And all about, the birds kept leafy house,
And sung and darted in and out the boughs;
And all about, a lovely sky of blue
Clearly was felt, or down the leaves laugh'd through;
And here and there, in ev'ry part, were seats,
Some in the open walks, some in retreats,-
With bow'ring leaves o'erhead, to which the eye
Look'd up half sweetly and half awfully,-
Places of nestling green, for poets made,
Where, when the sunshine struck a yellow shade,
The rugged trunks, to inward peeping sight, Throng'd in dark pillars up the gold green light. Leigh Hunt, from A Story of Rimini

Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace, And saw, within the moonlight in his room, Making it rich, and like a lily in bloom, An Angel writing in a book of gold: Exceeding peace had made Ben Adhem bold, And to the Presence in the room he said, "What writest thou?" The Vision raised its head, And with a look made of all sweet accord Answered, "The names of those who love the Lord." "And is mine one?" said Abou. "Nay, not so," Replied the Angel. Abou spoke more low, But cheerily still; and said, "I pray thee, then, Write me as one who loves his fellow men." The Angel wrote, and vanished. The next night It came again with a great wakening light, And showed the names whom love of God had blessed, And, lo! Ben Adhem's name led all the rest! James Leigh Hunt There's really nothing this poem needs said about it. It is - and I mean this is a strictly positive sense - a simple poem; Hunt takes a straightforward story and renders it in enjoyable verse, uncomplicated by hidden meanings or stylistic tricks. It's also an extremely well known poem - the latter due at least in part to its being inflicted upon countless generations of schoolchildren[1]. Wodehouse devotees will doubtless recognise the poem as being well-loved by Jeeves. [1] The young Isaac Asimov once got himself into trouble for, when asked why Ben Adhem's name led all the rest, waving his hand wildly and answering 'alphabetical order', a spirited but unappreciated stand against the belabouring of the obvious. Length : Text-only version Prev Index Next Your comments on this poem to attach to the end [ microfaq The Glove and the Lions James Leigh Hunt This is the third of Hunt's widely anthologised poems, and, like Abou Ben Adhem, demonstrates a nice combination of simplicity and stylistic polish. As poems go it's a fairly standard piece of narrative verse - not, perhaps, as brilliant as Jenny Kissed Me, or as memorable as Abou Ben Adhem, but it tells a nice story[1], and tells it well. And I love the playfulness that runs through the rhyme scheme and metre - perhaps the one aspect of Hunt's poetry that most endears it to me. [1] as to whether the story has any basis in reality, or even whether it's drawing upon an existing folk tale, I have no idea. m. http://www.southgategreen.org.uk/pages/lhunt.htm
James Henry Leigh Hunt (1784 - 1859)
Jill Sibley
Leigh Hunt was the youngest son of Isaac Hunt, born on the 19th October 1984 at Eagle Hall, Southgate (previously situated near the Meadway). He was named after the Duke of Chandos' nephew. Isaac had delivered a sermon on a visit to Southgate, and impressed the Duke of Chandos who asked him to tutor his nephew. Sources vary as to the reason why he named his son Leigh Hunt. It may have been at the express wish of the Duke or because Isaac sought advancement in the ducal favour. Isaac was a loyalist who left the shores of Barbados during the American War of Independence and was according to his son 'better suited to Barbados'. Perhaps Leigh Hunt was inferring that his father's love of pleasure and laxity in financial affairs was more suited to Caribbean shores, but he himself inherited the same character traits. As he grew up Hunt developed an interest in politics and poetry. He became friends with other young writers who favoured political reform including Percy Bysshe Shelley, William Hazlitt, Henry Brougham, Lord Byron,Thomas Barnes and Charles Lamb. As well as writing poetry and articles on politics, Leigh Hunt worked as a drama critic for the News. In 1808 Leigh Hunt helped his brother, John Hunt, to start a political journal called the Examiner. The journal gave support to radicals in Parliament such as Henry Brougham and Sir Francis Burdett and the political ideas of people like Robert Owen and Jeremy Bentham.

The Deaths Of Little Children
Introductory Note
Hunt`s poetry is pretty, fanciful, and musical, but, with the exception of one or two pieces, is now little read. Much of his prose work is merely highly-toned journalism, the interest of which has passed with its occasion. But among his familiar essays, from which the paper here printed is taken, there are many little masterpieces, suffused with his cheerful optimistic spirit, and expressed always gracefully and sometimes exquisitely. "No man," says James Russell Lowell, "has ever understood the delicacies and luxuries of language better than he; and his thoughts often have all the rounded grace and shifting luster of a dove`s neck. . . . He was as pure-minded a man as ever lived, and a critic whose subtlety of discrimination and whose soundness of judgment, supported as it was on a broad basis of truly liberal scholarship, have hardly yet won fitting appreciation."
The Deaths Of Little Children
A Grecian philosopher being asked why he wept for the death of his son, since the sorrow was in vain, replied, "I weep on that account." And his answer became his wisdom. It is only for sophists to contend that we, whose eyes contain the fountains of tears, need never give way to them. It would be unwise not to do so on some occasions. Sorrow unlocks them in her balmy moods. The first bursts may be bitter and overwhelming; but the soil on which they pour would be worse without them. They refresh the fever of the soul - the dry misery which parches the countenance into furrows, and renders us liable to our most terrible "flesh-quakes."

by Leigh Hunt [1784-1859]
[written about 1836]
Abou Ben Adhem (may his tribe increase!)
Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace,
And saw, within the moonlight of his room,
Making it rich, and like a lily in bloom,
An angel writing in a book of gold:-
Exceeding peace had made Ben Adhem bold,
And to the presence in the room he said,
'What writest thou?' - The vision raised its head, And with a look made of all sweet accord, Answered 'The names of those who love the Lord.' 'And is mine one?' said Abou. 'Nay, not so,' Replied the angel. Abou spoke more low, But cheerly still; and said 'I pray thee then, Write me as one that loves his fellow-men.' The angel wrote, and vanished. The next night It came again with a great wakening light, And showed the names who love of God had blessed, And lo! Ben Adhem's name led all the rest. God Moves in a Mysterious Way by William Cowper [1731-1800] [written 1774] God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform: He plants His footsteps in the sea
