Review
Here's new illustrations and an old poem, both of which are beautifully combined. I remember doing the poem as part of a choral performance in college and it stirred me then as it does now the wonderful retelling of the Biblical story by the great Black poet. The images: the darkness was "Blacker than a hundred midnights down in a cypress swamp"; God clapped his hands "And the waters above the earth came down, the cooling waters came down". Johnson's God is a humanized one and therefore an understandable one. The illustrations like the poem are simple and childlike with bold colors and clear images. This is a book for a family to share.

Search Weep not, weep not,
She is not dead;
She's resting in the bosom of Jesus.
Heart-broken husband — weep no more;
Left-lonesome daughter — weep no more;
Grief-stricken son — weep no more;
She's only just gone home. Day before yesterday morning,
God was looking down from his great, high heaven,
Looking down on all his children,
And his eye fell on Sister Caroline,
Tossing on her bed of pain. And God's big heart was touched with pity, With the everlasting pity. And God sat back on his throne, And he commanded that tall, bright angel standing at his right hand: Call me Death! And that tall, bright angel cried in a voice That broke like a clap of thunder: Call Death! — Call Death! And the echo sounded down the streets of heaven Till it reached away back to that shadowy place, Where Death waits with his pale, white horses. And Death heard the summons, And he leaped on his fastest horse, Pale as a sheet in the moonlight Up the golden street Death galloped, And the hoof of his horse struck fire from the gold, But they didn't make no sound. Up Death rode to the Great White Throne

The Rise of Realism: 1860-1914: James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938)
Index Like Du Bois, the poet James Weldon Johnson found inspiration in African-American spirituals. His poem "O Black and Unknown Bards" (1917) asks: Heart of what slave poured out such melody
As "Steal Away to Jesus?" On its strains
His spirit must have nightly floated free,
Though still about his hands he felt his chains. Of mixed white and black ancestry, Johnson explored the complex issue of race in his fictional Autobiography of an Ex- Colored Man (1912), about a mixed-race man who "passes" (is accepted) for white. The book effectively conveys the black American's concern with issues of identity in America. Index

Document 6: Mary Talbert to James Weldon Johnson, 28 June 1922, NAACP Papers, Part 1: Meetings of the Board of Directors, Records of Annual Conferences, Major Speeches, and Special Reports, 1909-1950, Library of Congress (Microfilm, Reel 24, Frames 410-12). Introduction James Weldon Johnson became the executive secretary of the NAACP in December 1920 and alongside Walter White, his assistant, Johnson was the driving force behind the NAACP campaign for the Dyer Bill.[ ] Mary B. Talbert wrote this letter to Johnson just eight days after the NAACP conference which inspired the formation of the Anti-Lynching Crusaders. Talbert indicated in this letter that the initial objective of the Crusaders was to focus on ending the lynching of colored women. The following two documents restate this view, but not enough documentary material has survived to evaluate whether the gendered goal stated in this letter became the sole justification for the Crusaders' fundraising campaign. Documents and suggest that the prevention of lynching of both white and black women was the objective of the Crusaders, at least as stated in their publicity flyers.

Johnson

James Weldon Johnson was born on this date in 1871. He was an African American composer and lyricist and educator. From Jacksonville, Florida., Johnson was encouraged to study English literature and the European musical tradition. He attended Atlanta University with the plan that the education he received there would be used to further the interests of the black people.
After graduation, he took a job as a high school principal in Jacksonville. In 1900, he wrote the song Lift Every Voice and Sing on the occasion of Lincoln's birthday; the song which became immensely popular in the black community and became known as the "Negro National Anthem," or Negro National Hymn. Johnson moved to New York in 1901 to collaborate with his brother Rosamond, a composer, and become successful as a songwriter for Broadway, but decided to take a job as U.S. Consul to Venezuela in 1906.
While employed by the diplomatic corps, Johnson had poems published in the Century Magazine and The Independent. In 1912, Johnson published

The Autobiography of an EX-Colored Man
With Henry Louis Gates Format: Paperback
Publication Date: December 1989
Edition Description: 1st Vintage Books ed Edition Number:
Format: Hardcover
Publication Date: December 1992 A poem based on the story of creation from the first book of the Bible.
Review from BookList : -Carolyn Phelan Review from Publisher's Weekly : Illustrating this verse adaptation of the biblical Creation story, Ransome intersperses paintings of natural wonders with scenes of an African American man reciting to an audience of rapt youngsters. Ages 4-8. (Sept.) -Publisher's Weekly Review from The Horn Book, Inc. : Ransome sets Johnson's spirited narrative poem in a Southern countryside, where five children sit listening to a storyteller. Punctuated between contemporary paintings of the man and his listeners are six impressionistic double-page spreads, in vibrant gold, green, and blue hues, depicting scenes of the Creation of the Earth, sky, animals, and, finally, human beings. These colorful illustrations capture the dramatic mood of Johnson's poem. Review from School Library Journal : -School Library Journal The Creation Written by civil rights leader and poet James Weldon Johnson in 1899, the powerful words of the song often called the African-American anthem come alive with stunning, emotionally charged illustrations by two-time Coretta Scott King Award winner Jan Spivey Gilchrist.
