Christopher Isherwood

Christopher Isherwood was born in England in 1904, came to the U.S. in 1939 and lived in Santa Monica from then until his death in 1986. He is probably best known for The Berlin Stories , stories that fictionalize his life in pre-World War II Berlin and that were adapted as the stage play I Am a Camera and the popular musical Cabaret The Huntington Library made headlines in May of 1999 with the announcement of the acquisition of Christopher Isherwood's complete archive, received from Don Bachardy. The collection contains literary drafts, diaries and journals, photographs, audio and videotapes, and letters from many authors, including W. H. Auden, Truman Capote, E. M. Forster, Somerset Maugham, Stephen Spender, Gore Vidal and Tennessee Williams. For fans of Isherwood, original materials from the archive will be on display when The Huntington presents a major exhibition on Isherwood's life and works in 2004, to commemorate the 100 th anniversary of his birth. In conjunction with the exhibition, there will be lectures and symposia discussing this influential author. Much of the collection is cataloged and available for scholarly research. The two portions remaining to be processed are the letters and poems of W.H. Auden, most of the photographs, and the audio and videotapes. Qualified scholars with a specific research project involving this archive may contact the Curator of the collection, Sara S. Hodson at

After working as a secretary and a private tutor, Isherwood gained a measure of coterie recognition with his first two novels, All the Conspirators (1928) and The Memorial (1932). During the 1930s he collaborated with his friend W.H. Auden on three verse dramas, including The Ascent of F6 (1936). But it had been in 1929 that he found the theme that was to make him widely known. Between 1929 and 1933 he lived in Berlin, gaining an outsider's view of the simultaneous decay of the Weimar Republic and the rise of Nazism. His novels Mr. Norris Changes Trains (1935; The Last of Mr. Norris) and Goodbye to Berlin (1939), which were later published together as The Berlin Stories, established his reputation as an important writer and inspired the play I Am a Camera (1951; film 1955) and the musical

Biography
Christopher Isherwood
Writer England Born 26 Aug 1904
Died 4 Jan 1986
Christopher Isherwood came from an old established family against whose traditions he showed himself, at the beginning of his literary career, to be in extreme revolt. He was educated at Repton and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. He studied medicine for a time at King's College, London, and then, after the publication of his first novel 'All the Conspirators' in 1928, left for Berlin where he earned a modest living as a teacher of English. In 'The Memorial', his second novel (1932), some of the psychological tensions behind this turn in his life may perhaps be glimpsed.
'Mr Norris Changes' (1935) and 'Goodbye to Berlin' were ironic and compassionate pictures of Berlin during the death throes of the Weimar Republic and of the foreign birds of passage who were temporarily drawn there. In these two books Isherwood perfected the technique of the 'camera eye', a narrator who was never, under the surface, less than a partial observer of the scene.
A fondness for the fantastical became apparent after his departure from Germany when he began to write plays with WH Auden. After his expedition to China with Auden in 1938 (which resulted in a travel book, 'Journey to a War'), Isherwood left for America, applied for American citizenship and eventually settled in California which remained his home for the rest of his life. Later, he became interested in making stage adaptations of his shorter novels, and wrote several scripts for television films.

Pronunciation Key
Isherwood, Christopher , British-American author. After the appearance of his first novel, All the Conspirators (1928), Isherwood went to Germany. The four years he spent there furnished him with the material for what are probably his best novels, The Last of Mr. Norris (1935) and Goodby to Berlin (1939; reissued as The Berlin Stories, 1946); these books formed the basis for John Van Druten's play, I Am a Camera (1951), and for the Broadway musical Cabaret (1966). The Berlin novels, which report on the period of social and political unrest during the Nazi rise to power, illustrate Isherwood's general concern with the problem of the intellectual in a tyrannical society. A close friend of W. H. Auden , Isherwood collaborated with him on the dramas The Dog Beneath the Skin The Ascent of F6 (1936), and On the Frontier (1938), as well as on Journey to a War (1939), a book on China. Isherwood emigrated (1939) to the United States, becoming a citizen (1946). During the 1940s his interests turned to Hinduism; see his Essentials of Vedanta (1969). Among his later works are

Lo mismo que el joven hombre con el pecho de mujer y todos los demás que entraban en la esfera del Instituto, Christopher se convirtió automaticamente en un ejemplar de exposición y con ello en un objeto de diagnóstico para Hirschfeld. Christopher William Bradshaw Isherwood
Born 26th. August, 1904, in Disley, Cheshire, England; died 4th. January, 1986.
Anglo-American writer. Son of an army officer killed in World War I. One of his preparatary school friends was W. H. Auden (who became a poet). Christopher Isherwood went to school at Repton. He then went to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. He then studied medicine at King's College London (1928-29). He gave up medicine to teach English in Germany (1930-33). He lived behind the Nollendorfplatz in Berlin. His novels Mr Norris Changes Trains and Goodbye to Berlin were based on his experience of post-slump, pre-Hitler Berlin. These became the basis, first of the play (1952) and film (1955) I Am a Camera , and then of the musical (1966) and film (1972) Cabaret While in Germany Christopher Isherwood had a boyfriend, Heinz, who was wanted by the police for draft evasion. He tried to get him out of the country by paying Gerald Hamilton (1888-1970) £1000 to smooth the way towards obtaining Mexican naturalisation for Heinz. Nothing came of it and Christopher Isherwood came to regard Gerald Hamilton as a rogue laced with poison. He is represented by Authur Norris in Mr Norris Changes Trains . Gerald Hamilton was also friends with Ferdinand, ex-King of Bulgaria who awarded him various decorations which he sold.
