various committees during six annual terms until 1783. Ellsworth was also active in his state's efforts during the Revolution. As a member of the Committee of the Pay Table, Oliver Ellsworth was one of the five men who supervised Connecticut's war expenditures. In 1779 he assumed greater duties as a member of the council of safety, which, with the governor, controlled all military measures for the state. When the Constitutional Convention met in Philadelphia in 1787 Ellsworth once again represented Connecticut and took an active part in the proceedings. During debate on the Great Compromise, Ellsworth proposed that the basis of representation in the legislative branch remain by state, as under the Articles of Confederation. He also left his mark through an amendment to change the word "national" to "United States" in a resolution. Thereafter, "United States" was the title used in the convention to designate the government.

JOHNSON, SAMUEL EALY, SR. (1838-1915). Samuel Ealy Johnson, Sr., cattleman, soldier, and grandfather of Lyndon Baines Johnson, qv the tenth child of Jesse and Lucy Webb (Barnett) Johnson, was born in Alabama on November 12, 1838. The family moved to Georgia and in 1846 to Lockhart, Texas. Sam's parents died in the late 1850s, and Sam and his brother Jesse Thomas built a port-holed rock barn as a headquarters for their cattle business at what is now Johnson City. Sam enlisted in Col. Xavier Blanchard Debray's qv regiment on September 18, 1861, and served until the end of the Civil War qv on the coast of Texas and in Louisiana. He was present at the battle of Galveston qv and at the battle of Pleasant Hill in Louisiana. After the war he returned to Lockhart and Johnson City and resumed his cattle buying. He and his brother trailed cattle to Kansas and Montana from 1870 to 1873. Johnson was married to Eliza Bunton on December 11, 1867, in Lockhart, and the couple set up housekeeping in the log cabin at Johnson City that the two brothers had used before the war. They moved to Caldwell County and later to Buda in Hays County, where all but the oldest of their nine children were born. The family returned to Blanco County about 1889 and settled on the Pedernales River twelve miles from Johnson City. Johnson died of pneumonia at Stonewall, Texas, on February 25, 1915.
