Wisdom The words of the goddess Dike: The greatest injustice is to commit injustice. It is better to suffer injustice then to repay injustice with injustice. The words of the goddess Aphrodite: Seek always the beauty in every being, with love in your heart. Honor everyone, including yourself. Seek to bring love and beauty into existence. The words of the goddess Artemis: Be strong in all things, and like the bow and its string, learn to bend without breaking, learn to complement and compromise when appropriate, yet learn to be unbending and strike true if it becomes necessary. The words of the goddess Maat: Be true to yourself, or you can never be true to any other person. The words of the goddess Gaia: Love mother earth, love the part of you that is her. Love the blood in your veins as you love her rivers and streams. Love the flesh and bone of your body as you love her soil and rock. Love the life and breath within you as you love her air and atmosphere. Love the dreams of your mind as you love her friend Luna, the moon. Abandon not your whole self for the love of the idea, let not loose of the idea for revelry in the wisdom of your body. Be whole and complete, for there will you find the secrets of magick. The words of Alecto Aletheia Hypatia: Love, reason, respect, strength, and justice – for yourself and all others. Seek these in your own right and in virtue of your own humanity, never at the expense of another. Reason is a precious gift, if it is used to harm another, it will be lost to you. You will become one who argues only to win a point instead of one who reasons in order to seek wisdom. It is given to us to serve, use it with respect, honor, and love.

Hypatia When women in the rest of the world were thought to be of lesser value than the family cow, Greece was producing prominent women in fields of endeavor strictly monopolized by men in other lands a situation that is an almost international phenomenon even today One of these exceptional women was a scholar and scientist who excelled as a mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher. Her name was Hypatia, and she was born circa 370 A.D. in the Greek city of Alexandria, in today's Egypt. She was the daughter of the mathematician and philosopher Theon, of Alexandria, who as only a Greek father would ever think of doing at that time saw to it that his daughter received the best possible education in the Greek philosophical schools of Alexandria and Athens. It was in Athens that Hypatia studied under the neo-platonist philosopher Proclus ( c. 410-485 A.D. ), who, as the last great systematizer of the Greek philosophical tradition, exerted a powerful influence on medieval and renaissance thought. After receiving the best education the world had to offer, Hypatia left Athens and returned to Alexandria where she taught philosophy, mathematics, and astronomy. Some of her students went on to achieve fame and distinction as men of science and philosophy. Men such as Ieroklis, the philosopher

    1) "Hypatia was murdered by "a troop of savage and merciless fanatics" instigated by Cyril, and the crime was never punished, apparently because "superstition [Christianity] perhaps would more gently expiate the blood of a virgin, than the banishment of a saint." This representation of the "Alexandrian crime" perfectly fitted Gibbon's theory that the rise of Christianity was the crucial cause of the fall of the ancient civilization." page 4 2) "After studying the epigram some scholars, such as Wolfgang Meyer, have inferred that there were two Hypatias: Theon's daughter, at the turn of the fourth and fifth centuries, and Erythrius' daughter, in the second half of the fifth century. This conclusion, however, is only partly correct, for we know that there were more women named Hypatia, including a benefactress of the church in the mid-fifth century . . . . The name was by no means uncommon, and it was not confined to pagan women." page 23 3) "This brief survey indicates that Hypatia's closest, most loyal students were people who later held high imperial or ecclesiastical positions. Of even greater significance is evidence that agents of the imperial power arriving in Alexandria became close acquaintances of Hypatia and most likely attended her lectures." page 38

