Jefferson Bible The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth
    Extracted Textually from the Gospels
    Compiled by Thomas Jefferson
Edited by Eyler Robert Coates, Sr.
Thomas Jefferson believed that the ethical system of Jesus was the finest the world has ever seen. In compiling what has come to be called "The Jefferson Bible," he sought to separate those ethical teachings from the religious dogma and other supernatural elements that are intermixed in the account provided by the four Gospels. He presented these teachings, along with the essential events of the life of Jesus, in one continuous narrative. This presentation of The Jefferson Bible offers the text as selected and arranged by Jefferson in two separate editions: one edition uses a revised King James Version of the biblical texts, corrected in accordance with the findings of modern scholarship; the second edition uses the original unrevised KJV. The actual verses of the Bible used for both editions are those chosen by Jefferson. Visitors should find the revised KJV text much easier to read and understand. Those seeking the precise English version Mr. Jefferson used when making his compilation can click on "Unrevised KJV text." The Jefferson Bible is now available in Spanish:

    50. THOMAS JEFFERSON'S VIEWS ON WOMEN - The Early America Review - Fall 1997

Thomas Jefferson's Views on Women By Thomas O. Jewett
T his study explores Jefferson's views on women largely through his own words. It attempts to put these views in the context of Jefferson's era and culture and not in contemporary times. Thomas Jefferson
T homas Jefferson stands as an infallible oracle to today's society. Both ends of the political spectrum quote him as evidence for their causes. While Jefferson's words seem to have credence for contemporary events, it must be remembered that he wrote them for the eighteenth century. As Joseph Ellis so eloquently stated in his book the American Sphinx, "Lifting Jefferson out of that context and bringing him into the present is like trying to plant cut flowers." (Ellis, 1997, P.292). It is with some trepidation, therefore, that the author explores Jefferson's views concerning women. His opinions should not be gauged by today's standards, but by that of his time, geography, and class.
J efferson lived, chronologically, midway between the Age of Reason with its trust in science, and the Romantic Era with its uninhibited emotionalism. Both, in uneasy coexistence, can be seen in Jefferson's character and views. As a romantic he enjoyed, especially in his youth, a sentimental emotional life. But, he also recognized that this romantic side to his nature threatened to take charge the pure reason of the mind he valued so highly.
A s a young man, Jefferson rejected the Stoic ideal of disdain for human passion, desire, and enjoyment of things usually accounted good in this world...Jefferson found himself drawn to the Epicurean ethic, which, while admitting the reality and the necessity of the passions, sought to control them by the exercise of reason. The passions, constituted the true life of man, they must be kept under tight rein in order to attain the serenity, tranquillity, happiness, and right conduct sought by every man. (Miller, 1995, P.178).

    Thomas Jefferson
Third President of the United States [The people] are in truth the only legitimate
proprietors of the soil and government.
    Thomas Jefferson
was born on April 13, 1743 at Shadwell in Albemarle county, Virginia. He had inherited a considerable landed estate from his father, and doubled it by a happy marriage on Jan. 1, 1772, to Martha Wayles Skelton. He was elected to the House of Burgesses when he was 25. As a member of the Continental Congress in 1776, Jefferson was chosen together with John Adams, Benjamin Franklin , Robert Livingstone and Roger Sherman to draft the Declaration of Independence. He wrote the declaration himself and was amended by Adams and Franklin. In 1784 Jefferson became, first, a commissioner to negotiate commercial treaties, and then, Benjamin Franklin's successor as minister. Toward the end of his mission he reported the unfolding revolution in France. Eventually he was repelled by the excesses of the French Revolution. He thoroughly disapproved France's imperialistic phase under Napoleon Bonaparte . Because of his absence in Europe, Jefferson had no direct part in the framing or ratification of the Constitution of the United States.

    56. The Thomas Jefferson Center For The Protection Of Free Expression
Announced on April 13, the anniversary of the birth of thomas jefferson, the award's namesake, the jefferson Muzzles go to individuals or organizations responsible for particularly egregious limitations to free expression.
    http://www.tjcenter.org/muzzles.html
"Did you ever hear anyone say 'that work had
better be banned because I might read
it and it might be very damaging to me'?" Joseph Henry Jackson,
      American Journalist, 1894-1946
      THE JEFFERSON MUZZLES

Since 1992, the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression has celebrated the birth and ideals of its namesake by calling attention to those who in the past year forgot or disregarded Mr. Jefferson's admonition that freedom of speech "cannot be limited without being lost."
Announced on or near April 13 the anniversary of the birth of Thomas Jefferson the Jefferson Muzzles are awarded as a means to draw national attention to abridgments of free speech and press and, at the same time, foster an appreciation for those tenets of the First Amendment. Because the importance and value of free expression extend far beyond the First Amendment's limit on government censorship, acts of private censorship are not spared consideration for the dubious honor of receiving a Muzzle.
Unfortunately, each year the finalists for the Jefferson Muzzles have emerged from an alarmingly large group of candidates. For each recipient, a dozen could have been substituted. Further, an examination of previous Jefferson Muzzle recipients reveals that the disregard of First Amendment principles is not the byproduct of a particular political outlook but rather that threats to free expression come from all over the political spectrum.

Because it is no longer safe for our students to travel abroad, Fairfax County Public Schools has canceled all international trips (i.e., trips outside of the United States) until there has been a significant change in world events. With regard to trips within the United States, they may continue, except for trips to New York City and Washington, D.C. Organizers of such domestic trips need to be reminded, however, that there is a possibility that these trips could be cancelled as well. Again, such decisions are dependent on world events.

When her servitude ended, Molly purchased a farm along the Patapsco River near Baltimore. and two slaves. In time she set the slaves free and married one of them, a man named Bannaky (changed from Banna Ka). They had several children, one a daughter named Mary. Mary Bannaky grew up, purchased a slave, Robert, whom she later married and lived on the family farm. On Nov. 9, 1731, a son, Benjamin, was born to Robert and Mary Bannaky. Using the Bible, Molly Bannaky taught Mary's children to read, and soon after, Benjamin would read the bible to his mother and grandmother. For those times, life was good to this little community, but work was hard, but not challenging to Benjamin. He learned to play the flute and the violin, and when a Quaker school opened in the valley, Benjamin attended it during the winter where he learned to write and elementary arithmetic. He had an eighth-grade education by time he was 15, at which time he took over the operations for the family farm. He devised an irrigation system of ditches and little dams to control the water from the springs (known around as Bannaky Springs) on the family farm. Their tobacco farm flourished even in times of drought.
