NewsFlash: Les Miz Closing on Broadway March, 2003
Victor Hugo wrote poetry, fiction, and essays. He was an artist, a playwright, and a journalist. A revolutionary in both the literary and the political. A 19th Century French literary legend. Victor in Poesy, Victor in Romance,
Cloud-weaver of phantasmal hopes and fears,
French of the French, and Lord of human tears;
Child-lover; Bard whose fame-lit laurels glance
Darkening the wreaths of all that would advance,
Beyond our strait, their claim to be thy peers;
Weird Titan by thy winter weight of years
As yet unbroken, Stormy voice of France!

Victor Hugo
Victor Hugo, one of France's literary giants, spent 15 years in exile in Guernsey between 1855 and 1870. Having fled France, Hugo spent a short spell at St Clement's, in Jersey, before taking up residence at Hauteville House, which is now the property of the City of Paris. A tour of the house offers a challenge to spot the omnipresent 'VH' symbol in Hugo's countless lavish home improvement projects. True to form, his bedroom is a surprise. For a married man with a reputedly gargantuan sexual appetite for maids and prostitutes, the narrow wooden couch, where he slept without a pillow, is a riddle - answered in part, by the secret passage to other rooms. But the crowning glory of the house, in every sense, is Hugo's rooftop studio where he penned some of his timeless landmarks of literature, including Les Miserables. Hugo wrote standing up in his panoramic retreat - at a shelf of black walnut - and his view of the islands is still the best in Guernsey.
But Hugo was a complex character: angry, idealistic and, above all else, passionate. He not only lived in Guernsey - he loved it. Inspired by the island's landscape, inhabitants and busy coastal waters, he dedicated his novel Les Traivailleurs de la Mer (The Toilers of the Sea) to:

NEUHAUS, HUGO VICTOR, JR. (1915-1987). Hugo V. Neuhaus, Jr., architect, was born in Houston, Texas, on March 5, 1915, the son of Hugo Victor and Kate Padgett (Rice) Neuhaus. He was a graduate of St. Paul's School, Concord, New Hampshire (1934), Yale College (A.B., 1938), and the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University (B.Arch., 1941). He served in the United States Army Air Force from 1941 to 1946, attaining the rank of major. Upon returning to Houston in 1946, Neuhaus worked briefly for the architect Kenneth Franzheim qv (1946-47), then entered the office of C. Herbert Cowell. He became Cowell's partner in the firm Cowell and Neuhaus in 1949. Following its dissolution in 1962, he practiced with Magruder Wingfield, Jr., until 1967. From 1967 until his retirement in 1980, Neuhaus practiced under the name of Neuhaus Associates. He studied at the Graduate School of Design at the same time as the New York architect Philip Johnson. When Johnson was commissioned to design a house in Houston for Dominique (Schlumberger) and John de Menil qv in 1949, he asked Neuhaus to serve as his local associate architect. As a result of this collaboration Neuhaus came under the influence of the Chicago architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Johnson's mentor, an influence to which almost the entire body of Neuhaus's subsequent work testified.

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Victor Hugo (1802-1885) Novelist, poet, and dramatist, the most important of French Romantic writers. In his preface to his historical play CROMWELL (1827) Hugo wrote that romanticism is the liberalism of literature. Hugo developed his own version of the historical novel, combining concrete, historical details with vivid, melodramatic, even feverish imagination. Among his best-known works are The Hunchback of Notre Dame and "How came it that this prudent, economical man was also generous? That this chaste adolescent, this model father, grew to be, in his last years, an ageing faun? That this legitimist changed, first into a Bonapartist, only, later still, to be hailed as the grandfather of the Republic? That this pacifist could sing, better than anybody, of the glories of the flags of Wagram? That this bourgeois in the eyes of other bourgeois came to assume the stature of a rebel? These are the questions that every biographer of Victor Hugo must answer." (from Olympio: The Life of Victor Hugo Virgil . At the age of sixteen he noted: "Many a great poet is often / Nothing but a literary giraffe: / How great he seems in front, / How small he is behind!" With his brothers he founded in 1819 a review, the