Hypatia
Background
Hypatia was born in 370AD, just after the Romans had invaded Greece. During this time the Greek scholars were fighting to preserve the Greek traditions of seeking and developing new ideas. Perl (1978) states that Hypatia was not only one of the last of the great teachers involved in this struggle, but also the last of the Greek Mathematicians. Furthermore, Osen (1990) believes that Hypatia was actually the first woman to have written on mathematical subjects. So, although she was mainly a critic and commentator rather than a creator, her place in history seems relatively secure. Often she is the only woman mentioned in mathematical histories. Hypatia was probably educated by her father Theon, who was a noted mathematician and astronomer in Alexandria. He not only noticed Hypatia's talent at an early age, but also encouraged her. Historians believe that Theon tried to raise her to be the perfect human being (Adair 1995). As Hypatia grew older she developed a great interest in mathematics and science. This interest led her to become the author of several mathematical works. Very little is however known for certain about Hypatia's work, as most of her works were destroyed along with the Ptolemaic libraries in Alexandria (Osen 1990 and ed. Gillispie 1970).
Contributions
Perl (1978) and Osen (1990), both agree that Hypatia was essentially an algebraist who was inspired by Diophantus. We know that Hypatia wrote a commentary on Diophantus'

Hypatia
A.D. 390 - 415
Hypatia was an ancient Greek philosopher and mathematician who lived in the city of Alexandria in Egypt during the late Fourth and early Fifth Centuries A.D. She is generally thought to have been the first woman mathematician, but this is only because there are no surviving records of any earlier women who made contributions in the field. Hypatia received much of her education from her father Theon, who was also a mathematician of considerable ability. She taught and lectured at the fine Ptolemaic Library of Alexandria as well as the University of Alexandria and is known to have done work in math, science, philosophy, and astronomy. In the classical world, the role of a philosopher was a much broader one than we usually think of today. The ancient Greeks believed that all knowledge was somehow related and a philosopher could equally well discuss science, mechanics, mathematics, human values, and theories of government. It was a combination of all of these things that set the stage for the tragedy that now took place. Cyril was bishop of Alexandria in 415 and it was his ambition to be the most powerful man in Alexandria, second only to the emperor himself. Cyril even defied Orestes, the prefect appointed by the emperor to govern Egypt. He even went so far as to incite a riot of monks in which one of them threw a stone, seriously injuring Orestes. Cyril also tried to have all Jews banished from the city so he could confiscate their property.

Brief Biography Works by Kingsley Secondary Works by Author ... Secondary Works by Date Hypatia Baldwin, Stanley E. Charles Kingsley (Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 1934).

This is a book length treatment of Kingsley's life and works. After chapters providing a brief biography, a discussion of the background of the novels, and a consideration of the influence of Carlyle and Maurice, Baldwin devotes separate chapters to each of the novels: Y east, Alton Locke, Two Years Ago, Hypatia, Westward Ho!, and Hereward the Wake . Baldwin is measured in his assessment, though he still finds much to praise in Kingsley's diverse literary endeavors. Nevertheless, he considers Kingsley the man as more prominent than his literature. "Some men's writings are the greatest part of them, and posterity studies their lives through a spirit of curiosity excited by their works. In a sense this is true of Kingsley, but in a truer sense many are reading Kingsley's literary works because of the indelible impression his personality made upon his fellow men, for whom, in all his activities, he labored. His life in itself was a poem of deep lyric passion" (194). Full Book Treatment Overview Carlyle Maurice ... Westward Ho!

Hypatia of Alexandria
Maria Dzielska
Translated by F. Lyra Hypatiabrilliant mathematician, eloquent Neoplatonist, and a woman renowned for her beautywas brutally murdered by a mob of Christians in Alexandria in 415. She has been a legend ever since. In this engrossing book, Maria Dzielska searches behind the legend to bring us the real story of Hypatia's life and death, and new insight into her colorful world. Historians and poets, Victorian novelists and contemporary feminists have seen Hypatia as a symbolof the waning of classical culture and freedom of inquiry, of the rise of fanatical Christianity, or of sexual freedom. Dzielska shows us why versions of Hypatia's legend have served her champions' purposes, and how they have distorted the true story. She takes us back to the Alexandria of Hypatia's day, with its Library and Museion, pagan cults and the pontificate of Saint Cyril, thriving Jewish community and vibrant Greek culture, and circles of philosophers, mathematicians, astronomers, and militant Christians. Drawing on the letters of Hypatia's most prominent pupil, Synesius of Cyrene, Dzielska constructs a compelling picture of the young philosopher's disciples and her teaching. Finally she plumbs her sources for the facts surrounding Hypatia's cruel death, clarifying what the murder tells us about the tensions of this tumultuous era.
