http://www.jackmagazine.com/beatnews/jjohnson.html
Joyce Johnson Joyce Johnson and Jack Kerouac were lovers in 1957-1958, during the time when the beat scene was becoming publicly known. She later wrote Minor Characters , a memoir about the women of the beat generation, including Elise Cowen and Hettie Jones. Her writing and books and editing have brought her to the front of not only the beat world, but the literary world. In Minor Characters , she explains the flight of women from traditional expectations to becoming something else: Naturally, we fell in love with men who were rebels. We fell very quickly, believing they would take us along on their journeys and adventures. We did not expect to be rebels all by ourselves; we did not count on loneliness. Once we had found our male counterparts, we had too much blind faith to challenge the old male/female rules. We were very young and we were in over our heads. But we knew we had done something brave, practically historic. We were the ones who had dared to leave home." Johnson's newest book

Joyce Blackwell Johnson I am a native North Carolinian. After graduating high school, I attended North Carolina Central University where I pursued a major in History and a minor in Education. In 1976, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from North Carolina Central University in 1976 with a B.A. degree in History. I enrolled in graduate school the same year at North Carolina Central University and completed my studies a year later. I subsequently graduated Summa Cum laude with a M.A. in History. After graduating from North Carolina Central University’s graduate program in History, I returned to the History department as an Instructor. After teaching African-American history and World Civilizations for three years at the university, I left to teach in the New Hanover County Public School System, Wilmington, North Carolina. While with the New Hanover County School System, I taught Social Studies, Drama, Language Arts and North Carolina history. I eventually left the New Hanover County System to take a job with the Wake County Public School System as a Social Studies Teacher. I remained with the Wake County System for five years and then decided to return to college-level teaching. However, to do so, I realized that I needed a Ph.D. In 1992, I enrolled in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where I pursued a Ph.D. in the History department’s newly formed U.S. Women’s history curriculum. My minor was African-American history. I graduated in December 1998, becoming the university’s first student to graduate from the doctoral program in Women’s history. While enrolled at UNC, I taught history at Saint Augustine’s College in Raleigh, North Carolina; North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina; and, North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Joyce Johnson
JOYCE JOHNSON , artist and calligrapher resides in Rapid City, South Dakota where she has a studio in the downtown district. A baby-boomer, born at the end of WW II in Radford, VA, she has spent most of her life in Rapid City. As a small child, she loved to draw and paint. It is a passion that has continued through out her life.
Johnson has studied with many well-known artists through the years, including Vern Skaug, Rose Edin, Dora Hagge, Duane Light, Russell Norberg and Patsy Smith. She has found learning from many artists with different approaches is an excellent method of study. This allowed the development of her own style without undue influence from any particular school.
She studied calligraphy with the internationally known instructors Marsha Brady, Stan Knight, and Denys Taipale Knight. She uses her calligraphic skills to record her own poetry and that of others and incorporates it into her art work.
Johnson has taught art and calligraphy classes for many years. She believes in sharing skills with her students in the same way others have shared skills with her.
Bold colors and sharp crisp lines characterize Johnson's work. She is proficient in many media including oil, watercolor, pastel, pencil and acrylic. This allows the subject to dictate the medium.

on women in the Beat Generation ...
What did "real life" mean to a middle-class adolescent girl in 1950. I yearned for it and thought I'd recognize it when I saw it, but I could not quite define it. I was sure real life was sexual, though my ignorance of sex was profound.... Until I entered Barnard College in 1951 and took a freshman course called Modern Living, I did not have a very clear idea of how babies were born, nor did many of my classmates. I would meet Jack Kerouac only six years later. The neighborhood around Columbia University and Barnard College was the birthplace of the Beat Generation, the meeting ground of Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs, and Lucien Carr. The group included two unusually adventurous young women as well Edie Parker, Kerouac's first wife, and Joan Vollmer Adams, who had a common-law marriage with Burroughs. As I would be in the next decade, both were drawn to charismatic men who lived the larger lives denied to women, and offered them little in the way of security or protection.... Like Carolyn Cassidy, who later married Kerouac's friend Neal, these Forties women seemed content to define themselves as wives of geniuses.

Born 1935
It is New Years Eve. Joyce Glassman is attending a party with her friends Elise Cowen and Allen Ginsberg at the home of Lucien Carr Mostly Lucien talked on and on with Allen about the past, events that had happened twelve years ago. Stories about the West End, and an apartment on 115th Street, and a girl called Edie Parker, and Joan Burroughs, the woman who had died. It was as if part of Lucien had gotten stuck back there and eternally lost and he'd ended up becoming what he was not supposed to be. At midnight some people down in the street blew whistles. It was 1957.(Minor Characters , Joyce Johnson)
Johnson wrote a memoir of her experiences with the Beat Generation personalities, especially her affair with Kerouac. Minor Characters which won a National Book Critics Circle Award is subtitled "A Young Woman's Coming-of-Age in the Beat Orbit of Jack Kerouac." Johnson was 21 years old, a Barnard college graduate working in the New York publishing industry when she met Jack Kerouac . The so-called "king of the Beats" was 13 years older. Johnson knew Allen Ginsberg through a college friend who had dated Ginsberg. It was Ginsberg who fixed Johnson up with Kerouac in January 1957. A few months after their affair began, Kerouac's life would radically change as a result of the publication of his second novel
